Gilliam was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1933 as the seventh child of eight to a father who worked on the railroad and a homemaking mother. He attended the University of Louisville for both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but in 1962 moved to Washington, D.C., where he lived and had his studio (工作室) for the rest of his life. He became one of the leading artists of the Washington Color School—a 1950s movement that attached great importance to large fields of color.
He was very interested in freeing his paintings from the limit of canvases (画布) and frames. Instead, in his Drape works of the 1960s, he took unstretched canvases and hung them from ceilings or pinned them in great waterfalls to walls. Each time his work—part painting, part sculpture-was shown in an exhibition, it hung differently, never the same way twice.
In a 2018Morning Edition profile, Gilliam explained that the intention behind his Drape work was “to develop the idea of movement into shapes”—and that he was inspired by laundry (洗衣店) hanging from a clothesline.
His work is represented in the collections of some of the world’s most celebrated museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Tate Modern in London; and the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris. In 2015, he was awarded the U.S. State Department’s Medal of Arts Lifetime Achievement Award.
In the 2018 Morning Edition profile, the then 84-year-old Gilliam said that he felt that he was in his prime, despite health challenges. “I’ve never felt better in my life. I stopped drinking, I stopped smoking. I live for this period of being in the studio and actually working.”
    24. What do we know about Gilliam?
    A. He leads a 1950s movement.
    B. He stresses the large areas of color.
    C. He has a deep interest in the canvas.
    D. He likes to exhibit his paintings himself.
    25. What causes Gilliam to hang his paintings unusually?
    A. A detail in daily life.
    B. His strange imagination.
    C. His attention to paintings.
    D. An idea of movement.
    26. What can we infer about Gilliam in the last paragraph?
    A. He feels bad in his life.
    B. He loves painting deeply.
    C. He makes a living by painting.
    D. Smoking and drinking are his favorite.
    27. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. History. D. Culture.

A species of iguana (鬣蜥) that went extinct nearly 200 years ago on one of the Galápagos Islands appears to be making a comeback, with some help from a team of conservationists. The last person to spot a Galápagos land iguana on Santiago Island in Ecuador was Charles Darwin in 1835. When an expedition team from California arrived in 1906, the iguanas were nowhere to be found. And though this kind of iguana can still be found on the other Galápagos Islands, it’s believed to have been extinct on Santiago for the past 187 years—until now.
A team of scientists and park guardians discovered new lizards (蜥蜴) of various ages while walking the island in late July, which suggests the species has been successfully reintroduced. And according to Jorge Carrión, director of conservation of the Galápagos Conservancy, the ecosystem is thriving as a result. The evidence is in the details, he explained. Seeing lizards of different ages and coming across unmarked specimens means the iguanas are breeding (繁殖) in their natural environment.
Before joining the Galápagos Conservancy, Carrión worked for the Galápagos National Park Directorate, the caretakers of the islands’ ecosystems and resources. The GNPD is also the authority spearheading the iguana reintroduction project, with funding and assistance coming from the Conservancy. He said the collaborative has released more than 3,000 land iguanas on the island since January 2019.
Conservationists decided to reintroduce the land iguana after carefully considering how a return of the species would affect the ecosystem. These lizards are what’s known as an engineering species, like the Galápagos giant tortoise, in that they play a key role in keeping a healthy balance in an ecosystem.
“This kind of species are key for ecosystem in general,” Carrión said. “In this case it was the justification for the reintroduction of land iguanas, to return the natural dynamic to Santiago Island. When engineer species are not present, many imbalances occur in the ecosystem.”
    28. What does the author want to tell us about iguanas in Paragraph 1?
    A. They get help from an expedition team.
    B. They have returned to Santiago Island.
    C. They have disappeared for a few years.
    D. They were found on Santiago in 1906.
    29. What does the underlined word “thriving” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Growing strong. B. Becoming active. C. Working perfectly. D. Breaking down.
    30. Why are iguanas reintroduced?
    A. They can live on Santiago Island.
    B. They can help engineering species.
    C. They can keep the balance of nature.
    D. They play a role in Galápagos National Park.
    31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To show his concern about iguanas.
    B. To introduce the present situation of iguanas.
    C. To call on people to protect iguanas.
    D. To explain the reasons for iguanas extinction.
    D
A laser (激光) is a device that makes a beam (束) of light so narrow and strong that it can cut like a knife. When it was invented, no one knew that it would change modern medicine. But now, with this wonderful tool, doctors can safely perform operations and treatments that were once very dangerous or painful, or simply impossible with regular surgical instruments.
The first person to imagine something like a laser was Albert Einstein in 1917. He realized that it might be possible to create a very strong, bright beam of light by changing the way light acted. However, he never thought about this idea any further and neither he nor anyone else tried to produce a laser beam for many years.
Finally, in the late 1950s, scientists began experimenting with light and figured out how to create the strong beams we now know as laser beams. In these first experiments, they used mirrors and artificial gemstones (人造宝石) to change the light. Other scientists soon were producing the same results by sending light through special gases. The light created by either of these methods was very different from normal light. The beams from lasers remain narrow and do not spread out as light normally does, even over great distance.
In the early years after the invention of lasers, scientists called them “a solution looking for a problem.” It was obvious that lasers were very special, but it took scientists a while to find practical application (应用) for them. Over time, hundreds of uses have been found for lasers in many areas of science and technology. They are used in the newest telecommunication systems, in computer printers, and in CD players. They are also used in show business to create special lighting effects. But where lasers have made the most difference is undoubtedly in the world of medicine, where they can be used for many tasks that require fine exactness.
    32. What did Albert Einstein think of the laser beam?
    A. It could be created.
    B. He could change it.
    C. It might be dangerous.
    D. He could experiment with it.
    33. How did the scientists produce the laser beams?
    A. They used mirrors to spread out the light.
    B. They sent the normal light over great distance.
    C. They made the light pass through special gases.
    D. They used artificial gemstones to cover the light.
    34. What can we learn about the lasers from the last paragraph?
    A. They were applied quickly and widely.
    B. They help create special sound effects.
    C. They made a difference in medicine.
    D. They cannot be found in modern science.
    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. How to Create Strong Laser Beams
    B. Einstein’s Stories on Laser Beams
    C. Everything You Need to Know on Lasers
    D. Lasers: The Invention and Applications.

The Best Sleeping Positions for Improving Your Health
Most of us spend between 6 and hours asleep every night, so it makes sense that the position we lie in during this period can have a big effect on our health. 36 .
    Lie on the stomach
Believe it or not, this is the worst position to sleep in. Lying this way night after night can cause aches and pains as your spine (脊柱) is not in a natural position. 37 . This is because of your pillow being against your face all night. The only good factor for sleeping on your stomach is that it can decrease snoring (打鼾).
    38
Sleeping on your side is overall a pretty good position health-wise. It keeps your spine in a natural position which is great for preventing neck and back pain. 39 , and it can also reduce acid reflux (逆流). So this position is specially recommended to pregnant women, particularly if they lie on their left sides. However, it won’t do ageing skin or breasts any favours!
    Sleep on your back
40 . It allows your head, neck and spine to be kept in a more natural position, reducing any potential pains and aches. Wrinkles aren’t a worry with this position as your face is not pressed into your pillow all night. People think it is the best position to sleep in although it may cause loud snoring and heavy breathing.
    A. Be a side sleeper
    B. Sleep like a little baby
    C. What time do you sleep every night
    D. It is also not good for possible wrinkles (皱纹)
    E. It can improve heart circulation and blood flow
    F. This is by far the best position for most people to sleep in
    G. So which is the best to sleep in, and which ones should we try to avoid

The only 62 (survive) painting by the Northern Song Dynasty’s (960—1127) young genius artist Wang Ximeng, A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, is probably the 63 (fine) example of Chinese blue-green landscape paintings. With bright mineral pigments, the painter paints a vast country landscape, an ideal world of perfect order and harmony that people dream of. Now, nearly 1,000 years later, Chinese musicians are doing 64 same thing as Wang, but this time through the art of music.
The 65 (music) interpretation (演绎) of the masterpiece A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains first appeared in Shanghai as the closing performance of the Music in the Summer Air concert 66 (give) by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra on Sunday. Following the concert, the performance began on Wednesday 67 Xi’an, Shaanxi Province.
“Just as Chinese painting aesthetics stress the relationship between artistic conception and the viewer’s mentality, the music 68 (create) can help people understand the landscape and the heaven and sky in 69 (we) hearts as well as the feelings toward nature and humanity in the form of music,” the piece’s composer Zhao Lin 70 (tell) the Global Times on Tuesday.

M: No problem. I hope to see you at school tomorrow.
    (Text 5)
W: Tell me, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
    M: I enjoy drawing.
    W: I didn’t know you could draw.
M: I learned back in high school.
    (Text 6)
    W: Hello, Mary speaking.
M: Hi, Mary. This is Jack. I called you yesterday, but you were not at home. Didn’t your sister Jena tell you?
W: No, she probably forgot. She is busy preparing for her exams these days.
M: I tried your cell phone, but you didn’t answer.
W: Actually, I didn’t have my cell phone with me. Anyway, what did you want to tell me?
M: I wanted to invite you to dinner on Saturday. So do you have any plans then?
W: No, not at all, See you then.
    (Text 7)
W: What’s this supposed to be?
M: It’s my new bookcase. I just have to put it together.
W: Why didn’t you buy one which was ready?
M: To begin with. I like making things.
W: I know, but this is a lot of work. Is it worth it?
    M: Of course! I saved $50.
W: Wow, I had no idea.
M: You know what? The next thing I want to make is a car. Will you help me build it?
    W: What? You’re crazy!
    M: Relax. I’m only kidding!
    (Text 8)
W: Jim, you did put the suncream in the case, didn’t you?
M: Yes, of course, Cindy. I think we’ve got everything. Oh, hang on. You have packed our swimming things, haven’t you?
W: Sorry, I forgot. I’ll do that now.
M: We should take a present for Jacques, shouldn’t we?
W: Yes, we should, and I already thought of that. I bought him a beautiful book on modern art. You know, he always buys books about that. Now, what about your basketball? You like playing basketball. Do you want to take it with you?
M: I’d rather just be by the pool, reading and swimming.
W: Well, I want to go climbing with Jacques. You wouldn’t mind, would you?
M: Of course not! I might even come with you. Now, we should get going. Let’s get everything into the car.
    (Text 9)
M: Josie, do you remember Jeff in my office?
W: Yeah. I have seen him before at your party, and you have told me something about him.
    M: He left last week.
W: Left? Really? Do you know why?
M: He didn’t come in by Tuesday, so on Tuesday afternoon I called to see whether he was off the day or he was sick.
W: And what did he say?
M: No answer. I talked to my boss, and it seems that he tried to call Jeff in the morning before me. But he couldn’t get through either.
    W: Strange.
M: Anyway, by the end of the day, Jeff sent an e-mail explaining everything.
W: An e-mail? So, why did he leave?
M: Well, he found a new job last month, but he forgot to tell us about it.
W: You’re joking! How can anyone do that?
    (Text 10)
W: Well, my name is Cindy and recently, I’ve finished a tour which is not the type of thing I’d usually go for. But because we won it, we didn’t have to pay anything. We didn’t get off to a good start, though, because the bus from the airport to the hotel was awful. It took ages. The trip was all-inclusive, so all drinks and meals were included in the price. The drinks were fantastic! The hotel food was either tasteless or too hot, but the waiters were all friendly and knowledgeable at least. John decided he wanted to take a trip to a museum, so I went along. Actually, I didn’t really like it. It was pretty disappointing. I surely preferred being near the ocean. The beach was amazing and I went there several times. In the second week, John went off on his own into the mountains, but I stayed in the hotel. I once tried going on an elephant ride, but it was terrible. Elephants frightened me, so I gave up. The two weeks went by so quickly. We got back last night and, all in all, I think it was a great trip, really relaxing. I’m so glad we entered the competition.
