When she was alone, Mary felt lonelier than ever. She went out of the house and ran around the garden ten times. Ben Weatherstaff was working in it.
“Spring is coming,” he said to Mary. “I can smell it in the air. Soon there will be spring flowers.” At this moment, the robin(知更鸟)flew toward them and landed at Mary’s feet.
“He remembers me,” she said.
“He knows everything that happens here,” Ben said. “Only he knows what’s happening in the garden that has no door into it. No one else has been inside it for ten years.”
Ben walked away to continue his work. Mary bent down and began talking to the robin. She felt happier than she had ever felt.
The robin trusted her and did not fly away. It began pecking at the ground, looking for a worm to eat.
Mary looked closely at the ground. She saw something that looked like metal. She picked it up. It was dirty and rusty. She cleaned it and saw that it was a key.
“It’s been in the ground for many years,” she thought. “I wonder if it is the key to the garden. If it is, then I must find the door.”
Mary skipped around the garden. The robin followed her. Mary stopped skipping and spoke to the robin.
“He showed me where to find the key,” she thought. “Can you show me where the door is?”
The robin sat on the top of the garden wall. It began to sing. The wall was covered with ivy. Mary pulled at a piece of the ivy. It came away from the wall. Behind the wall was a door. If your pencil box is broken, the batteries in your flashlights run out, or you have some leftover food, how will you deal with these things? You will probably throw them all into one rubbish bin. But actually, you need to sort all the rubbish separately. If you don’t sort your rubbish, all of it will go to a special place where it is buried together. As a result, it will occupy some fields. Some rubbish will pollute the groundwater. Some rubbish that can be reused will be wasted.
In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on rubbish sorting.
Shanghai has called on all the people living in this city to sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Wet waste is known as household waste. They are things you don’t want but pigs can eat. Paper, metal, glass, plastic and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries. Finally, any waste that is not wet, recyclable or harmful will go to the “dry waste” bin.
Many other Chinese cities are also using this way to sort their rubbish. For example, Guangzhou has been sorting its rubbish into the same four groups since several years ago. Students in Guangzhou have already received waste-sorting guidebooks. They have studied these books and known how to sort the rubbish.
China is now improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late to learn how to sort your rubbish rightly. We should take an active part in it.
45. How many bad results will there be if all the rubbish is buried together?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
46. What does the underlined phrase “occupy” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. bring up B. put up C. take up D. keep up
47. Which of the following things belong to harmful waste?
A. Metal and medicine. B. Paper and glass.
C. Leftover food and batteries. D. Batteries and medicine.
48. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Students in Guangzhou have known how to sort the rubbish.
B. Paper and metal can be thrown into a “dry waste” bin.
C. The whole world is working hard on rubbish sorting.
D. China has already succeeded in sorting the rubbish.

For her 85th birthday, I gave my mother Susan an iPad. She’d never used a computer. She had trouble in using her TV remote control and had a painful experience with her mobile phone. However, this time she wanted to learn about the iPad. She believed that if she didn’t keep up with technology, she would find herself in a computerized kitchen, “unable to open a can of soup”.
Our first task was email. She quickly learned the basic rules but couldn’t understand why she has to email others when she could phone or visit in person.
Next, we dealt with Netflix, the widely-used video website. Mom is a movie lover and she was surprised by the number of crime movies that Netflix can offer. One Saturday, she called me because she was having trouble logging onto Netflix. I suggested it might require an update. “They probably have fewer people working as it’s a long weekend,” she told me.
Later, she taught herself to learn FaceTime and started her experiments with podcasts, and even started emailing her grandchildren.
As she became more familiar, she began wondering about all the icons, so we set up a weekly lecture, which takes place on the phone, each of us with our iPads. One day, I tried for 45 minutes to help her find the search bar. “It looks like a magnifying glass(放大镜),” I kept saying, she asked, “You mean the frying pan?”
Unexpectedly, she made great progress. Now she becomes interested in E-books and even checks them out in the middle of the night. She watches TV series and knows what’s popular. It’s great to see how much her confidence has grown. Yesterday, she FaceTimed me. “I’ve made a decision,” she said. “I’m going to learn how to operate every piece of technology in the apartment - including the TV remote.” However, I still can’t wait for the day when we can sit down in person and surf the Internet together.
49. Why did Susan decide to learn to use an iPad?
A. To keep up with the times. B. To connect with her family.
C. To better control her kitchen. D. To keep in touch with her friends.
50. Which of the following shows the correct order of Susan’s experience?
a. She began emailing her grandchildren.
b. She asked the author about the search bar.
c. She received an iPad as a birthday present.
d. She met difficulties in logging onto the video website.
e. She decided to learn about the technologies in the apartment.
A. c - d - a - b - c B. c - e - d - a - b C. e - c - d - a - b D. e - a - d - b - c
51. What is the author’s writing purpose?
A. To suggest how to help the elder use email.
B. To criticize modern technology as unfriendly to the elder.
C. To show the importance of learning new technologies.
D. To share her mother’s interesting learning experiences.
D
①Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people’s mood. But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
②Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around you may be smiling, too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not set oof that chain of good feelings to people around?
③Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
④In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone’s spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
⑤The story doesn’t end here. Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you’re in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it?
52. The writer leads in the topic by ______.
A. telling a story B. making a survey C. giving examples D. asking questions
53. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Being in a good mood can help you act more kindly.
B. Being kind can improve people’s emotion.
C. Spending money on others may make you happy.
D. A kind act can make all the people feel better.
54. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
55. In which section of a newspaper can you most probably find the passage?
A. Culture. B. Science. C. Wealth. D. Invention.
