I spent my childhood collecting and pressing four-leaf clovers (三叶草) into books at my mother's house. I started with big cloth-and-leather-bound books. When I ran out of bound volumes, I began to slip my treasures into anything I could find, such as old fiction paperbacks and cookbooks. The same is true in my house today. Shake a book, and a treasure just might fall into your hand.
A few years ago, in Nova Scotia, my husband and I pulled off the road for a picnic. The ground was thick with clovers. Some shoots had four, five, or even six leaves. I lined them up on the picnic table to admire. To me, it was simple. The differences in their shapes made them stand out, breaking the pretty pattern of the common clovers with three perfect leaves.
Two summers back, while waiting for an airport shuttle in Munich, I found a tiny four-leaf clover in a traffic circle and put it in my passport. On the way home, my husband and I were upgraded to business class. All of my friends owed it to the clover. I think it's some likely that we were upgraded because a flight was postponed (延误), which left us trapped in two cities for several hours.
People disagree about whether the luck comes for finding or possessing a clover. Some believe that the luck is lost if the four-leaf clover is shown to somebody else, while others think that the luck doubles if it is given away. I believe that positivity is compounded (增强) by sharing. I feel lucky to find the clovers so often, but I don't think they influence my life any more than it does to share anything a little special with a friend or a stranger.
24. What was the author's hobby as a child?
A. Keeping four-leaf clovers.
B. Collecting different kinds of books.
C. Reading a lot of leather-bound books.
D. Decorating her mother's house with various treasures.
25. What did the author do when she had a picnic?
A. She picked some extraordinary clovers.
B. She cleared a road fully covered with clovers.
C. She decided to stay in Nova Scotia to enjoy clovers.
D. She damaged some pretty kinds of conventional clovers.
26. What resulted in the author's being upgraded to business class?
A. The friends' help. B. The flight delay.
C. Her husband's company. D. Her passport with the tiny four-leaf clover.
27. What is the author's purpose of writing the text?
A. To advise readers to look for clovers.
B. To encourage readers to share with others.
C. To show readers the influence of good luck.
D. To tell readers the ways of keeping clovers.
C
“The pile of ice is so thick; it extends more than 10, 000 feet above the ocean. And if all that ice were to melt and go into the ocean, global sea levels would rise by about 24 feet everywhere around the world,” said Jason Briner, a geologist who studies the ice sheet in Greenland at the University of Buffalo. The ice sheet of the biggest island in the world is melting, and the ice sheet that sits atop it is massive. The ice sheet is melting, of course. But just how much, compared to the past?
Briner’s team did a computer simulation (模拟) of the southwest part of the Greenland ice sheet — which he says is a good indicator (标示器) for ice melting across the entire ice sheet. The researchers fed past climate data into that model to “hindcast, (后报)” rather than forecast, the past activity of the ice sheet. They then checked the model’s predictions of the past shape and size of the ice sheet by looking at piles of rocks and dirt on Greenland today, which outline the edges of ancient ice. And the simulation was in good agreement with the actual situation.
Using that reconstruction of the ice sheet over time, the team could compare the ice sheet’s historic losses to those happening today under human-caused global warming. And they determined that Greenland is on track to lose more ice this century than during any century in the past 12,000 years — possibly four times as much.
Finally, it’s up to us how much ice actually melts. If the world goes net carbon zero(零碳排放) by 2100, for example, Briner says ice loss could stop entirely at the end of the century, according to one model. “That was what kept me from being completely depressed about our study.” Dozens of countries have already announced goals to go net zero by the middle of this century — so far the
U. S. is not one of them.
28.What do we know about the Greenland ice sheet?
A.It is as thick as over 10,000 feet.
B.It is becoming smaller and smaller.
C.It has raised sea levels by 24 feet.
D.It is the largest ice sheet in the world.
29.How did Briner’s team conduct their research?
A.By modeling part of the ice sheet on computer.
B.By doing a simulation of the whole ice sheet.
C.By studying the ancient rocks and dirt.
D.By forecasting the future climate change.
30.What can we infer about the Greenland ice sheet in the last paragraph?
A.The speed of its melting will be increasingly fast.
B.The extent of its loss depends on human activities.
C.Its ice loss will stop entirely at the end of the century.
D.It will reach the goal of net carbon zero by the end of the century.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Rising Global Sea Levels
B.Climate Change is Speeding Up
C.Greenland — the Biggest Island is Melting
D.Net Carbon Zero — a Global Goal by 2100
D
Harvard scientists have created a “bionic (仿生的) leaf” that turns solar energy into liquid fuel. The work is the fruit of cooperation between Professor Pamela Silver at Harvard Medical School and Professor Daniel Nocera in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
The pair, who began cooperating two years ago, share an interest in developing energy sources that might someday have practical application in remote areas in the developing world. Silver named the system “bionic” because it joins a biological system to a clever piece of inorganic (无机的) chemistry previously developed by Nocera; that invention, widely known as the artificial leaf, turns solar energy into hydrogen (氢气) fuel.
Nocera's artificial leaf, which serves as fuel source in the bionic leaf, works by sandwiching a photovoltaic cells (光电池) between two metal oxide catalysts (氧化催化物). When put in water at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, the artificial leaf copies photosynthesis (光合作用). Nocera has been perfecting the artificial leaf since he first demonstrated (演示) it in 201l;today, it is far more efficient than a field-grown plant, which assimilates only 1 percent of sunlight's energy.
The hydrogen is a fuel with a broad use, Nocera reports, and could easily become the basis of a fuel cell, but it has not been widely adopted, partly because it is a gas. By contrast, liquid fuels are much easier to handle and store.
“Modern society”, says Nocera, “has created an entire manufacturing economy based not only on burning fossil fuels, but on using oil to make things such as rubber and plastics.” “ A lot of chemistry was done which set that up,” he notes. The present system makes sense now because oil costs so little; a sustainable system like the artificial or bionic leaf can't compete with that. But when oil becomes less and less, he say, “We might want to redo everything in terms of manufacturing. In the future, you might want to make everything renewable. Then, you can trust bionic leaf.”
32. What can be implied from the second paragraph?
A. The pair invented the artificial leaf.
B. Bionic leaf got its name from its invention developed by Nocera.
C. The pair are concerned about energy sources in developing countries.
D. Both bionic leaf and artificial leaf can change solar energy into liquid fuel.
33. The underlined “assimilate” in paragraph 3 most nearly means ________.
A. records B. absorbs C. attracts D. equals
34. Why does Nocera have faith in bionic leaf?
A. Fossil fuels now are exhausted and cannot be employed.
B. Bionic leaf guarantees a sustainable energy supply compared with oil.
C. Liquid fuels created by bionic leaf are much easier to handle and store.
D. Bionic leaf is far more efficient than a field-grown plant and fossil fuels.
35. What does the author mainly talk about concerning the bionic leaf?
A. Its scientific efficiency.
B. Its current commercial uses.
C. Its development and significance.
D. Its difference from the artificial leaf.

Science can help you improve your study methods. For more than 100 years, psychologists have done research on which study habits work best. 36 . Here are 4 tips to improve your study habits.
Space out (间隔) your studying
Nate Kornell, a psychologist at Williams College, thinks it's a good idea to study the day before a big test. 37 . Instead, space out those study sessions. Kornell compares our memory to water in a bucket that has a small leak. Try to refill the bucket while it's still full, and you can't add much more water. Allow time between study sessions, and some of the material may drip out of your memory. But then you'll be able to relearn it and learn more in your next study session.
Practice,practice,practice!
Musicians practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. 38 . "If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice," says Katherine Rawson. She's a psychologist at Kent State University in Ohio. In one 2013 study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored better, on average, than students who studied the way they normally had.
Test yourself
Nebel's preferred study habit is one of the best way. Before big tests, Nebel's mom quizzed her on the material. “Now I know that was retrieval (检索) practice, ”she says. As Nebel got older, she quizzed herself. “ 39 ,” Nebel suggests. “Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side and try to quiz yourself the way the teacher asks questions, ”she adds.
Dig deeper
It's hard to remember a string of facts and figures if you don't push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about? Why do they matter? Psychologists call this elaboration (推敲). It's taking class material and asking a lot of how and why questions about it. This helps you combine new information with other things you know. And it creates a bigger network in your brain of things that relate to one another, she says. 40 .
A. The same should go for learning
B. Some tips are helpful for almost every subject
C. Of course, nothing can replace your mother.
D. Some experts hold that studying late at night can be really useful
E. That larger network makes it easier to learn and remember things
F. Create a pack of flash cards every time you learn new information
G. But research shows it's a bad idea to force all your studying into that day
