A
Some Japanese companies are producing robots for use in the home as companions. We would like to introduce three models that are more or less affordable.
Kirobo Mini, a small robot for use in home
Japanese carmaker Toyota sells the Kirobo Mini, a small robot designed for cuteness. So far, the robot can only understand Japanese. But it can respond when spoken to and can ask some questions. If you talk with Kirobo, it can remember the content of a discussion. In this way, the robot can get “smarter” and will be able to “grow up” over time. The robot is small—only 10 centimetres tall and its price is $350.
Aibo, a robotic dog
Sony is the Japanese maker, now, producing a robotic dog called Aibo. The Aibo is about 30 centimetres long and has natural looking eyes. It is also very cute. The eyes have a camera, so you can take a picture while playing with Aibo. The robotic dog can respond to a pink ball and plastic bone like real dogs. Sony is considering overseas sales but has not decided yet. However, Aibo is much more costly with a price of about $1,800.
Qoobo, cushion with a tail
Qoobo looks more like a cushion than a robot. Yukai Engineering in Tokyo makes Qoobo which has no face or legs. The robot only has a body and a tail. However, the company says the cushion can wave its tail slowly as a response to caresses and tapping. Qoobo is the biggest of the robots—at 33 centimetres in length. It is now available to order in Japan and the United States and is expected to be sent out later this year. Qoobo is the least costly of these robots at $90, but it does not have the ability to “learn” from its surroundings.
21.In which section of the newspaper does this passage belong to?
A.Economy. B.Science and Technology.
C.Entertainment. D.Education.
22.How can we arrange the order of the robots in length?
A.Kirobo Mini, Aibo, Qoobo. B.Qoobo, Kirobo Mini, Aibo.
C.Aibo, Kirobo Mini, Qoobo. D.Kirobo Mini, Qoobo, Aibo.
23.Which of the following statements is true?
A.Kirobo Mini can respond to a plastic bone like real dogs.
B.Qoobo is already on sale in the United States.
C.Kirobo Mini can really grow up over time.
D.Aibo is the most expensive among the three.

In the future, therapy patients may spend less time sitting in a therapist's office and more time exploring virtual worlds. Researchers have created a new virtual reality (VR) app to treat the fear of heights. The app just had a clinical trial.
People developed other VR therapies in the past. These programs needed a reallife therapist to guide patients through the treatment. But the new system only uses an animated avatar (虚拟化身) within the app. The avatar coaches patients as they climb a virtual highrise. This kind of therapistfree counseling could make it much easier for people to get help for fears and other disorders.
“This is ‘a huge step forward’ for VR therapy,” says Jennifer Hames, a clinical psychologist. “With this system, people don't need to visit a therapist's office to get expert help. They could get help in their regular doctor's office, or even at home. That could be good for people who aren't comfortable with facetoface therapy, or who can't afford it,” she says.
To test how effective their app was, Freeman and colleagues recruited (招募) 100 adult volunteers, who were moderately to severely afraid of heights. The researchers randomly assigned 49 people to have VR treatment while the other 51 participants got no treatment. Before the experiment began, participants filled out a questionnaire that rated their fear of heights from 16 to 80. They filled out the same questionnaire right after the treatment. Then they did it again two weeks later.
The scores of patients who got no treatment stayed the same. But people who used the VR app dropped an average of about 25 points on the scale. “The results give strong evidence that the new VR program is more helpful than no treatment at all. But it's not clear how well this type of system could work for more complex mental health issues,” says Mark Hayward, a clinical psychologist at the University of Sussex. “And when it comes to helping people with more severe symptoms, VR probably won't replace trained therapists any time soon.”
24.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The causes of the fear of heights.
B.The results of the fear of heights.
C.A VR app to treat the fear of heights.
D.The treatment of the fear of heights.
25.What do we know about the VR therapy?
A.It has a therapist to guide patients.
B.It is convenient and doesn't cost much.
C.It allows patients to climb a real highrise.
D.It requires patients to go to the therapist's office.
26.Why did Freeman's team conduct the experiment?
A.To rate the participants' fear of heights.
B.To check the effectiveness of the VR app.
C.To find out how severe people's fear of heights is.
D.To explore a new way to improve the treatment.
27.In helping people with more severe symptoms, ________.
A.the VR app is very helpful
B.the results of the app are not clear
C.trained therapists are still needed
D.no trained therapists are necessary

第一段是主题段,根据最后两句“Researchers have created a new virtual reality (VR) app to treat the fear of heights. The app just had a clinical trial.”
根据第二段的最后一句“...make it much easier for people to get help for fears and other disorders.”
根据第四段的第一句“To test how effective their app was, Freeman and colleagues recruited 100 adult volunteers...”
根据最后一段的最后一句“And when it comes to helping people with more severe symptoms, VR probably won't replace trained therapists any time soon.”

Intelligence makes for better leaders. It certainly makes sense that handling a market shift or anything like that requires intelligence. But new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ stops helping and starts hurting.
Decades ago, Dean Simonton, a psychologist from the University of California, Davis, came up with that brilliant leaders' words may simply go over people's heads, that their solutions could be more complicated to carry out and that followers might find it harder to relate to them. Now Simonton and two colleagues have finally tested that idea, publishing their results in Journal of Applied Psychology.
The researchers looked at 379 male and female business leaders in 30 countries across fields including banking, retail and technology. The managers took IQ tests and each was rated (划分等级) on the leadership style and effectiveness by an average of eight coworkers. The IQ positively correlated (相互关联) with ratings of leader effectiveness, strategy formation, vision and several other characteristics—up to a point. The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers. Beyond that, the ratings decreased. The researchers suggest the “ideal” IQ could be higher to 140 or lower to 100 in various fields, depending on whether technical or social skills are more valued in a given work culture.
“It's an interesting and thoughtful paper,” says Paul Sackett, a management professor at University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the research.“To me, the right interpretation (理解) of the work would be that it highlights a need to understand it is what highIQ leaders do that leads to lower understanding by followers,” he says. “The wrong interpretation would be ‘Don't hire highIQ leaders’.”
The study's lead author, John Antonakis, a psychologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, suggests leaders should use their intelligence to use creative language that will persuade and inspire others—the way former U.S. President Barack Obama did. “I think the only way a smart person can signal their intelligence properly and still connect with people,” Antonakis says, “is to speak in charming ways.”
28.According to the first paragraph, we know that ________.
A.wellknown leaders show the highest IQ
B.effective business depends on the intelligence of leaders
C.leaders with a higher IQ may do harm to teams
D. the higher IQ leaders have, the stronger leadership they have
29.According to Simonton, managers with an IQ of about __are probably the most efficient.
A.80 B.100 C.120 D.140
30.What is Paul Sackett's attitude towards hiring highIQ leaders?
A.Unconcerned. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
31.Why did Antonakis mention Barack Obama in the last paragraph?
A.To encourage us to learn more about leadership.
B.To explain how intelligent people achieve success.
C.To show creativity is more important than intelligence.
D.To emphasize the importance of using intelligence properly.

根据文章第一段中的“But new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ stops helping and starts hurting”可知,在某种程度上,有较高智商的领导者可能会损害团队。故选C。
根据文章第三段中的“The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers”可知,智商为120时,评价的等级达到最高。故选C。
根据文章倒数第二段中的“The wrong interpretation would be ‘Don't hire highIQ leaders’.”

There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier, “Paper or plastic?” Well, which type of bag would you choose?
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are better. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environmentfriendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There's no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don't seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do? How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: “What can I do to help the environment?”
32.The question at the end of Paragraph 1 is used to ________.
A.introduce the point for discussion B.tell readers how to save money
C.express the author's doubts D.show the kindness of the cashier
33.Compared with plastic bags, paper bags ________.
A.take more time to break down B.require less energy to recycle
C.need more water to produce D.have less influence on forests
34.What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Share. B.Put forward. C.Discuss. D.Give up.
35.Which question does the author probably hope the cashier ask?
A.Paper or cloth? B.A new bag or your own one?
C.A small bag or big one? D.Paper or plastic?

根据第二段第一句话“While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are better”可知,作者提出问题是为了引出下文的讨论“纸袋真的更好吗?”,故选A。
根据第三段中的“And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger”可知,制作纸袋的用水量更大。故选C。
根据第三段中的“Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper”可知,回收塑料比回收纸要更节约能源,故“the idea that paper bags are more environmentfriendly than plastic ones”可能很快会被放弃,故选D。
根据最后一段中的“There's no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags”可知,作者建议人们循环使用纸袋,故选B。
Is Fresh Air Really Good for You?
We all grew up hearing people tell us to “go out and get some fresh air.” __36__ According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.
__37__ If the air you're breathing is clean—which it would be if you're away from the smog of cities—then the air is filled with lifegiving, energizing oxygen. If you exercise out of doors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles (肌肉) and your brain.
Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing (治愈). __38__ In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery. It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood (情绪). Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. __39__ It gives us a great feeling of peace.
__40__ While the sun's rays can age and harm our skin, they also give us beneficial vitamin D. To make sure you get enough vitamin D—but still protect your skin—put on sunscreen right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that's plenty of time for your skin to absorb a day's worth of vitamin D.
A.Fresh air cleans our lungs.
B.So what are you waiting for?
C.Being in nature refreshes us.
D.Another side benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight.
E.But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said?
F.Just as importantly, we tend to associate fresh air with health care.
G.All across the country, recovery centers have begun building Healing Gardens.
根据设空处前句“go out and get some fresh air”,空格处马上针对呼吸新鲜空气这件事情进行提问,然后设空处后一句就是针对提问的回答“the answer is a big YES”,所以选E。
此外,G项中出现Healing Gardens,后一句马上出现In these places来指代Healing Gardens,因此答案是G。
In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery.

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray (流浪) dog, until he came to me.
I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.
It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the midnight I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.
There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.
It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?
I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.
The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest. “Shall we keep him with us?” I questioned my mom.
Like any other parents would, my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.
Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.

One possible version:
One day Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg. He came to my room and sat near me. It was then that I saw his hind leg was injured and was bleeding. I called out my mother and she quickly tied a bandage around his leg and gave him food to eat. I was very upset. But the next day, Spotty was up to his usual pranks though he limped a bit. After this incident my relation with Spotty became more intense. I really admired him a lot for his courage.
Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly. We came out and saw that he was barking continuously heading somewhere. After some time Spotty became quiet. I patted him on his back and came inside. The next day morning, my heart skipped a beat when I didn't see Spotty. I searched for him in each and every corner but he was nowhere. And this time he had gone and would never come back. I cried and waited for him. We waited for one long week. But there were no signs of him. Then one day my Dad got transferred to Mumbai. We shifted back to Mumbai. What would have happened to Spotty? Would he have died? These were the only questions in my mind, but they all remained unanswered forever.
