    In August 2016, a 12-year-ld by in the Arctic Circle died and at least twenty peple there were hspitalized after having been infected by anthrax(炭疽).
    Experts studied and cncluded that ver 75 years ag, a reindeer infected with anthrax died and its bdy was frzen and trapped under a layer f permafrst. It stayed there, with the disease inactive, until a heatwave in the summer f 2016. The heatwave melted the permafrst and expsed the reindeer bdy, which then released the infectius pathgen(病原体) int the nearby water and sil, and then int the fd supply. Mre than 2, 000 reindeer feeding near the bdy became infected, which then led t a small number f human cases.
    While yu may think the incident is islated t that area, the fact that lng-inactive viruses and bacteria might wake up sn due t climate change will affect us all. Pathgenic viruses might be preserved in ld permafrst layers, including sme that have caused glbal epidemics in the past.
