    Unit 6 The Media

    A

Nowadays, more and more employers and employees work online either full-time or part-time,and that number is continuing growing. Its believed that flying around the world for face-to-face company meetings is a waste of time and money. An effective choice to get rid of it is to use web meetings.

A large number of group presentations, training classes and meetings are done online without losing the face-to-face experience.Web meetings are online meetings where an organiser invites attendees to listen to or watch an online presentation by presenters.Besides, web meetings can be recorded for later use.

Presenters can take real-time surveys to study how to hold a successful meeting. Some web meeting software programmes can monitor the users desktop behaviour to see if they become distracted from the presentation and begin working on other documents. If so,the programme can tell presenters when the listeners lose their attention, and how long the distraction lasts. In this way,the presenters will know which parts of their meetings need improving.

Web meetings can work well because theyre hosted on a server (服务器).Images from the presenters desktop are taken, uploaded to a server and then downloaded by people who have access to the server, web meetings require a powerful server to deal with several images a second and serve them back to thousands of users at the same time.

Companies have two choices when it comes to these servers. They can either buy a special web meeting server to host their meetings on-site,or they can pay for a web meeting service every time and let the off-site provider worry about hosting the meetings. The choice depends on how frequently the company holds web meetings, the average number of people attending the meetings, and the quality of engineering and information technology.

Web meetings are an excellent example of how technology is changing the way we do business. With all the technologies today, the traditional office might soon be a thing of the past.

21.The purpose of this passage is .

C.to introduce the benefits of using web meetings

D.to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of web meetings

22.In what way do some web meeting software programmes help improve the meetings?

    A.By tracking the users state.

    B.By giving useful suggestions.

    C.By sharing detailed technical data.

    D.By providing other presenters videos.

23.It is better for a company to buy a web meeting server if it .

A.relies little on the quality of IT

B.holds web meetings twice a week

    C.doesnt have so many employees

D.has branches in the same city or province

24.What can we infer about web meetings?

B.Web meetings work without the help of a server.

C.Web meetings determine the quality of engineering.

D.Web meetings are likely to be widely used.

Children are starting on digital devices at ever younger ages, and opinions on the effects of childrens digital-media habits are deeply polarized (两极分化的).

Jean Twenge,a psychology professor, thinks excessive use of the Internet and social media makes children lonely and depressed and poses serious risks to their physical and particularly their mental health, sometimes to the point of driving them to suicide.

However,Daniel Kardefelt-Winther of the Innocenti research office of Unicef examined various evidence and found less cause for alarm than is often suggested. Most of the studies be examined seem to show that the technology helps children stay in touch with their friends and make new ones.

The relationship between the use of digital technology and childrens mental health, broadly speaking, appears to be u-shaped.Researchers have found that moderate use is beneficial, whereas either no use at all or extreme use could be harmful.

What worries some experts more is that screens are becoming part of the middle-class armoury (武器库) for perpetuating (巩固) social advantage.Children from well-off homes are enrolled in private classes to learn skills like How to be a YouTuber, which poorer parents cannot afford.

25.What is Daniel Kardefelt-Winthers attitude to the use of digital media?

    A.Objective. B.Favorable.

    C.Indifferent. D.Uncertain.

26.What can you infer from the last paragraph?

A.Not all children from rich homes can attend private classes.

B.Not all children from poor homes can learn skills like How to be a YouTuber.

C.Digital media is the only way of strengthening the middle-class.

D.Digital media can widen class gap.

27.What is the best title for the text?

A.Should Children Interact with Digital Media?

B.Should Parents Allow Their Children Interact with Digital Media?

C.What Children Do to Interact with Digital Devices.

D.How Children Interact with Digital Devices.

28.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The disadvantages of overusing digital media.

B.The bad effects of using digital media.

C.Several bad impacts of using digital media.

D.The advantages of overusing digital media.

At eleven,I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the YMCA offering exactly the opportunity. My mother continually warned against it,and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the YMCA pool was safe.

I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.

The pool was quiet.I was afraid of going in all alone,so I sat on one side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy.He yelled,Hi,howd you like to be ducked? With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end.I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my witswhen my feet hit the bottom,I would make a big jump to come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down.I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water.I tried to yell but no sound came out.I went down, down, endlessly.

When I came to consciousness,I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.

I never went back to the pool.I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by.It deprived(剥夺) me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally,I decided to get an instructor.Piece by piece,he built a swimmer.Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not.Sometimes the terror would return.

This went on until July.I swam across the Lake Went worth.Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake,I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water.I laughed and said,Well,Mr Terror, what do you think you can do to me?

I had conquered my fear of water.

29.What was the authors original fear of water caused by?

    A.His poor skill in swimming.

    B.His mothers warning of drowning.

C.An outing to the beach with his father.

D.An unpleasant memory of the pool.

30.Why was the author not scared to death when he was thrown into the water?

A.He knew how to swim in the pool.

B.He felt that the YMCA pool was safe.

C.He was waiting for others to save him.

D.He came up with an idea to go upwards.

31.What does the author probably mean by expressing but I was not in Paragraph 5?

A.He was still a poor swimmer.

B.He had not overcome the fear yet.

C.He was not afraid of drowning any more.

D.He was not satisfied with the swimming training.

32.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Goodbye,Mr Terror

    B.Hello,Childhood Fear

    C.A Swimming Adventure

    D.My Passion for Swimming

One of my earliest memories was watching my mum talking on our old phone.I was fascinated that she could talk to someone who wasnt actually in the room with her. 36 I was wondering how she managed to talk with someone she couldnt see.

37 Later,we had mobile phones that could be carried around the room. Then came computers and smart phones. These days I can send an email around the world in a second. My daughters smart phone has a hundred apps and a dozen social media accounts. She stores all of her information in a mysterious place known as the cloud, where she can take it out at any time.It seems that we are more connected in this world than ever before.

38 Few take time to talk face to face.Instead of looking into eyes of our beloved ones,we stare at our screens. It seems as if the most connected generation is also the loneliest.

Dont let technology take our time and ruin our life.Make the time to meet and to communicate with each other.Take a walk on the beach with a friend.Have a long conversation with the phones off and the hearts on. 39

Remember that we are here to love each other, help each other and make this world a better place. 40 But when it cant, turn it off.

A.That was a long time ago.

B.Connect offline as well as online.

C.We should communicate with each other with phones off.

D.Smart phones have both advantages and disadvantages.

E.When your technology can help to do these things, then use it.

F.However, what bothers me is that we rarely associate with each other nowadays.

G.When she left the room,I slowly walked over to the phone and stared at it for a while.

    第二节(满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    Caught in the Web!

Dave and Kelly loved their computer.Their parents got it for them a couple of months ago,and they had taught their kids how to use it.They bought some computer games for the kids to play and connected the computer to the Internet. The kids loved going on the Internet and visiting websites. They got to do research for their homework, play games, print colouring pages and read stories. They also got to email their friends and even chat with other kids, after getting their parents permission.

Because the kids liked the Internet so much, they would finish their homework, and then go to surf the Internet.Very often, they didnt feel the passage of time and found themselves almost falling asleep in front of the computer screen.

One day they stayed up late surfing the Internet after they were done with their homework. They watched a video about a science fiction story, which described two alien species hunting human information, because aliens had a wicked intention to conquer the Earth. The species coming from a distance tried to collect every aspect of data about humans, but in vain. They were detected and driven away by watchful humans. After a while they started getting tired and they were almost falling asleep. While they were in the twilight between being asleep and being awake, they felt a strong suction coming from the computer screen. It felt like a huge vacuum cleaner!

By now, they were fully awake but when they looked around, they did not see their living room anymore.Instead, they were drawn into the computer itself by that mysterious power. They were surrounded by a complex system of tubes and small boxes and columns. They were all in different shapes, such as being tall, short, wide, narrow, round, square, etc.More strangely, they all felt a little warm and some even were shining with real, blue or orange light. They saw themselves floating in a long tube with speeding chunks of alphabets, numbers, images, and sounds. They were INSIDE the computer!

    注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Their dream came true and they decided to let loose and drift along the long tubes and have some fun.

But after a few days they started missing something and that was the feel of love.

    参考范文:

    Dear Tom,

How are things going with you?Hearing that you are also having online classes at home,Id like to share with you my opinion about it.Since the outbreak of the COVID -19,we have experienced a long period of online classes, which have benefited us a lot.First, without teachers guidance in person,it is an opportunity to improve our ability of self-control,encouraging us to keep focused on what we are learning.Additionally,we can communicate more with teachers online whenever we have questions. However, for online classes, there is a lack of classroom learning atmosphere. It could be more effective if we are provided with more interactions when taking the lessons.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Yours,

    第二节

    参考范文:

Their dream came true and they decided to let loose and drift along the long tubes and have some fun. They travelled all over the world and they found themselves even in the White House;they found it was fun to spy on people that couldnt see them. They travelled through the long tubes to see things and people that they had always wanted to see. They got to watch the president who stayed up and they were the first ones to know about his new decisions. They had a blast.

But after a few days they started missing something and that was the feel of love.Life wasnt all that fun without a hug from their mama and daddy;they wanted to come home but how could they? There was only one way and that was through the heart. They had to want to come back so badly that it even meant they had to listen to the rules that Mum and Dad made and do research for schoolwork instead of playing computer games so much. They finally opened their eyes as their mother said it was time to get up for school.
