“Why d yu always aplgize befre yu ask a questin? I dn’t get it,” Dan asked. I lked at him blankly, nt understanding what he meant but felt that there was mre than a trace f annyance in his tne.
I felt defensive. I thught fr a mment. “There’s n reasn fr it, yu shuldn’t d that.” he said. “Srry if it annys yu,” I respnded. I prbably annyed him again by aplgizing again.
This happened ver 35 years ag. I thught abut it then, and I still reflect n it nw. Asking questins in class r in cnversatin isn’t that simple, at least nt t me.
As I thught abut it, many things came int play. First was self-cnsciusness and insecurity. Maybe I had missed smething the prfessr said. I knew sme students, as a result f thse dubts, didn’t ask questins.1 had enugh cnfidence t ask, but nt enugh t nt sften it. I realized, as Dan pinted ut, that 1 likely did start with smething like, “Srry, maybe I missed this, but can yu explain...”I wndered whether there was anything s wrng with that.
I dn’t think it ccurred t me at the time, but it did years later, that it als prbably related t being female. I knew that as a wman there was a line f nt cming acrss t aggressively.
Besides, I became cnscius f nt implying judgment--I didn’t want a prfessr t think I was questining their expertise, r suggesting they were a bad teacher. It seemed like a reasnable strategy t start by acknwledging that I culd be wrng r uninfrmed.
Befre Dan’s cmment, I hadn’t thught abut it cnsciusly, much less cnsidered that there culd be a dwnside t ding it. But I was learning that there was. If Dan was any example, it culd be unpleasant. I didn’t want t g arund aplgizing fr my existence. As I’ve gtten lder, I think I’ve dne it less.

Nisy brthers r sisters? Lud cnstructin right utside yur windw? A flexible new ludspeaker culd help yu rest easy. It culd smeday tum yur walls int nise-canceling systems. And when yu’re ready t liven things up, use the same wallpaper—r the surfaces f ther rdinary bjects in yur rm—t play music.
The new ludspeaker is super thin—abut as thick as a few sheets f paper. It’s lightweight and flexible enugh t stick t mst surfaces. And yu can make it big, as in wall-sized, ntes Jinchi Han. He’s an electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy in Cambridge.
Lts f dme-shaped (圆顶状) micrstructures cver the surface f the speaker. The researchers start with a thin, flat sheet f sme material. Then they use pressure t pull that material thrugh penings t create the dme shapes. When squeezed, the material they use creates an electric charge. But applying an electric field acrss the material will als cause the dmes t expand and cntract, Han explains. That can generate sund.
Han pints t anther benefit f this tech. Large expanses f the new material culd make cntrlling nise a lt easier. Nise-canceling systems already exist. But whether it wrks fr a listener depends n where that listener’s ears are in relatin t the appraching sund waves.
Trying t cancel nise this way everywhere inside a rm wuld be tricky, Han pints ut. It wuld take lts f micrphnes and speakers, which can be expensive.
Here, each dme wrks as a tiny speaker. The dmes can generate sund waves in grups r individually. Wallpapering yur bedrm with this material wuld create speakers all arund yu. Thse same speakers als culd cancel unwanted sund. When desired, yu culd turn any space int “a quiet zne where yu culd sleep r study withut t much nise,” Han says. He als sees applicatins in cars, airplanes, apartments r anywhere unwanted nise is a prblem.
28. What is the new feature f the ludspeaker?

B. It is made f a kind f paper.
C. It can prduce high quality sund.
D. It can stick t mst bjects easily.
29.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. What the speaker lks like.
B. Hw the sund is prduced.
C. Hw the dmes are created.
D. What functins the dmes have.
30.What decides the effect f the ld nise-canceling systems?
A. The number f dmes in the ludspeakers.
B. The length f the appraching sund waves.
C. The distance between ears and sund waves.
D. The frequency f the newly prduced waves.
31.Which wrd can be used t describe this technlgy?
A. Ppular.B. Prmising.C. Cmplex.D. Expensive.

Want t help butterflies? A new study suggests turning ff the lights.
Light pllutin at night can disturb its abilities t recgnize directins, researchers have fund. Artificial light can disrupt their circadian (昼夜) rhythms and affect their sense f directins. That can make the butterflies disriented when they try t fly the next day.
“Darkness is imprtant t butterflies since the internal circadian clck f butterflies functins nrmally when they are expsed t natural day-night lighting cycles," study authr Patrick Guerra, an assistant prfessr at the University f Cincinnati, tells Treehugger.
Mnarch butterflies migrate (迁徙) by the millins each year, making the trip frm nrthern areas f the cntinent t Califrnia and Mexic and back. Because mst butterflies nly live fr a few weeks t a few mnths, it takes several generatins f butterflies t cmplete the migratin. But t much light at the wrng time can urge the butterflies t take ff when they shuld be resting instead fr their vyage.
“As mnarch butterflies are a threatened species with their ppulatin numbers in decline, we wanted t see what types f envirnmental stress might be linked t their decline,” Guerra says.
Fr their study, researchers cnducted lab studies where they reprduced the effects f artificial light pllutin with butterflies using a flight simulatr (模拟器).
They first tested if mnarchs treated a single, artificial light surce as if it were the actual sun during the day. Once they established that they did, they then tested hw the mnarchs wuld behave when expsed t this same artificial light surce during their night.
Butterflies stayed quiet and unmving when they were first placed in the flight simulatr in the dark. But as sn as scientists turned n the light, they started flying. The light made them believe that night was day and this can cause them t fly lnger at night r start flying t early.
“These findings demnstrate hw urbanizatin can negatively affect imprtant bilgical phenmena, and therefre allw us t understand hw human activity impacts the rest f nature,” Guerra says.
32.What des the underlined wrd“disriented" in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Slw dwn.B. Die ff.C. Feel sleepy.D. Get lst.
33.What did the researchers want t find ut in the study?
A. Why the mnarch butterflies migrate.
B. What reduced the number f mnarch butterflies.
C. Why darkness is imprtant t mnarch butterflies.
D. Hw mnarch butterflies adapt t the envirnment.
34. What might be used in the experiment?
A.A flashlight.B. The sun.C. The mn.D. A clck.
35.What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Natural Light Is Imprtant t Insects
B. Mnarch Butterflies Are in Great Danger
C. Butterflies React Actively t Air Pllutin
D. Light Pllutin Can Affect Butterfly Migratin
