I'm studying English in a language school in the USA. It is the second week and everything is new to me. Because of the different language and the new environment, I find it difficult to adapt to (适应) school life here.
In yesterday's class, Mr. Peters talked about baseball. He said, “Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the USA. If you hope to speak English well, you must understand baseball. First you need to know the rules. Then you need to try to find how it has to do with the daily life.”
He gave us some expressions and let us guess the meanings. Unluckily, I had never watched a baseball game before, so I sat quietly and just listened to the others.
After school, I took out a dictionary and asked Jake, one of my friends in the neighboring class, for help. Jake was kind and patient and he had been in the USA for several years. He tried to teach me the baseball rules. I learned that baseball is a game between two teams of nine players. In baseball, a player on one team throws a small round ball at a player on the other team, who tries to hit it with a bat.
He told me more rules of the game, but the more he said, the more confused (迷惑的) I felt! Maybe one day I need to watch a real game to understand better!

Albert Einstein and Wolfgang Mozart are possibly the two most famous examples of people who are geniuses (天才). But unlike Mozart, Einstein wasn’t very talented as a kid. Born in Germany in 1879, he was slow to learn to speak, and he was a normal student at school. He was interested in math and science, but he liked to study at home better. Later, he studied to be a teacher, but he didn’t find a job in a school and for some years he was an office worker. A lot of Einstein’s most famous ideas were the result of study in his free time, when he also played the violin to relax.
From 1908, he was a university(综合性大学) teacher for many years, first in Europe and then in the US. He was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. He was famous for his theory of relativity (相对论), but only several scientists could understand it. His biggest dream was to find one explanation for the basic (基础的) ideas in physics, but he died before this was possible.
As a famous scientist, Einstein got letters from people around the world. Some of the letters were from children and he always answered them. One letter was from a girl with math problems at school. “Do not worry about your difficulties in math” was his answer. “I can tell you that mine are still greater.”
Einstein died in a hospital in 1955. He was named “Person of the Century” in 1999 by Time Magazine.

阅读短文内容,完成下面表格(每空一词)
How important is music? When they are asked this question, students and parents usually answer that music is nice, but not very important. It is often considered only as entertainment(娱乐),but not the first choice for education. This opinion is shortsighted(目光短浅的).In fact, music education is necessary and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are.Music reflects(反映) the creators' thinking and values(价值观),as well as the social environment it came from. For example, just as Mozart music represents a lifestyle, rock music represents a lifestyle, too. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously(明显地) American because it came from American musical traditions.
Music provides a kind of ability to know the world in a different way.Science explains how the sun rises and sets.Music explores(探索) the emotive(情感) meanings. We need every possible way to discover and response (回应)to our world because no one way can get it all.
Music is a form of thought,as powerful(强大的) as science. It is a way we human beings(人类)"talk"to each other.Through the language we express our feelings, our discoveries, our ideas, our imagination and our hopes so that they can be shared with others. When we do not let our children receive good music education,we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.Science does not tell us what it means to be human.Music does.
So music education is much more necessary than people generally realize(普遍认为 ).
