第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)In fairy tales, it's usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle. Parisa Tabriz is a 31-year-old with perhaps the most unique job title in engineering- “Google Security Princess”. Her job is to hack into the most popular web browser(浏览器)on the planet, trying to find weaknesses in the system before the “black hats” do. To defeat Google's attackers, Tabriz must firstly think like them.
Tabriz's role has evolved dramatically in the eight years since she first started working at Google. Back then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers---today there are over 500.
Cybercrime(网络犯罪)has come a long way in the past decade - from the Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft. Tabriz's biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google's software, and sell the information to governments or criminals. To fight against this, the company has set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program, paying anywhere from $100 to $ 20, 000 for reported mistakes.
It's a world away from Tabriz's computer-free childhood home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabriz had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college. Gaze across a line-up of Google security staff today and you'll find women like Tabriz are few and far between(稀少的)--- though in the last few years she has hired more female tech geniuses. She admits there's an obvious gender disequilibrium in Silicon Valley.
Funnily enough, during training sessions Tabriz first asks new colleagues to hack into not a computer, but a vending machine. Tabriz's job is as much about technological know-how(专门知识)as understanding the psychology of attackers.
1、What can we learn about Tabriz from the passage?
A.She was the first female engineer at Google.
B.She must think differently so as to defeat the attackers.
C.Her job relates to not only technology but also psychology.
D.Her frequent contact with computers in childhood benefits her a lot.
2、Why has Google set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program?
A.To protect Google against cybercrime.
B.To monitor the normal operation of Google.
C.To help the government locate the cybercriminals.
D.To raise people's awareness of personal information safety.
3、What does the underlined word “disequilibrium” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Imbalance. B.Preference.
C.Difference. D.Discrimination.
4、Which of the following could be the best title of this passage?
A.What leads to cybercrime
B.The “Security Princess” who guards Google
C.Measures taken by Google to protect its users
D.How to become an excellent security engineer

Kitty Hawk president, Sebastian Thrun, announced Kitty Hawk’s flying car plans last Monday. According to its website, the car is electric-powered and will be able to travel at speeds up to 40 kilometers an hour. 24.(8分)Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and inconvenient to operate and carry,” said Xiaoyi Zhang,a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To overcome the drawbacks, we created GazeSpeak, which is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing his smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each corresponds to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence system is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.
1、What’s the major function of Paragraph 1?
A.To arouse the reader’s concern.
B.To summarize the whole passage.
C.To state how GazeSpeak app works.
D.To introduce the topic of the passage.

D.be used by the people who talk with ALS sufferers
3、The GazeSpeak app is an eye-tracking input system which is .
A.expensive B.inconvenient
C.not robust D.Portable
4、The artificial intelligence system is able to predict the words by .
A.selecting the right letters through eye movements
B.pointing smartphone at the speaker

25.(10分)It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rainforest. Without it we would not have grown into primates (灵长类动物) . Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat. Without competition, Columbus wouldn’t have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb.
Friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn’t competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prize. Perhaps the ecological definition --- the simultaneous (同时) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrinents, living space, or light --- better explains it.
As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin’s theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place. In high school, friendships learn to coexist with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact, in some circumstance, competition is too much of a burden for a friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart. College admission is the final high school objective. Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades, and a student’s fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to achieve a similar recognition.
Nevertheless, by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life. It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork. A healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy (妒忌) can tear friendships apart. Yet, despite all this, without competition, we would be lost.
1、What does the ecological definition mainly explain?
A.How to win the competition. B.What competition exactly is.
C.What the result of competition is. D.How friends compete with each other.
2、According to the writer, what causes the high school students to compete?
A.They know the laws of nature well. B.Friendship is a burden for them.
C.The number of them is too large. D.They are divided into different groups.
3、Which best describes the relationship of friendship and competition?
A.Friendship is always based on competition.
B.Competition is a result of lost friendship.
C.Competition is terribly harmful to friendships.
D.The degree of competition is vital to friendship.
4、What does the author think of “competition”?
A.Competition is certain to happen at school.
B.The result of competition are out of control.
C.Competition becomes fierce in high school.
D.Friendship is not as important as competition at school.

29、I am so glad to know that you will be coming to China soon. Regarding your Chinese themed photography exhibition, you really don’t have to worry about collecting materials. I will plan out the trip for you.
I advise you illustrate the theme from three aspects — ancient architecture, exotic food and traditional culture in Shanxi. First, you can visit famous tourist attractions such as Jinci Temple to capture the beauty of ancient buildings using your camera. Moreover, I highly recommend the Food Street in Taiyuan where you will not only satisfy your stomach but fulfill your shots’ needs. Last, the Courtyard of Family Qiao is a must attraction because it will tell you more about the Jin business culture.
Let me know what you think as well. Also, don’t forget to send me details of your flight so that I can pick you up at the airport on time. See you soon!
