Lead in:
Pair Wrk: Yu are ging t write an email t a junir secndary schl classmate abut yur new schl. Discuss yur ideas with a partner.
Write "My New Schl Life"n the bard. Read thrugh the questins with students and then have them wrk in pairs t discuss their answers. Encurage students t use the language they learnt in the unit. Elicit answers frm students and write n the bard.
While-writing:
(1) Read fr Writing Read the email. Answer the questins.
Ask students t predict what they will read abut.Wang Ying and Fang Lan culd be clleagues, strangers r friends. D yu think the email will be frmal r infrmal?(infrmal) Hw will yu be able t tell?(cntractins, punctuatin, friendly tne, writing as if talking) What tpics might be mentined?(features f the new schl, feelings, activities being dne) Have students read the email silently and then discuss whether their predictins were crrect.
· Read the first questin and havestudents share their ideas with a partner befre discussing the answer as a class. Cntinue with the ther questins.
· When discussing the features f Infrmal writing, elicit additinal examples f cntractins, punctuatin marks and infrmal wrds and phrases students can use in their writing.
(2) Label the elements(a-g) f the email abve.
(3) Write 2-3 sentences abut yur schl life that yu want t tell yur frmer classmate. Use the Sentence Builder t help yu.
Review the Sentence Builder with students, explain difficult wrds. Discuss the different types f sentences given as examples. Chse sentences frm the email t use as examples f each sentence type.
If there is time, challenge students t write their wn example sentences fr each sentence type.
Students write their sentences and exchange their writing with a partner t check each ther's wrk.
Ask vlunteers t read their sentences t the class and have students decide which sentence type each sentence is.
Pst-writing:
Cmpse the Writing
(1) Outlining Cmplete the utline f yur email. Use Activity 3 t help yu.
· Review the elements f writing a frmal email in the Writing Help with students.
· Read the rubric and explain that students will nw cmpse their wn Infrmal email t a friend abut their new schl life. Encurage students t use Activity 3 t help them as well as ther ideas discussed in the writing wrkshp.
· As students wrk, make sure that they are writing ntes, nt cmplete sentences. Remind students that in the early stages f writing, it is alright t crss ut ideas in favr f better ideas.
(2) Drafting Use yur utline and the Writing Help t write the first draft.
· Explain that a draft is the first versin f a piece f writing and that it is als called a rugh.
· Have students use their utlines t write cmplete sentences. Remind students t review the Sentence Builder.
· Befre students begin writing, remind them t review the infrmatin nce again in the Writing Help.
(3) Editing Edit yur email in pairs.Then share in class.
· Tell students that the final stage f writing, befre publishing, is editing. When we edit, we check that ur ideas are clear and that ur sentences are cmplete.
· Have students exchange their writing with a partner and ffer each ther suggestins t imprve their drafts. After editing, writers will make changes t their drafts and either rewrite r print a clean cpy f the wrk.
Hmewrk:
Ask students t prepare a final draft f their wrk. Have students cmplete the Peer Editing Sheet n page 90 f the Student Bk.
