    On 26 December, 2004, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake ff the Indnesian cast sent a wall f water racing tward Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Lang was n the island f K Phi Phi, just suth f Phuket, Thailand, shpping n Main Street with her friend Rubina Wng, when suddenly everything changed. “Peple started running inland. Frm where we were, we culd nt see the beach s we had n idea what was ging n. Nbdy was saying it’s a tsunami,” she said.
    Lang and Rubina started running inland in the same directin as everyne else, when she nticed water racing int the island, but s strng and fast that she culd n lnger lift her feet t run.     Lang was stuck underwater between debris (碎片) with the surface just abve her face. “The mre I struggled (挣扎), the tighter I was stuck. I culd nt reach the surface. I thught I came here n my vacatin t die, and then I gt really angry,” she said. “I must have blacked ut because the next thing I remember is waking up underwater.”

    In the hurs after the earthquake that hit Nepal n April 25, 2015, thusands f rescue teams frm arund the wrld were sent there t help search fr survivrs thrugh the ruins. This can be a very tugh task, since it can take many hurs t safely dig survivrs, ften in need f immediate medical care, ut f the ruins.
    After spending 80 hurs in the ruins f a building utside Kathmandu, Rishi Khanal was pulled ut alive by a French search and rescue team. Khanal had been trying t get the attentin f rescue wrkers fr days. After the team fund him, they spent 10 hurs digging him ut. The team brke the cncrete (混凝土) that trapped Khanal within the building and pulled him up thrugh a hle befre carrying him away. Khanal suffered a brken leg.
    “What made his survival s unusual was that after the first three days, there was little chance f finding survivrs. It seemed he survived by willpwer,” said Akhilesh Shrestha, a dctr wh treated Khanal.
    Meanwhile, rescues f a different kind were taking place n Munt Qmlangma.
    On the brder (边境) between Nepal and its nrthern neighbr China, mre than 100 peple were trying t climb Munt Qmlangma when the earthquake hit. 19 peple were killed when an avalanche (雪崩) caused by the earthquake hit hundreds f tents (帐篷) at base camp. At least 61 peple were injured.
    The surviving climbers, wh were stranded (滞留) in tw different camps bth abve 21,000 feet, have all been rescued and returned t base camp.
