    一、阅读理解

    A

Education appears to protect older adults especially women, against memory loss, according to a study by investigators at Georgetown University Medical Center.

The study tested declarative memory in 704 older adults (5898 years of age). Declarative memory refers to our ability to remember events, facts, and words, such as where you put your keys or the name of that new neighbor. The investigators found that their memory performance became progressively worse with aging. However, more years of early-life education countered these losses, especially in women.

For example, the declarative memory abilities of an 80-year-old woman with a bachelors degree would be as good as those of a 60-year-old woman with a high school education. So, four extra years of education make up for the memory losses from 20 years of aging.

Simply said, learning brings about learning, says the studys senior investigator, Michael Ullman. Since learning new information in declarative memory is easier if it is related to knowledge we already have, more knowledge from more education should result in better memory abilities, even years later, adds the studys lead author, Jana Reifegerste.

Evidence suggests that girls often have better declarative memory than boys, so education may lead to greater knowledge gains in girls, says Ullman. Education may thus particularly benefit memory abilities in women, even years later in old age.

The study tested individuals in a non-Western population. Participants varied in the number of years of education, from none at all to graduate studies. Future research is needed to test whether the findings can be generalized to other populations, Ullman says.

These findings may be important, especially considering the rapidly aging population globally, Reifegerste says. The results argue for further efforts to increase access to education.

Education has also been found to delay the beginning of Alzheimers disease, Ullman says. We believe that our findings may shed light on why this occurs.

    1. What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. Declarative memory abilities fail with aging.

    B. Women should try to obtain a bachelors degree.

    C. Learning regularly helps improve old adults memory.

    D. Early-life education helps prevent memory loss in old age.

    2. What does the underlined word countered in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Canceled. B. Changed.

    C. Replaced. D. Reduced.

    3. What may the research findings help to do?

    A. Slow down the process of aging.

    B. Promote the development of education.

    C. Advance the study of Alzheimers disease.

    D. Ensure the equal rights of womens education.

It was an amazing feeling to be acknowledged for the Pride of Britain award at No.10 Downing Street.

The last thing you expect when doing something as ordinary as picking your son up from a sleepover is to end up saving three peoples lives in a plane crashbut thats exactly what happened to me in May this year.

I think I was acting unconsciously. I jumped out, leaving Giacomo in the car.

The plane was upside down and flames were coming out of the drivers seat and I could hear screaming. I think there must have been roughly half a minute between getting the first and last person out. Then another guywho turned out to be Joel Snarrarrived on the scene to help at just the right time. I dont think Id have been able to get the pilot outhe was a big guy. There is no way he would have survived if Joel hadnt been there. I could tell straight away Joel had a military background by how he conducted himself. Wed just got all three of them to a safe distance when the aircraft was completely swallowed by the flames.

Giacomo and I stared at each other, almost laughing in relief.

The emergency services arrived pretty quickly, and we were at the scene for a couple of hours while they dealt with the fire and cleared the roads. Afterwards I spoke to the family, and that the first time the emotion of the whole thing hit me. I kept randomly bursting into tears.

Thankfully, Stuart Moore, the pilot, and his nephew and niece Jack Moore, 19, and Billie Manley, 16, have all since made a full recovery. Jack and Billie were suffering a lot more than I was. Although they were safe, the memory of being inside that burning plane would have been more of an emotional scar.

    4. What do we know about the author?

    A. He prided himself on being helpful.

    B. He regretted having saved the family.

    C. He was overcome by fear and despair then.

    D. He was well equipped with first-aid knowledge.

    5. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

    A. Joel Snarrs character.

    B. The importance of teamwork.

    C. The rescue process.

    D. An investigation of the air crash.

    6. Why did the author and Giacomo almost laugh in relief?

    A. It was a narrow escape.

    B. They both appreciated Joels help.

    C. They both survived the crashing plane.

    D. The emergency services arrived in time.

    7. What is the best title for the text?

    A. An Unforgettable Award

    B. A Crashing Plane

    C. A Thrilling Rescue

    D. An Exciting Experience

I found myself dealing with worries right before the new school year started. My neighbor Ollie and I were skateboarding in the park when we happened to see some kids from my school.

I wish summer wasnt ending, said Rose. But at least Ill be in Ms Ramirezs class. My brother had her last year. Shes so nice.

I got Mr Nishimoto, said Jack. Ive heard he brings his guitar and plays funny songs.

Id love to have a singing teacher! I said. I have Ms Newman, and I know nothing about her.

Oh no! said Alex. Im sure shes the one people call the mean, green homework machine.

I dont listen to rumors (谣言). I said with a smile. But part of me thought, What if what Alex said is true? And thats when the worry button got pushed in my brain. And as you know, once the worry button gets pushed, one worry can turn into lots and lots of worries surprisingly quickly.

That night, I had a wild dream. I was searching for my perfect first-day-of-school suit, but a hungry goat got to it first and ate it up. So I was stuck wearing the only thing left in my housea swimsuit.

So how does someone wearing a swimsuit get to school? By swimming, of course. And since swimming through the busy streets of San Francisco isnt easy, I arrived at school really late. By the time I made it to my classroom, it was almost lunchtime.

Youre late! shouted a terrible green monster (怪兽). Now youll have to do ten times as much homework! Every night, forever!

I woke up with my heart racing.

That afternoon, Ollies grandma, Abuela, asked if I was looking forward to school starting.

Um,not exactly. I said. And I started describing my frightening dream. The more I described it, the sillier it sounded. By the end of my story, Ollie, Abuela and I were laughing so hard that we could hardly catch our breath.

    注意续写词数应为150左右。

Abuela said she thought there might be some information about the teachers on our schools website.

Abuela also suggested I make a list of my worries, and that helped too.

    三、

    参考范文:

Imagine this: A big family gets together to have a big dinner when the young just bury themselves in playing with their cell phones, totally ignoring their parents.

There is no doubt that cell phones have a negative effect on our lives. Heavy use of cell phones widens the distance between teenagers and their elders. Worse still, addiction to cell phones will lead to teenagers poor performance at school.

Its time to limit the use of cell phones and communicate with our family members face to face, which helps build a harmonious family atmosphere.

    四、

    参考范文

Abuela said she thought there might be some information about the teachers on our schools website. She suggested I do a little research. On the website, we finally found a picture of Ms Newman, who was actually a smiling human, not a terrible monster. Beside her photo was a description of her hobbies and her pet dog. The minute I learned some facts about my new teacher was the minute my worry button finally switched off.

Abuela also suggested I make a list of my worries, and that helped too. Being able to see my worries on paper made it much easier to talk about them and to plan ahead. I realized I needed to prepare something for my school a few days early. I also made sure I knew exactly when the school bus would arrive, and I printed out a map of the school with directions to my new classroom. And I was sure my school life was going to be just fine once I got used to it.
