Sheep farmers can prfit by planting trees and selling carbn credits, accrding t a new study. The reprt by the University f Sheffield, published in the jurnal Envirnmental Research, suggests that farmers with mre than 60 acres f land culd turn a prfit if their land were returned t frest and they received £3 per tn f CO2 captured. The farmers culd then sell the carbn “credits” t cmpanies lking t ffset(抵消)their emissins(排放物), such as airlines.
The study was released as the UK farming sectr prepares t mve away frm the Basic Payment System t the new Envirnmental Land Management Scheme(ELMS),which fcuses n prducing “public gds”, such as recvering ecsystems, fld defenses and carbn strage. The research als suggests that if the UK increased its tree cver frm 8% t 12%, the amunt f carbn emissins captured by frests wuld increase by 10%.
“Sheep farming in the UK is nt prfitable withut subsidies(补贴),but frests that sell carbn credits can be ecnmically wrkable-s it makes sense fr the gvernment t help farmers transitin(过渡),”believes Clin Osbrne, the lead authr f the study. “In the end, these cme dwn t plitical questins f hw we want ur cuntryside t be used, hw we value livestck prductin ver the glbal csts f climate breakdwn and hw the gvernment supprts farmers and rural cmmunities.”
Hwever, critics say that the study is far t simplistic, with the Natinal Sheep Assciatin(NSA) saying land management shuld nt nly fcus n carbn emissins, but have t be multifunctinal. Speaking t Farmers Guardian, NSA CEO Phil Stcker says, “it's really easy fr scientists t justify the planting f frests thrugh a carbn calculatin(计算),because it is easy t measure hw much carbn is in a tree and then apply an ffset value.”
Mr Stcker ntes that grassland can effectively capture carbn and adds, “I appreciate trees as much as anyne, but t intrduce plicies t destry grasslands by creating frests is shrt-sighted at best.”
12. What is the new study abut?
A. Frests giving way t sheep farming.
B. UK sheep farmers preferring t plant trees.
C. Sheep farmers cntributing greatly t envirnmental prtectin.
D. UK sheep farmers getting paid fr replacing their grassland with frest.
13. What is the aim f the new ELMS?
A. T help sheep farmers get richer and richer.
B. T supprt thse suffering frm natural disasters.
C. T use the land in an envirnmentally-friendly way.
D. T encurage peple t plant mre trees n their land.
14. What d Clin Osbrne's wrds fcus n?
A. The rle f the gvernment.
B. The future f sheep farming.
C. The csts f climate breakdwn.
D. The prblems f rural cmmunities.
15. Which f the fllwing wuld Phil Stcker agree with?
A. It is meaningful t measure carbn emissins.
B. It is unwise t replace grassland with wdland.
C. Subsidizing farmers helps imprve sil quality.
D. Grassland plays a mre vital rle than wdland.
