    Memo
    To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mo, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
    Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their children to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录)for your reference when you answer the phones.
    Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $ 10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
    Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6: 00 p.m. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, Jogging, outdoor aerobics(有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
    Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2: 30 p.m. and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $ 75/hour. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
    Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i, e. 2: 45p.m. to 3: 45p.m.). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $ 10 per visit.
    1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6: 00 p.m.
    B. Students selecting basketball had better register early.
    C. Hiking usually begins at 2: 30 p.m. and lasts 2 hours.
    D. Students having swimming suits can take up swimming.
    2. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Students taking part in basketball will walk to the courts.
    B. Every student can gain admission to one of the four sports.
    C. Hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees.
    D. Students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water.
    3. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
    A. each sport will take only one hour
    B. students will be charged for the four sports
    C. all the sports will take place at Kowloon Peak
    D. teachers will accompany students on each sport

Some young Cambodians are learning a new sport-skateboarding. The country’s first skateboard park is located on the grounds of a local charity group at the edge of Phnom Penh, the capital.
Sports like Khmer boxing and soccer are wildly popular in Cambodia. But Chea, who has been skating for 6 months, says skating has already become his favourite sport.
The skaters are learning tricks like launching off a jump or half-pipe and flying through the air on their narrow wooden boards.
A non-governmental organisation called Skateistan Cambodia organises weekly programmes at the park. Skateistan started its work in Afghanistan years ago. Rory Burke is working with the group which expanded to Cambodia last year.
Rory Burke points out, “Yeah, it’s definitely not a typical Cambodian pastime(消遣). And I think the idea of ‘why skateboarding’ is that it’s not been done before here. We want to use skateboarding as something saying, ‘Hey, this is new, this is something different.’ And that kind of itself becomes a little bit of hook. People see it and they think and they say, ‘Wow, what is that?’ and they want to get involved.”
Skateistan partners with local groups work with young people. The park is on the grounds of the group known as PSE, where children attend school and learn a trade. There are almost one hundred twenty participants. They all come from troubled lives.
Seventeen-year-old Sang Rotha is a student at PSE. “Sometimes I don’t do well on subjects like math,” he says, “I feel bad when I find it hard to keep up with my lessons. So that is why I skateboard—to improve my bad feelings.”
He says he began skateboarding more than a year ago. Before he started training, it seemed very easy. But it was very difficult to learn tricks, and he got hurt a lot from falling off.
Rory burke says learning to deal with the diffficulties is part of the lesson for these young skateboarders.
    4. What is said about skateboarding in the passage?
    A. It is easy for young Cambodians to learn.
    B. It is a good sport to help regain good feeling.
    C. It originated in Afghanistan years ago.
    D. It is as popular as Khmer boxing in Cambodia.
    5. The underlined part a little bit of hook probably means ________.
    A. something strange
    B something quite new
    C. something different
    D. something attractive
    6. It can be inferred from the passage that skateboarding is becoming ________.
    A. a sport liked by most young Cambodians
    B. an increasingly popular sport in Cambodia
    C. a sport used to better young Cambodians’ life
    D. a good way to train young Cambodians’ learning skills
    C
For some people, walking or running outdoors is a great way to work out. What may not be so pleasant is seeing trash all over the ground. Well, some people are doing something about it. They are plogging!
“Plogging” began in Sweden. The name combines the Swedish word “plocka” which means to pick up, and the word Jogging, which means to run slowly. A Swedish man named Erik, started the movement in 2016. On the World Environment Day website, Erik says that he moved to Stockholm from a small community in northern Sweden each day he would ride his bike to work. Concerned about the amount of trash and litter he saw each day on his way to work, he took matters into his own hands.
Plogging, by that term, may have officially begun in Sweden. But many people who exercise outdoors have been doing this for years. Take Jeff Horowitz for example, he is a personal trainer in Washington D.C. He often picks up trash while running outside. He even has turned it into a game; he will try to pick up the trash without stopping. “I didn’t know it was a thing really. This is just my persona ethics(道德标准), where I go for a run and if I happen to see a piece of garbage lying around and it’s within reach—it is a kind of a little test for me to see if I can grab it and throw it in a near trash can without stopping. And that way, I think, it gives me a little exercise and a little focus for my run. And it helps clean up the neighbourhood,” he announced.
Today, logging is an official activity, one that is becoming increasingly popular. Cities around the world now hold logging events, “I would just hope people would think twice before dropping a garbage on the ground. We have containers… seems on every block. So, it’s easy to put your garbage in the trash cans. I just think people should think about it a little bit more. I do hope one day there will not be a need for logging.” said an interviewee.
    7. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “took matters into his own hands”?
    A. called on people to join him
    B. appealed to people to go green
    C. began to pick up the trash
    D. had the collected trash recycled
    8. Like Jeff horowitz, plogging to many people has become a (an) ________ act.
    A. automatic
    B. irresistible
    C. arbitrary
    D. temporary
    9. What is the idea that logging events are meant to promote?
    A. Jogging is truly beneficial.
    B. Trash cans should be within reach.
    C. Littering is not acceptable.
    D. Communities should be kept clean.
    10. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
    A. New Exercise Enjoys Unbelievable Popularity
    B. New Exercise Trend Also Helps Environment
    C. Plogging-a Fashionable Way to Clear Waste
    D. Plogging-an Exercise Originating in Sweden

    五、概要写作(25分)
    阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
    Take care of your spine(脊柱)
The spine stands at the center of your health, providing your body with structure and support. It also contains your spinal cord, a massive collection of nerves conveying electric signals from the rest of your body to your brain. Since your spine is so central to health, it’s important to look after it.
Maintain good posture(姿势)is one of the most important things you can do to keep your spine healthy. Proper posture means standing or sitting while keeping your spine straight, except for its natural curves. Posture comes into play even when you’re asleep. Sleeping on your side puts less stress on your spine than most other positions. Staying still for too long—even if your posture is good—can be hard on your back. Especially if you look at a desk most of the day, it’s important to get up and stretch periodically.
Exercise is also an important factor in the health of your spine. Stretches can help the muscles around your spine relax and allow bones to shift into better arrangement. Strength exercises like pushups can also help by strengthening the muscles around your spine. However, don’t overdo the exercise, as repeated motions can strain the muscles around your spine.
Finally, your diet affects the health of your spine because many vitamins are necessary for bones and nerves. In particular, B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids keep nerves healthy, so you may want to consider taking a supplement. Another important factor is vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones. Vitamin D can come from some foods, but it’s also absorbed from sunlight, so it may help to do some of those back exercises outside. Many of the actions necessary to keep your spine healthy are identical to those need to preserve your health in other ways. So protect our back, and the rest of body will benefit.

故填his。
    2. for解析:考查介词。句意:他擅长与公牛搏斗,这是一种以攻击性行为著称的动物。be known for…意为“因……而出名”,为固定短语, 本句为形容词
    短语作后置定语。故填for。
    3. worries解析:考查一般现在时和主谓一致。句意:这名24岁的男子将武术和斗牛结合在一起,这让他的母亲很担心。分析句子可知,本句为一般现在时, 主语为The 24-year-old’s mixing of martial art and bullfighting,谓语动词用第三人称单数。故填worries。
