Kyle Semrau came home on the morning of April 12 after an overnight shift feeling light-headed. He told his wife he would be laying low for the day, joined by his 6-year-old daughter, Macie.
On a normal day, Macie would have been at school, but that particular morning she had refused to even get dressed for school, so she stayed home. It turns out that her unexplained want to stay home was for the best.
Later in the day. Semrau collapsed from a medical event that caused him to slip in and out of consciousness. Macie learned her dad was in trouble when she heard him yelling. In a moment while Semrau was conscious, Macie asked her dad for his phone passcode so she could unlock the device. She logged in, opened the browser, and phoned the local police department.
Macie relayed the relevant information, including their address, to Judy Smith, the Eliot Police Department’s administrative assistant who answered the phone.
“That’s really lucky,” Semrau told Boston 25 News. “I still have it saved. If you open up my browser, that’s the way it is spelled, ‘Elliot poliz’. She pushed the call button, which actually goes right to the dispatcher (调度员) here in town.”
The police arrived two minutes after Macie called.
Semrau’s medical emergency was due to issues with his sinuses (鼻窦炎), which led to difficulty breathing, according to Seacoast Online. He is now home and doing well.
“If I can say anything about this whole experience, it’s for everyone to teach kids about awareness. If I hadn’t taught my daughter certain things she wouldn’t learn in school, this outcome could have been completely different,” Semrau told Boston. com. “She is, and will always be my hero.”

To effectively interact with humans in crowded social settings, such as malls, hospitals, and other public spaces, robots should be able to actively participate in both group and one-to-one interactions. Most existing robots, however, have been found to perform much better when communicating with individual users than with groups of conversing humans. Hooman Hedayati and Daniel Szafir, two researchers at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have recently developed a new data-driven technique that could improve how robots communicate with groups of humans.
One of the reasons why many robots occasionally misbehave while participating in a group conversation is that their actions heavily rely on data collected by their sensors. Sensors, however, are prone (易于遭受) to errors, and can sometimes be disturbed by sudden movements and obstacles in the robot’s surroundings.
“If the robot’s camera is masked by an obstacle for a second, the robot might not see that person, and as a result, it ignores the user,” Hedayati explained. “Based on my experience, users find these misbehaviors disturbing. The key goal of our recent project was to help robots detect and predict the position of an undetected person within the conversational group.”
The technique developed by Hedayati and Szafir was trained on a series of existing datasets. By analyzing the positions of other speakers in a group, it can accurately predict the position of an undetected user.
In the future, the new approach could help to enhance the conversational abilities of both existing and newly developed robots. This might in turn make them easier to serve in large public spaces, including malls, hospitals, and other public places. “The next step for us will be to improve the gaze behavior of robots in a conversational group. People find robots with a better gaze behavior more intelligent. We want to improve the gaze behavior of robots and make the human-robot conversational group more enjoyable for humans.” Hedayati said.
8. What is the technique developed by Hedayati and Szafir based on?
A. Data. B. Cameras.
C. Existing robots. D. Social settings.
9. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?
A. The working procedure of robots.
B. The ability of robots to communicate.
C. The experience of the researchers.
D. The shortcomings of existing robots.
10. What will happen if a robot’s camera is blocked?
A. It will stop working. B. It will break down.
C. It will abuse its user. D. It will misbehave.
11. What do we know about the new data-driven technique?
A. It is considered a failure. B. It has been used in malls.
C. It gets satisfactory result. D. It only works with new robots.
A 9. D 10. D 11. C

New high-tech shoes and insoles(鞋垫) have been developed that can help elderly, sick and disabled people walk without fear of falling over.
Unveiled at the Wearable Technology Show in London on Tuesday, the Path Feel insoles and Path Finder shoes from U. K. startup Walk With Path provide tactile (触觉的) and visual feedback to assist walking.
“If you walk and you don’t have a good feeling of the ground, you’ve got to be very careful, you keep checking every step, you need to look at the ground and see how you put your leg on the ground,” Iddo Wald, a design engineer at Walk With Path, tells Newsweek. “Path gives the confidence needed to walk without falling.”
“We had a patient who suffers from a spinal cord injury and actually had no feeling of the ground at all but he could feel the vibration. It’s really exciting.” Pressure sensors in the Path Feel insoles provide tactile feedback that shakes the wearer’s feet and informs them when it is touching the ground.
The Path Finder shoes are designed specifically for Parkinson’s patients who can’t walk smoothly. Lasers projected out of the shoes in a green line aim to provide visual clues to help the sufferer focus on putting one foot in front of the other.
According to the National Parkinson Foundation, 38 percent of people with Parkinson’s suffer from falls each year, while Age UK estimates one-in-ten people over the age of 65 fall over. The hope is that both the insoles and the shoes can help bring those numbers down.
Both products are currently in the testing stage, with several London universities conducting trials. Early tests have seen some users improved their walking by over 50 percent.
12. How do the Path Feel insoles work?
A. By shaking the wearer’s feet. B. By giving the wearer sound clues.
C. By recording the wearer’s data. D. By counting the wearer’s steps.
13. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “vibration” in Paragraph 4?
A. Pain. B. Shake. C. Kick. D. Warmth.
14. What do we know about the smart shoes?
A. They are popular among the elderly.
B. They are being further tested.
C. They will replace normal shoes.
D. They can monitor the wearer’s health.
15. What can be the best title of this text?
A. Smart Shoes Have Huge Market Prospects
B. Smart Shoes Help Treat Parkinson’s Disease
C. Smart Shoes Make Walking More Comfortable
D. Smart Shoes Help the Elderly, Sick and Disabled Walk
A 13. B 14. B 15. D

Enhance Your Wellbeing in Nature
Nature reduces our anger, fear, and depression and increases our positive mood and psychological wellbeing. Time in nature also brings us out of ourselves and our narrow concerns and connects us to a larger world where we find beauty and interest. ___16___
It is clear that it is important to get outside! ___17___ But even if you live in an urban area, spend time in your yard or find a park or a green space with trees and bushes. Go outside during your lunch hour if you can to get a “breath of fresh air” and give your mind a break. ___18___
We all know the long list of physical, mental, and emotional benefits of exercise. Exercise improves attention in the young and cognitive functioning in the old. It reduces stress and acts as an antidepressant. ___19___ But much as we know all these benefits, we can’t always motivate ourselves to exercise regularly. This is where nature can help. An appealing place to walk or bike can get us off our seats and moving. And once we start, the beauty of natural surroundings keeps us motivated to continue.
___20___ A series of studies showed that walking in forests, as opposed to urban environments, lowered blood pressure and stress hormones well beyond the time of the walk. So find somewhere with trees, bushes, wild grasses or flowers, water, and other such natural elements and go for a walk or run or bike. Gardening is another wonderful way to be active outside.
A. If you can get to the country, or a lake, that’s wonderful.
B. Exercise is also the key if we want to avoid gaining weight.
C. So find somewhere with trees or bushes to go for a walk.
D. The beauty of natural surroundings can keep us motivated.
E. Thus the environment is connected to our overall wellbeing.
F. You should find more energy for your afternoon mental tasks.
G. Moreover exercising outdoors reduces stress even more than exercise indoors.
E 17. A 18. F 19. B 20. G
根据上文“Nature reduces our anger, fear, and depression and increases our positive mood and psychological wellbeing. Time in nature also brings us out of ourselves and our narrow concerns and connects us to a larger world where we find beauty and interest.(大自然减少了我们的愤怒、恐惧和沮丧,增加了我们的积极情绪和心理健康。大自然中的时间也带我们走出自我和狭隘的关注,将我们连接到一个更大的世界,在那里我们可以发现美和兴趣)”可知, 本段主要讲述大自然对我们心理和情绪的影响,可以开阔我们的视野,空处为段尾句,对本段有总结和归纳的作用。所以E选项(因此,环境与我们的整体健康息息相关)符合语境。故选E。
【17题详解】
根据下文“But even if you live in an urban area, spend time in your yard or find a park or a green space with trees and bushes.( 但即使你住在城市地区,花时间在你的院子里,或找一个公园或有树木和灌木的绿地)”可知,此处应指与城市对应的地方,那就是乡下。 故选A。
由上文“Go outside during your lunch hour if you can to get a “breath of fresh air” and give your mind a break. (如果可以的话,在午餐时间到外面去“呼吸一下新鲜空气”,让你的大脑休息一下)” 可知,午餐时间可到大自然中呼吸新鲜空气,让大脑休息一下。F选项(你应该为下午的脑力工作找到更多的能量)与上句衔接密切,符合语境。故选F。
【19题详解】
根据上文“We all know the long list of physical, mental, and emotional benefits of exercise. Exercise improves attention in the young and cognitive functioning in the old. It reduces stress and acts as an antidepressant.( 我们都知道锻炼对身体、心理和情感有很多好处。锻炼可以提高年轻人的注意力和老年人的认知能力。它可以减轻压力,起到抗抑郁的作用)”提到锻炼对精神方面的好处,下文提到“all these benefits”,所以本句仍为锻炼的好处。B选项(如果我们想避免增重,锻炼也是关键)符合语境。故选B。
【20题详解】
空处为段首主题句。根据下文“A series of studies showed that walking in forests, as opposed to urban environments, lowered blood pressure and stress hormones well beyond the time of the walk.( 一系列的研究表明,与城市环境相反,在森林中散步,降低血压和压力荷尔蒙的时间远远超过散步的时间)”主要讲述到室外锻炼比在室内锻炼要好。

When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.
The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word “stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.
In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.
One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.
Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class’s reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Mrs Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award. With this kind teacher cheering her on, she gained confidence and language skills. She made so rapid progress that by mid-year, she was well on her way to speaking English fluently and had a good grasp of reading. Besides, she did well in all the other subjects. She came to school early every day, participated actively in class activities and finished homework on time. What’s more, she made more and more friends in her class.
The award ceremony was coming up. She worked as hard as she could. When Mrs Collins announced Gloria as the winner in front of the whole class, it was her proudest moment. She immediately took the reading award right out of that boy’s hot little hands. The boy was shocked and unwillingly handed it to her. She felt so happy for herself, owing her success to her teacher, Mrs Collins. This served as a motivation for Gloria who worked even harder in school and earned more “A” grades.
