Back in 1859,an Englishman,Thomas Austin, brought 24 rabbits to Australia’s eastern state of Victoria.Never before had there been any rabbits on the Australian continent.Austin and other homesick English settlers thought rabbits would remind them of the green fields of home. They also felt the creatures would provide them with game to hunt.
However, the rabbits spread through Victoria,New South Wales, southern Queensland, and South Australia in no time.Worse, the animals had begun moving west. These little creatures easily went through pastures and crops, and destroyed almost everything in their path. They evicted wallabies(a kind of Australian animal) and other now-endangered animals, moving in and taking over their homes. The rabbits just chose to eat certain grasses and small bushes, which completely changed the local ecosystem. In times of drought, the rabbits dug deep into the ground to find small amounts of water in the roots of plants. As the vegetation cover was destroyed, erosion became a serious problem.By 1894 the threat had reached Western Australia’s border.
In the end, a decision was made to build a rabbit-proof fence that would cross the continent from north to south. In late 1901, the construction of the Number 1 Rabbit-proof Fence began. The project required 400 camels, 150 horses, 50 donkeys, and 4 teams of oxen.Posts made of bushes were driven into the ground every twelve feet.Wire netting that reached out three and a half feet above the ground and one foot into the ground was fixed between the posts.
By 1907 the rabbit-proof fence was completed.A second and third fence line had been added when rabbits were found west of the original fence. With the Number 2 and Number 3 fences, Australia was totally divided by 2023 miles of netting. In 1907 the three parts of the rabbit-proof fence made up the longest fence in the world. No one could have imagined the consequences of Thomas Austin’s decision to bring rabbits to Australia in 1859.Who could have known what it would take to contain 24 rabbits?
4.According to the text, Thomas Austin .
A.was the designer of the rabbit-proof fence
B.moved to Australia in the early 19th century
C.lived in eastern state of Victoria all his life
D.brought rabbits to Australia to avoid loneliness
5.The underlined word “evicted” in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “ ”.
A.admired B.removed
C.controlled D.protected
6.The animals mentioned in Paragraph 3 imply that .
A.many animals could be seen in Australia
B.it was hard to find food for these animals
C.building the fence was extremely difficult
D.the project was a waste of time and effort
7.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Australia’s Rabbit-proof Fences
B.How to Make a Rabbit-proof Fence
C.Rabbits—the Perfect Pet for Children
D.Thomas Austin—a Smart Rabbit Keeper
根据第一段中“Back in 1859, an Englishman, Thomas Austin, brought 24 rabbits to Australia’s eastern state of Victoria.Never before had there been any rabbits on the Australian continent.Austin and other homesick English settlers thought rabbits would remind them of the green fields of home.”
根据画线词上文“These little creatures easily went through pastures and crops, and destroyed almost everything in their path.”以及后文“and other now-endangered animals, moving in and taking over their homes”可推知,画线部分所在句子意为“它们把小袋鼠和其他濒危动物赶走了”,故画线词意思为“赶走”。
根据第三段中“In the end, a decision was made to build a rabbit-proof fence that would cross the continent from north to south. In late 1901, the construction of the Number 1 Rabbit-proof Fence began. The project required 400 camels, 150 horses, 50 donkeys, and 4 teams of oxen.Posts made of bushes were driven into the ground every twelve feet.Wire netting that reached out three and a half feet above the ground and one foot into the ground was fixed between the posts.”
根据最后一段中“By 1907 the rabbit-proof fence was completed.A second and third fence line had been added when rabbits were found west of the original fence. With the Number 2 and Number 3 fences, Australia was totally divided by 2023 miles of netting. In 1907 the three parts of the rabbit-proof fence made up the longest fence in the world.” 故选A。

(Text 2)
W:Sir,we don’t seem to have a reservation for you.I’m sorry.
M:But my secretary said that she had reserved a room for me here.I phoned her from the airport this morning just before I boarded my plane.
(Text 3)
W:I will never go anywhere with Bill ever again. He can never remember where he parks his car.
M:That certainly sounds like Bill.
(Text 4)
M:How much are these T-shirts?Are they also on sale?
W:Yes,they are usually $30 each, but they are on sale now and you can get 30% off.
(Text 5)
M:Jenny!I wasn’t expecting you at this time.I thought you weren’t getting to the party until after 7:00.
W:Yeah,I didn’t have to work overtime tonight. My boss actually let me off when he said he would.Who could have guessed?
第二节
(Text 6)
M:Good afternoon.I’m calling because I really need some help.I was moving furniture the other day and I hurt my shoulder.I feel pain when I move my arm backwards. It has been like this for several days already.I took some medicine already, but that didn’t help.I think I need to see a doctor.
W:That’s too bad.You said it’s a shoulder problem,right?
M:Yes,that’s it.I also have a little back pain sometimes.I am not worried about that.
W:OK,would tomorrow morning or afternoon work better for you?We have openings at 9:00 a.m.,11:00 a.m.,and 4:00 p.m.
M:The earlier,the better.
(Text 7)
M:What did you think about the guest speaker today?
W:He was great.I am glad we had the chance to learn something fresh and exciting today.
M:I still think last week’s speaker was better. That scientist really opened my eyes to climate change.
W:Well,I guess it depends on what you’re interested in.I’m taking computer science,so it is very useful to me.You probably just didn’t understand what he was talking about.
M:Actually,I did.But after a while,I lost interest.I kept looking at my watch to see how much time was left.Who is coming next week?
W:I heard it’s some guy who came up with an idea for solar-powered products. The week after that,we’ll get a visit from a famous basketball player.
M:That’s more like it!

W:Do you have something specific in mind?
M:I don’t know.She’s very particular.Any suggestions?
W:We have some new woolen sweaters that just arrived.
M:Oh,that might be just the thing. My wife just loves soft sweaters, and she’s always liked that material for that exact reason.Do you have anything in blue?
W:Unfortunately,we only have these sweaters in black and light brown. We do have some woolen scarves and gloves in different colors.Let me see if we have one in blue.
M:Great.Thanks.
W:I found a blue scarf here. What do you think?
M:It looks perfect.I’ll take it.
(Text 9)
W:Billy,we need to talk.I noticed you haven’t been paying as much attention as usual in class lately.Your writing has gotten worse, too. What’s going on?
M:Oh,it’s nothing.
W:Nothing?Billy,I know you too well for that. So,what’s really going on?
M:All right.I heard my parents talking recently. They thought I was asleep, but I wasn’t.They were talking about moving because of my father’s work. The company wants him to manage an office in another city. So,I’ve been worried about that.I don’t want to have to start over in another place with a new school, new friends, and new teachers.
W:I understand.
M:I guess I just feel anxious about what might happen.I haven’t talked with my parents yet,but I don’t know why.
W:Well,I can see how that could be a cause for concern. You are clever, friendly, and hard-working when you put your mind to it.You will have nothing to worry about if you do move to a new school. And if you stay, you need to keep your grades up.Look, whatever happens,I’m sure that you will be just fine.
M:I hope so.
W:But for now,if I were you,I would have an honest conversation with my parents. Also,I want you to know that you can talk with me more about this when you need to.

Throughout history,a great number of inventions were made by accident. One delicious example of this is potato chips.Have you ever stopped to wonder about the history of these tasty treats? The year is 1853,and at a restaurant in Saratoga,New York, the USA,a customer who was unsatisfied with his thick-cut French fries sent them back to the kitchen. The chef,George Crum, made a new plate of thinner fries. The customer sent them back a second time, complaining they were still too thick. The chef, annoyed by the customer’s demands, made a new plate of fries that were too thin to eat with a fork.He was certain that the customer would not like these extra thin fries. However,to the chef’s surprise, the customer was delighted! And so,potato chips were born.George called these Saratoga chips. He started packaging the chips and selling them in shops throughout New York State. He later opened his own restaurant.Eventually, potato chips became a popular snack in other parts of America. The next time you have some, you can thank a particular customer and an angry chef for this delicious invention.

Everybody hates it,but everybody does it.A recent report said that 40% of Americans hate tipping. In America alone, tipping is a $16 billion-a-year industry.Consumers acting politely ought not to pay more than they have to for a given service.Tips should not exist. So why do they? The common opinion in the past was that tips both rewarded the efforts of good service and reduced uncomfortable feelings of inequality. And also, tipping makes for closer relations. It went without saying that the better the service, the bigger the tip.
But according to a new research from Cornell University, tips no longer serve any useful function. The paper analyzes numbers they got from 2,547 groups dining at 20 different restaurants. The connection between larger tips and better service was very weak.Only a tiny part of the size of the tip had anything to do with the quality of service.
Tipping is better explained by culture than by the money people spend. In America, the custom came into being a long time ago.It is regarded as part of the accepted cost of a service. In New York restaurants, failing to tip at least 15% could well mean dissatisfaction from the customers.Hairdressers can expect to get 15%-20%,and the man who delivers your fast food $2.In Europe, tipping is less common. In many restaurants the amount of tip is decided by a standard service charge. In many Asian countries, tipping has never really caught on at all.Only a few have really taken to tipping.
According to Michael Lynn, the Cornell papers’ author, countries in which people are more social or outgoing tend to tip more.Tipping may reduce anxiety about being served by strangers. And Mr.Lynn says,“In America, where people are expressive and eager to mix up with others, tipping is about social approval. If you tip badly, people think less of you.”
24.Which of the following best explains the underlined phrase “caught on”?
A.Become popular. B.Been hated.
C.Been stopped. D.Been permitted.
25.Among the following situations,in your opinion, who is likely to tip most?

B.An American just had a wonderful dinner in a well-known restaurant in New York.
C.A Japanese businessman asked for a pizza delivery from a Pizza Hut in New York.
D.A Chinese student enjoyed his meal in a famous fast food restaurant in New York.
26.We can infer from this passage that .
A.tipping is no longer a good way to satisfy some customers themselves
B.tipping is especially popular in New York
C.tipping in America can make service better now
D.tipping has something to do with people’s character
27.This passage is mainly about .

On a farm in England, Gavin and Alice Munro are taking sustainability (持续性) to the next level: they harvest trees which they grow into chairs.
The couple have a furniture (家具) farm in Derbyshire where they are growing 250 chairs and 50 tables. It is their answer to what they see as the inefficient (效率低的) process of cutting down mature trees to create furniture.
“Instead of growing a tree for 50 years and then cutting it down and making it into smaller and smaller bits ...the idea is to grow the tree into the shape that you want directly. It’s like a kind of 3D printing,” said Gavin.
Part of the inspiration for the idea came when Gavin was a young boy.He found an overgrown bonsai tree (盆景树) which looked like a chair.
The 44-year-old man began experiment in 2006.In 2012, Gavin and Alice set up the company Full Grown.Within several years, the couple developed the most effective way to shape a tree without limiting its growth. They guide shoots (新枝) heading in the right direction, rather than forcing them the wrong way against their natural growth.
The average chair takes six to nine years to grow and another year to dry out.The labor and time involved in producing the organic pieces mean they do not come cheap.Chairs sell for £10,000 each and tables for£2,500 to £12,500.
28.What is special about the farm?
A.3D printing is used.
B.Bonsai trees grow there.
C.It was set up by a couple.
D.Trees can grow into furniture.
29.How do the couple shape a tree?
A.By limiting its growth.
B.By following its natural growth.
C.By forcing it against its natural growth.
D.By guiding its shoots in the right direction.
30.How long does it take to make an average chair for the company?
A.Over 50 years. B.6 to 9 years.
C.6 years at most. D.7 to 10 years.
31.What does the writer’s opinion on the farm?
A.It has brought in huge amounts of money.
B.Trees grow there inefficiently.
C.It’s a good try of sustainability.
D.It will gain popularity soon.

In the past 50 years, the amount of water in the open ocean with zero oxygen has gone up more than fourfold in coastal water bodies, including river mouths and seas,low-oxygen sites have increased more than tenfold since 1950.Scientists expect oxygen to continue dropping even outside these zones as Earth warms.
“Oxygen is fundamental to life in the Oceans,” said Denise Breitburg,a marine ecologist with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.“The decline in ocean oxygen ranks among the most serious effects of human activities on the Earth ’s environment.Actually,it’s a great loss to all the support services that rely on recreation and tourism, including hotels and restaurants and taxi drivers and everything else. The reverberations(严重影响) of unhealthy ecosystems in the ocean can be extensive.”
In areas traditionally called “dead zones”,like those in Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, oxygen plummets(大幅下跌) to so low levels that many animals die.As fish avoid these zones, their habitats become smaller and they’ re easier to be attacked or caught. But the problem goes far beyond “dead zones”.Even smaller oxygen decline can prevent growth in animals, hinder reproduction and lead to disease or even death. It also can cause the release of dangerous chemicals such as nitrous oxide,a greenhouse gas up to 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. While some animals can boom in “dead zones”,overall biodiversity falls.
Climate change is the key criminal in the open ocean.Warming surface waters make it harder for oxygen to reach the inside of the ocean.Furthermore,as the ocean as a whole gets warmer,it holds less oxygen. In coastal waters, too much nutrient pollution from land creates algal blooms, which use up oxygen as they die and break down.
People’s livelihoods are also on the line, the scientists reported, especially in developing nations.Smaller fisheries(渔场)may be unable to relocate when low oxygen destroys their harvests or forces fish to move elsewhere. So we humans have to carry on a war now and win the war.
32.What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The ocean has been losing its oxygen.
B.The amount of sea water is increasing.
C.The coastal water bodies are dangerous.
D.The Earth becomes warmer and warmer.
33.What can we infer from Denise Breitburg’s words?
A.Different oceans have different levels of oxygen.
B.The decline in ocean oxygen has great influences.
C.The future of tourism relies on the levels of ocean oxygen.
D.The decrease in ocean oxygen is the most serious environment problem.
34.How does the “dead zone” affect sea animals?
A.It offers more food.
B.It forms dangerous gas.
C.It reduces their living areas.
D.It produces more carbon dioxide.
35.How can we win the war according to the text?
A.By closing smaller fisheries.
B.By controlling human’s bad activities.
C.By improving people’s living standards.
D.By stopping nutrients entering the ocean.

固定搭配:not only...but also...“不但……而且……”。故填but。
固定短语:be known as“作为……
介词like “像……一样”,故填like。
65.especially 考查副词。此处用副词修饰后面的整个句子,故填especially。

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part.He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived.Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache.Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her.Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Filled with pleasure, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news.“Zahra, see what I have got for you.” Ali said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali.“Thank you!
