In February, Dr. Robert Lefkowitz published a memoir(回忆录) called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Stockholm: The Adrenaline- Fueled Adventures of an Accidental Scientist. As a physician and biochemist, Lefkowitz is a professor of biochemistry and chemistry at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
In a recent conversation via video, Lefkowitz said that he wanted his memoir to be “funny, interesting, and easy to understand”. In the book, Lefkowitz humorously describes his journey from a cardiologist(or a heart doctor) to a biochemist.
Lefkowitz's dream of becoming a doctor began when he was eight years old and growing up in the Bronx of New York City. After his father died of a heart attack, Lefkowitz made up his mind to be a cardiologist. He earned his medical degree at Columbia University.
Lefkowitz is no stranger to conducting experiments and making discoveries. He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Brian Kobilka. The two scientists were honored for their discoveries that could help unlock the secrets of many diseases.
When asked what played the most important role in his success, Lefkowitz mentioned about himself and he described himself as “reasonably intelligent and creative, hardworking, and not easily disturbed”. He added that being funny could also be very good for you and the people around you.
Before winning the Nobel Prize, Lefkowitz did countless experiments, and only 1 out of 50 turned out OK. “With difficult decisions I've had to make, I tend to make them with my heart rather than my head,” Lefkowitz said. “However, I don't mean that deciding with your heart is always right.”
At age 78, the scientist has no plans for slowing down. “My body and mind are still working,” he said. “I want to continue running my lab at Duke University and writing and publishing research papers.”
    24. What directly motivated Lefkowitz to be a doctor?
    A. His conversation with a cardiologist. B. His father's death from a heart attack.
    C. His enthusiasm for a doctor 's memoir. D. His poor physical health in childhood.
    25. What is the key to Lefkowitz's success in his own opinion?
    A. His good teamwork. B. His family s support.
    C. His positive qualities. D. His interest in research.
    26. What can we learn about Lefkowitz concerning his experiments?
    A. He suffered from a lot of failure. B. He always succeeded as planned.
    C. He considered them less challenging. D. He couldn't do them on his own.
    27. Which of the following can best describe Lefkowitz according to the last paragraph?
    A. Practice makes perfect. B. Bad luck brings good luck.
    C. You are never too old to work. D. Experience is the best teacher.

A team from the University of Tokyo just published a new study that says that writing on paper is actually the best for your mind. “Paper is more advanced and useful compared to electronic records because paper contains more one of-a-kind information for stronger memory recall,” said Professor Kuniyoshi L. Sakai, a neuroscientist at the University of Tokyo and author in the study.
Most people like smartphones or tablets because they seem to make everyday tasks easier, but after gathering 48 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 29 for the study, the researchers found that those who wrote on paper to finish note-taking tasks completed these 25 percent faster than people who used smartphones or tablets. What is the reason? The team said that using paper gave the volunteers more of a chance to write in their own form, while digital devices(数字设备) are more consistent(始终如一的).
The researchers divided the volunteers, including college students and office staff, into three groups depending on their memory, preferences for using paper or digital tools, sex and age. Then each volunteer read a conversation that highlighted characters explaining their plans, which mentioned what they wanted to do in two months, their 14 different class times, the deadlines for the characters' homework, and any other things. After using their paper or a device to take notes about this conversation, the volunteers were given an hour break and a task to keep them from thinking directly about the study. They were then asked a number of questions like “What are the, deadlines for the characters' homework?”
Those who used paper for notetaking took only 11 minutes to jot down their thoughts during the study, while people who used tablets took 14 minutes; smartphone users spent the most time on the task, taking 16 minutes to write down their thoughts. As for the accuracy of the answers, those writing on paper seemed to stand out. This suggested that writing on paper benefited their memory,
    28. Why did the volunteers writing on paper finish note taking tasks faster?
    A. Their tasks were less difficult. B. They took notes without any stops.
    C. Their writing styles were consistent. D. They could write in their unique ways.
    29. What were the volunteers required to do in the study?
    A. Make up some conversations. B. Raise questions for each other.
    C. Take notes about a conversation. D. Discuss notes with group members.
    30. Why were the volunteers asked to answer questions after a break?
    A. To test their memory. B. To ensure the accuracy:
    C. To keep them energetic. D. To remove their thoughts.
    31. What does the underlined phrase “jot down” in the last paragraph probably mean?
    A. Leave out. B. Write down. C. Break down. D. Concentrate on.
    D
Humans are not the only ones adapting to(适应) the effects of global climate change. Animals are also adapting to the environmental changes- some warm- blooded animals are beginning to “shapeshift(变身)” in response to shifts in climate, according to a recent study carried out by a team of researchers. The leader of the team is Sara Ryding, a researcher at Deakin University in Australia.
In the study, researchers have found new evidence that supports the theory that some warm -blooded animals are experiencing changes to their bodies due to the rising temperatures, resulting in larger legs, ears and beaks(喙) in some cases. The researchers have noted that warm- blooded animals living in colder climates have smaller legs, ears and beaks than animals of the same species living in warmer climates.
“When climate change is discussed in mainstream media, people are asking ‘Can humans overcome this?’ or ‘What technology can solve this?’” Ryding says.
She says that just like humans, animals also have to adapt to climate change, as shapeshifting for some of the warm-blooded animals is occurring over a far shorter time period.
“The climate change that we have created is putting much pressure on them, and while some species will adapt, others will not,” Ryding says.
Researchers have found body change in birds in Australia and North America. Certain species of Australian parrots have shown about 4% ~ 10% increase in the size of their beaks since 1871, the reason for which is rising temperatures. In North America, the dark-eyed junco(灯芯草雀) also has seen an increase in beak size.
“Larger beaks help birds dissipate(驱散) extra body heat more effectively, which is useful as global temperatures rise. However, shapeshifting does not mean that animals are able to deal with climate change easily and that all is‘fine’,” Ryding says. “It just means that they are struggling to adjust themselves to surviving it.”
    32. What happens to some warm-blooded animals in warmer climates?
    A. Some parts of their bodies are missing.
    B. Their bodies become colder and colder.
    C. Their bodies change into smaller ones.
    D. Some of their body parts become larger.
    33. Why are two types of animals mentioned in paragraph 6?
    A. To warn about the decrease of animal species.
    B. To speak highly of animals' ability to survive.
    C. To explain why animals change the body shape.
    D. To show the evidence of animals' shapeshifting.
    34. What do Sara Ryding's words in the last paragraph suggest?
    A. Climate change does little harm to bird species.
    B. Climate change is still a big challenge for birds.
    C. Birds can easily deal with global climate change.
    D. Birds fail to adjust themselves to climate change.
    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. All Animals Have to Adapt to Global Climate Change
    B. Rising Temperatures Are Destroying Animals' Bodies
    C. Climate Change Is Making Some Animals Shapeshift
    D. Warm blooded Animals Inform Us of Global W arming

When I was a boy I had the craziest bus ride to school everyday. First I had to get up early, wolf down my breakfast. and walk across the shaky and swinging wooden bridge that crossed the river between our house and the main road. Then I stood and waited for the bus to arrive. When it got there I climbed in. I was always one of the first ones on the bus. Then even though the bus was only 4 miles from school, I started a ride that would last more than 45 minutes.
First. the bus went in the opposite direction for 6 miles, parked and waited for another bus to transfer kids onto it. Then it started back, but instead of going straight to my school, it started up a long and winding mountain road pausing at every house to pick up more kids. The road swirled( 盘绕) around the mountain and back down with the bus getting fuller, louder, and noisier with each stop. Finally, it arrived at the high school to drop off the older kids before heading on to my grade school. But even then it didn't go straight there but instead headed down another rocky dirt road that was full of potholes(坑洼) to pick up even more children. I usually got to the school stressed, tired, and just before the first class bell rang.
Thankfully, the ride home was different. During it the last kids picked up became the first kids dropped off. But I was different. Since my house was along the way, I got dropped off after just 10 minutes or so. I remember I would literally run across that shaky old bridge because I was so happy to be home again,

    (Text 1)
M: I left my bicycle by that tree, but it's not there anymore.
W: Perhaps it got in my father's way when he was parking his car.
M: Oh, there, on the other side of the road by the street light.
    (Text 2)
W: You' re looking well, David!
M: I played basketball last month, but I stopped. I've done a lot of swimming instead.
W: It shows! I'm thinking of taking up tennis again.
    (Text 3)
W: Thanks for lunch! It was delicious!
    M: It's OK.
W: Next time lunch is on me.
    M: All right.
    (Text 4)
W: I want to get into that math class, but I find out that there are so many people on the waiting list. I guess chances are probably slim.
M: I wouldn't say that! Many people might drop the class and then there will be some openings.
    (Text 5)
W: Your cycle trip was through Europe, wasn't it?
M: Well, part of Europe. I started across the border in France, down through Spain to the south of the country. It was fantastic and easier than my previous ride in Switzerland.
    (Text 6)
W: When I was a child, my ambition was to be a train driver.
M: That isn't a suitable job for women!
W: Yeah. Well, my uncle drove a train and I wanted to be just like him.
M: Why didn't you realize your dream?
W: Well, my parents objected. Now, of course, I realize that it's dangerous and extremely demanding. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a chemist. But I gave it up because my grades were bad.
M: How do you feel about your nursing work here?
W: It is badly paid and stressful! But I think it is rewarding to look after patients.
    (Text 7)
M: Mrs. Anderson, welcome back! How was the vacation?
W: It was great. I stayed at a tiny hotel by the lake, hiked during the day, and visited local restaurants in the evenings. Thanks for watering my plants when I was away.
M: That's not a problem at all. You were such a great help when we went on vacation last month, Oh, here are all your newspapers by the way. We picked them up for you while you were away.
    (Text 8)
W: One day I'd like to buy an electric car. They 're much cleaner than petrol cars. But I'm not sure if I'll see many on the road in the near future.
M: But you can buy them,
    W: Really?
M: Sure, and they have the most powerful type of engine. Unfortunately they' re much more expensive than petrol cars. But what makes me anxious is that when they' re cheaper, more people will buy them. With more cars on the road, we'll have more traffic jams, especially at eight in the morning. It's the worst time of the day.
W: Yes. I try to avoid the rush hour now. I leave home before seven.
M: In Melbourne, drivers are not allowed to park cars along busy roads during rush hours to create an extra passage for traffic. This town needs better public transport. The buses don't go to the right places. And they are always late. Last week I waited for a No. 29 bus for over an hour...
    (Text 9)
W: Hello. My name is Margaret. My friend Janet joined your telephone service plan several days ago. I want to join the same plan…
M: May I know which plan you are referring to?
W: Actually, she just described her plan to me. It provides voice mailbox service, which is very important to me. Being a teacher, sometimes I just can' t answer the phone when I'm giving a lecture.
M: All the five plans in our price list provide voice mailbox service.
W: Really? How about downloading songs?
M: How about Plan C? It provides two songs.
W: Just two songs? That's not enough. But $ 10 every month is very attractive. By the way, I also want the plan to have long distance call service, since my sister lives in Canada.
M: I'm afraid that you have to buy an extra service for long distance calls. That's $5 per month,
W: OK. Then just help me apply for Plan C and the long -distance call service you were talking about.
    (Text 10)
W: Good morning everybody. This has been my second trip to Tokyo, and I would like to thank the school for having invited me to give you this talk. I would like to focus mainly on how to improve your English for practical purposes. It is my belief that to improve a language, it is important for one to continuously use that language. In English, as in most languages, there are four main aspects of speaking, listening, reading and writing. I believe two activities can help all four of these. Firstly, reading a newspaper has always been noted to be able to help improve one's English. However, I personally feel that reading books is more useful. While newspaper reading can improve your English, I feel that it may be too boring and not interesting to secondary school students. Books on the other hand are pastimes that have many levels. The second activity that I think is useful is watching the news. I know I just said that the news is boring, but I think watching the news can be interesting to students. Another advantage of watching the news is that you can learn how to use body language while speaking. I hope my speech has been helpful to you all. Thank you for taking the time to listen.

    第一节
    One possible version:
    Dear David,
I'm really excited to share with you a piece of good news. Our school is going to hold a photography exhibition themed “Charming China” in the library next month, whose aim is to present the beauty of China through photos.
I know you love photography, so why not send some of your photos of places or people in China that impress you most? The pictures can be of different sizes and must give people positive feelings. It's said that you've been to many places in China and have taken many pictures. You choose your favorite one and I am sure visitors will like your work. Finally, your work shall be sent to charmingphoto@sina.com before this Sunday.
Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    LiHua
    第二节
    One possible version:
Looking back now I can see my whole life here has been one crazy long bus ride. It has been full of stops, starts, twists, turns and lots of passengers, some mean but most kind. Sometimes the scenery has been beautiful and sometimes not so much. Sometimes the road has been smooth and sometimes rocky. Through it all, though, I have taken comfort in knowing that one day I will be going home again. I will be so happy to be there too. I will run into the arms of those who went before me,have glory in the love I have shared, dance in the light, and be welcomed home with our family's smile.
Do your best to enjoy the ride this life gives you. Take the trip with love in your heart and kindness in your soul. Make the journey better for those you meet along the way. And then when your time here is done, you can get off the bus, walk into the light, and find yourself so happy to be home again!
