第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) An experimental cleanup device called RemoveDEBRIS has successfully cast a net around a dummy (仿真的) satellite, imitating a technique that could one day collect spaceborne garbage.
The test, which was carried out this week, is widely believed to be the first successful demonstration of space cleanup technology, experts told CNN. And it symbolizes an early step toward solving what has already been a critical issue: junk in space.
Millions of pieces of junk are turning around in orbit, the result of 50 years of space travel and few regulations to keep space clean. At orbital speeds, even a small bit of paint crashing with a satellite can cause critical damage.
Various companies have plans to send thousands of new satellites into low-Earth orbit, already the most crowded area.
The RemoveDEBRIS experiment is run by a company and researchers led by the U. K.’s Surrey Space Center and includes Airbus, Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. and France’s ArianeGroup.
Guglielmo Aglietti, the director of Surrey Space Center, said that an operational version of the RemoveDEBRlS technology would cast a net that remains fastened to the main satellite so the debris can be dragged out of orbit. It could target large pieces of junk, including dead satellites up to 10 meters long.
The RemoveDEBRIS satellite will conduct a few more experiments in the coming months, including testing navigation features that could help guide the satellite to a specific piece of debris.
Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said the success of this week’s experiment was exciting, but he cautioned against “over- publicizing” it.
There are still enormous barriers to clear before operational cleanup tasks are underway, he said, and the most discouraging is figuring out how to fund such projects.
Aglietti, the Surrey professor who helped lead the RemoveDEBRIS project, said “The challenge will lie in persuading the relevant authorities to sponsor these tasks.” Aglietti said he hopes RemoveDEBRIS will conduct a few cleanup tasks per year, targeting the largest pieces of junk in the most crowded orbits.
1、What is the use of the RemoveDEBRIS satellite?
A.Demonstrating space technology.
B.Imitating a developing technique.
C.Collecting wastes existing in space.
D.Symbolizing great progress in space.
2、How does the RemoveDEBRlS satellite work?
A.By throwing a net to take the junk from orbit.
B.By fastening it to the main satellite tightly.
C.By dragging satellites up to 10 meters long.
D.By targeting large pieces of junk carefully.
3、What does the underlined word “sponsor” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Accomplish. B.Support. C.Oppose. D.Provide.
4、What’s the best title for the text?
A.The RemoveDEBRIS Project Is Perfect
B.How RemoveDEBRIS Is Invented in the Lab
C.Why the RemoveDEBRIS Satellite Is Invented
D.Satellite Collects Space Junk for the First Time
22.(8分) There’s a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble In The World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too—that’s why it made Nov 16 “International Day for Tolerance”.
But first of all, what is tolerance? French philosopher Voltaire (1694—1778) can give us some help. According to him, tolerance “is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each other’s folly—that is the first law of nature.”
Nobody’s perfect. When we’re tempted to criticize another person, we should perhaps remember our own imperfections first.
Very often, people don’t realize that they’re intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN’s campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don’t put themselves in the shoes of women.
It’s worth thinking a little about the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”. Are they the best words to describe the evils of which we’re speaking here? To agree to be “tolerant” of someone isn’t necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there’s something wrong with them.
But it seems wrong that people should agree to “tolerate” people with black skin, for example. And should women think they have received the respect they are due when men agree to “tolerate” them?
Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that we all share. That’s the reason we should be tolerant.
It’s a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness. Bob Marley understood this. In the song mentioned above, he advised: “Write your love on a rock so it stays for eternity; write your hate in the sand so the waves will wash it away.”
1、According to Voltaire, tolerance is ________.
A.being willing to express your love to others
B.trying to overcome your imperfections
C.giving a hand to vulnerable groups (弱势群体)
D.accepting each other’s weaknesses
2、Why are people usually unaware of their intolerance, according to the article?
A.They are used to finding faults.
B.They consider tolerance a kind of frailty.
C.They don’t see things from the angle of others.
D.They are intolerant of themselves too.
3、In what sense is “tolerance” similar to “generosity”?
A.Humans are advised to treat others better.
B.Humans learned to find faults in others.
C.Humans need to give something to others.
D.Humans will change their attitudes to others.
4、The underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A.giving things to others B.forgiving others
C.different attitudes toward love and hate D.the fact that humans are imperfect
5、What’s the text mainly about?
A.The origin of the International Day of Tolerance.
B.The meaning and importance of tolerance.
C.The philosophy behind Bob Marley’s song.
D.Effective ways to show tolerance.
23.(8分) In his 402nd anniversary year, Shakespeare is still rightly celebrated as a great wordsmith (语言大师)and playwright (剧作家).But he was not the only great master of dramatic writing to die in 1616, and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting influence on theater.
While less known worldwide, Tang Xianzu is considered China’s greatest playwright and is highly spoken of in that country of ancient literary and dramatic traditions.
Tang was born in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi province, and pursued a low-key career as an official until, in 1598 and aged 49, he retired to focus on writing. Unlike Shakespeare’s large body of plays, poems and sonnets (十四行诗),Tang wrote only four major plays: The Purple Hairpin (《紫钗记》),Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》),A Dream under the Southern Bough (《南柯记》,and Dream of Handan(《邯郸记》. The Peony Pavilion is considered Tang’s masterpiece. The latter three are constructed around a dream narrative, a device through which Tang unlocked the emotional dimension of human desires and ambitions and explored human nature beyond the social and political restrictions of that time.
Tang lived toward the end of the Ming Dynasty(1368—1644)and the popularity of his works had a good reason. Similar to Shakespeare, his success rode the wave of a renaissance (复兴)in theater as an artistic practice. As in Shakespeare’s England, Tang’s works became hugely popular in China too. During Tang’s China, the way, in which playlets were enjoyed and performed, changed. Kunqu opera, a form of musical drama, spread from southern China to the whole nation and became a symbol of Chinese culture. Combining northern tune and southern music, kunqu opera was known for its poetic language, music, dance movements and gestures. Tang’s works benefited greatly from the popularity of kunqu opera, and his playlets are considered classics of kunqu opera.
While Tang and Shakespeare lived in a world away from each other, there are many things they share in common, such as the humanity of their drama, their iconic and heroic figures, their love for poetic language, a lasting popularity and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them.

25.(10分) Parents tend to favour children of one sex in certain situations — or so evolutionary biologists tell us. A new study used colored backpack sales data to show that parental wealth may influence spending on sons different from daughters.
In 1973 biologist Robert Trivers and computer scientist Dan Willard published a paper suggesting that parents invest(投入)more resources, such as food and effort, in male children when times are good, and in female children when times are bad. According to the Trivers-Willard hypothesis(假说), a son given lots of resources can become a gentleman — but parents with few resources tend to invest them in daughters, who generally find it easier to be a fair maiden.
Studying parental investment after birth is difficult, however. The new study looked for a standard of measurement of such investment that met several criteria: it shouldn’t be affected by sex differences in the need for resources; it should measure investment rather than outcomes; and it should be objective.
Study author Shige Song, a sociologist at Queens College, City University of New York, examined spending on pink and blue backpacks purchased in China in 2015 from a large retailer, JD.com. He narrowed the data to about 5, 000 bags: blue backpacks bought by families known to have at least one boy and pink ones bought by families known to have at least one girl. The results showed that wealthier families spent more on blue than pink backpacks — suggesting greater investment in sons. Poorer families spent more on pink packs than blue ones. The findings were published in Evolution and Human Behavior.
Song’s evidence for the Trivers-Willard hypothesis is “indirect” but “pretty convincing,” says Rosemary Hopcroft, a sociologist at the. University of North Carolina at Charlotte, who was not connected with the new study. Hopcroft reported in 2016 that U. S. fathers with high-status occupations were more likely to send their sons to private school than their daughters, while fathers with lower-status jobs more often enrolled their female children. Although the new study does not prove the families were buying the blue backpacks for boys and pink ones for girls, Hopcroft notes that “it’s a clever and interesting paper, and it’s a rather unusual use of big data.”
1、What does the writer intend to do in Paragraph 2?
A.Introduce an earlier study.
B.Identify children’s needs.
C.Assess the influence of a study.
D.Explore into parental investment.
2、What offers a challenge for the new study?
A.The investment meeting several criteria.
B.The measurement of eventual outcomes.
C.Different demands for resources between sexes.
D.Consistent standards in measuring parental investment.
3、What can be learned from Song’s research?
A.The new study was done in 2015.
B.Big data was sampled for research.
C.Preference was offered to consumers.
D.Blue packs were favored over pink ones.
4、Which of the following is likely to match Hopcroft’s remark on Song’s research?
A.It’s entertaining. B.It’s well-designed.
C.It’s unbelievable. D.It’s unusual.

The most important lesson I learned in high school had nothing to do with maths or American history. It came at graduation, several minutes before I left Miramonte High School.
I was rather shy back then, content to 1 around with my few friends and to concentrate on my 2 I was doing so well that by the end of senior year I had perfect scores and enough 3 to go to college.
But my good record soon became a 4 to my well-being. In early June of senior year, the headmaster called me into his office. He asked me to give a leave-taking speech at graduation. I looked at him, my heart 5 fast. This was the 6 for my hard work? I said something, but not very clearly, and hurried away from the office.
I was 7 about the decision, finally agreeing to compromise. I wasn’t the only speaker — I would 8 the honor with five other students. Still, it was doubtful whether the task was 9 me. How in the world would I give a speech to hundreds of people?

The first half hour of the ceremony passed, and then my 12 came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the platform without falling down. But within minutes, I finished my speech, 13 back to my seat and feeling unsatisfied with my performance.
Now I still have the 14 of that speech. My voice trembled a little, but 56 it was clear and strong. I’m proud of that tape. I achieved something I’d never 15 — I spoke in front of hundreds of people 16 I didn’t realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the 17 to participate in class at college, to give oral reports, and to eventually break free of my 18
