In 1638, John Harvard donated some money and about four hundred books to a new university. This was the beginning of the library at Harvard University. The gift was so important that the university was named for John Harvard.
Thomas Bray began the first free lending library in the late 1600s. He set up more than 30 or these libraries in the American colonies. However, the idea for this kind of free library ended when Bray died in 1730. In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and some friends started the first subscription library in the United States. In a subscription library people pay money to become members, but they may borrow the books without paying again.
In the United States, every child had a free education. This idea soon led to free libraries. One of the first libraries that used tax money to buy books was a library in Peterborough, New Hampshire. This library was set up in 1833.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some
hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less
    disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a
waste of natural resources  and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as
much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing,
people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year!
Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better.
So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do
these things in your daily life:  Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out
and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school
canteen(食堂), use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
(       ) 1. Why do many hotels provide guests with some disposable(一次性) things?
    A. Let their guests be convenient during their travelling.
    B. Hope their guests use less disposable things.
    C. Wish their guests to save money.
    D. Want their guests to use more disposable things.
(      ) 2. Some Beijing hotels will no longer provide guests with __________.
    A. cheap food and drink             B. disposable things
    C. good service                     D. free TV programmes
(       ) 3. Which of the following is NOT true?
    A. Many disposable things are made of plastic.
    B. Throwing disposable things away is a waste of natural resources.
    C. Plastic is very bad for the environment.
    D. Plastic breaks down easily.
(       ) 4. What can we do to make our world a better place at home and school?
             A. Use shopping bags made of plastic.
             B. Do not throw away paper cups.
             C. Use disposable plates, bowls and chopsticks.
             D. Do not forget to reuse daily necessities(日用品).
    C
    Dear Sir,
I am writing to you about my stay at your hotel. My wife and I arrived on Saturday, 15th May and stayed for a week. Though we were treated well and found the service (服务) excellent, we think there are one or two matters we should bring your attention.
First of all, we had hoped for a nice holiday from our busy work lives, and your advertisement said "Comfortable and quiet". We want to have a chance to enjoy ourselves. However, we were always to waken up the noise every morning. Is it really necessary for the workers to start their repair work so early?
The second, we had hoped to swim in your "wonderful pool". To our disappointment(失望) ,we found that it was closed for the whole time of our stay.
I hope you do not mind me writing to you about these things, but I would be happy if you could give me some explanation (解释). As I said at the start, it is a pity, and your service is so well in other fields.
I hope to hear from you.
    Yours sincerely

During the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. They sang songs that they had brought from Africa while working. One person sang a line. Then a group of workers repeated it. The song’s words told of the hardships(艰苦) that people suffered. They clapped their hands and stomped(跺) their feet to the music.
In the 1860s, the music changed greatly. African American music took new forms. It was also influenced by dance music, which had great rhythm(节奏). Banjos(班卓琴) became popular. A blues singer usually sang a line and then played the banjo in reply. By the early 1900s, the guitar had taken the place of the banjo in the blues music.
The blues music has many obvious characteristics. One of them is that the musical notes() are often “bent”. That is, they are changed slightly to give a song more strength.
Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe everyday life. The lyrics are often about the relationships between men and women. They tell about sadness and overwork. They tell about finding and losing love, having money or being poor, being happy or sad and lonely. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech. A group of blues lyrics usually has three lines. The second line repeats the first line. The third line has different words.
By the 1940s, large numbers of African Americans moved to Chicago. There, a new kind of "Chicago" blues began. The new music was excellent dance music. Chicago blues led to the birth of a new music style -rock and roll.
