We all know that exercise is good for your health, but some kinds of exercise may be better than others.
Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems.Running may also help you live longer.Researchers say it is not important how far you run.It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run.
Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults.About one-fourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were considerably less likely than non-runners to die of any form of disease, including heart disease. In fact, the runners usually lived three years longer than the non-runners.
This study lasted 15 years.During that time, more than 3,400 of the individuals died.About 1,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease,a heart attack or a stroke.Compared to non-runners,runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes. Also, runners compared to non-runners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
The runners in the study ran between 10 and 16 kilometres per hour.Slower runners, and those who only ran once or twice a week, were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further.Researchers looked at the running over time and found that persistent runners—over six years—showed the biggest benefits.
To stay healthy, doctors suggest that adults up to age 65 do 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) exercise every week. They say these individuals need 75 minutes of energetic exercise, like running, every week for good health.

Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less.He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men.He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65.The men reported about what diseases they had,or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk.Mr Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day.James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. He suggests working while standing at a high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk.Dr Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating.Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. And he notes that if you spend more time on your feet, you may have muscle activity that helps burn fats and sugars in your body.

(Text 1)
M:When did you learn to draw like that?Did you take lessons when you were a kid?
W:No,I learned it in college during the summer.I thought about taking an art class in high school, but at the time I was too busy to handle many lessons.
(Text 2)
W:Sir,we don’t seem to have a reservation for you.I’m sorry.
M:But my secretary said that she had reserved a room for me here.I phoned her from the airport this morning just before I boarded my plane.
(Text 3)
W:I will never go anywhere with Bill ever again. He can never remember where he parks his car.
M:That certainly sounds like Bill.
(Text 4)
M:How much are these T-shirts?Are they also on sale?
W:Yes,they are usually $30 each, but they are on sale now and you can get 30% off.
(Text 5)
M:Jenny!I wasn’t expecting you at this time.I thought you weren’t getting to the party until after 7:00.
W:Yeah,I didn’t have to work overtime tonight. My boss actually let me off when he said he would.Who could have guessed?
第二节
(Text 6)
M:Good afternoon.I’m calling because I really need some help.I was moving furniture the other day and I hurt my shoulder.I feel pain when I move my arm backwards. It has been like this for several days already.I took some medicine already, but that didn’t help.I think I need to see a doctor.
W:That’s too bad.You said it’s a shoulder problem,right?
M:Yes,that’s it.I also have a little back pain sometimes.I am not worried about that.
W:OK,would tomorrow morning or afternoon work better for you?We have openings at 9:00 am,11:00 am,and 4:00 pm.
M:The earlier,the better.
(Text 7)
M:What did you think about the guest speaker today?
W:He was great.I am glad we had the chance to learn something fresh and exciting today.
M:I still think last week’s speaker was better. That scientist really opened my eyes to climate change.
W:Well,I guess it depends on what you’re interested in.I’m taking computer science,so it is very useful to me.You probably just didn’t understand what he was talking about.
M:Actually,I did.But after a while,I lost interest.I kept looking at my watch to see how much time was left.Who is coming next week?
W:I heard it’s some guy who came up with an idea for solar-powered products. The week after that,we’ll get a visit from a famous basketball player.
M:That’s more like it!
(Text 8)
W:Welcome to Joan’s department store.Can I help you?
M:Yes,I’m looking for a birthday present for my wife.
W:Do you have something specific in mind?
M:I don’t know.She’s very particular. Any suggestions?
W:We have some new woollen sweaters that just arrived.
M:Oh,that might be just the thing. My wife just loves soft sweaters, and she’s always liked that material for that exact reason.Do you have anything in blue?
W:Unfortunately,we only have these sweaters in black and light brown. We do have some woollen scarves and gloves in different colours.Let me see if we have one in blue.
M:Great.Thanks.
W:I found a blue scarf here. What do you think?
M:It looks perfect.I’ll take it.
(Text 9)
W:Billy,we need to talk.I noticed you haven’t been paying as much attention as usual in class lately.Your writing has gotten worse, too. What’s going on?
M:Oh,it’s nothing.
W:Nothing?Billy,I know you too well for that. So,what’s really going on?
M:All right.I heard my parents talking recently.They thought I was asleep,but I
wasn’t.They were talking about moving because of my father’s work. The company wants him to manage an office in another city. So,I’ve been worried about that.I
don’t want to have to start over in another place with a new school, new friends, and new teachers.
W:I understand.
M:I guess I just feel anxious about what might happen.I haven’t talked with my parents yet,but I don’t know why.
W:Well,I can see how that could be a cause for concern. You are clever, friendly, and hard-working when you put your mind to it.You will have nothing to worry about if you do move to a new school. And if you stay, you need to keep your grades up.Look, whatever happens,I’m sure that you will be just fine.
M:I hope so.
W:But for now,if I were you,I would have an honest conversation with my parents. Also,I want you to know that you can talk with me more about this when you need to.

Throughout history,a great number of inventions were made by accident. One delicious example of this is potato chips.Have you ever stopped to wonder about the history of these tasty treats? The year is 1853,and at a restaurant in Saratoga,New York, the USA,a customer who was unsatisfied with his thick-cut French fries sent them back to the kitchen. The chef,George Crum, made a new plate of thinner fries. The customer sent them back a second time, complaining they were still too thick. The chef, annoyed by the customer’s demands, made a new plate of fries that were too thin to eat with a fork.He was certain that the customer would not like these extra thin fries. However,to the chef’s surprise, the customer was delighted! And so,potato chips were born.George called these Saratoga chips. He started packaging the chips and selling them in shops throughout New York State. He later opened his own restaurant.Eventually, potato chips became a popular snack in other parts of America. The next time you have some, you can thank a particular customer and an angry chef for this delicious invention.

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn’t do either well.He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic”stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realised running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon,I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3,I passed a sign:“GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!”
By mile 17,I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21,I was starving!
As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact,I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels,I can now call myself a“marathon winner”.

根据第二段最后两句“I didn’t do...I was ‘not athletic’.”
根据倒数第二段中的“I was one of the final runners to finish.But I finished!” 这与选项A中的“made it”意思相吻合。故选A。
C
Why play games?Because they are fun,and a lot more besides.Following the rules, planning your next move and acting as a team member are all“game”ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek.Such games are entertaining and fun.But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating.
Many children’s games have a practical side.Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups.For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all,the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition.People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it.For countries experiencing natural disasters or wars,an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people.Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.People on all continents play it — some for fun and some for a living.Nicolette Iribarne,a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favourite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it,what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.
28.What are children expected to do through playing hide-and-seek?
A.To be a team leader.
B.To obey the basic rules.
C.To act as a grown-up.
D.To predict possible danger.
29.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Games can describe life in an exciting way.
B.Games can turn real-life experiences into a play.
C.Games can make learning life skills more interesting.
D.Games can change people’s views of sporting events.
30.According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?
A.It inspires people’s deep love for the country.
B.It proves the exceptional skills of the winners.
C.It helps the country out of natural disasters.
D.It earns the winners fame and fortune.
31.What’s Iribarne’s goal of forming the foundation?
A.Bringing fun to poor kids.
B.Providing soccer balls for children.
C.Giving poor kids a chance for a better life.
D.Attracting soccer players to help poor kids.

画线部分前面的谓语动词是translate,有“翻译,解释,转移,调动”的意思,该部分后面有一个定语从句“that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to...lives,such as taking turns and cooperating”前后结合就可以理解这部分的意思——他们把生活变成激动人心的戏剧,由此可知,此处与C项“游戏可以让学习生活技能更有趣”意思相近。
根据文章第四段第三句“People who...earned it.” 故选A。

Did you know that the color of uniforms can influence the performance of an athlete? It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true.
Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue uniform. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, colour had no influence on the result. But if it was a close match, the athlete in a red uniform was more likely to win. Then they looked at the uniforms of the soccer teams at the Euro 2004 tournament.Again, teams wearing red won more games.
The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male shows red on its body,it sends a signal of its power and strength. For example,in many kinds of monkeys, the more the male shows off its red scars, the more females it can attract.
Based on this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too.According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red uniform,he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him.And that kind of feeling may have a bad influence on the player’s performance in the actual game.
Although the idea is interesting, most people don’t accept that colour signals in the animal’s world can really be useful to humans’ in sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples.Much more research has to be done to prove the influence of uniform colours on the performance of athletes.
32.What did the scientists find out about the 2004 Athens Olympic Games?
A.Athletes played equally well in four sports.
B.Game results had a big influence on the athletes.
C.Athletes dressed in red scored more in a close match.
D.There was a big difference in read and blue team’s scores.
33.What may the red scars of a male animal suggest?
A.It is quite strong.
B.It is a failure.
C.It has power over other males.
D.It has attracted a lot of females.
34.The underlined part “that kind of feeling” in the text refers to a feeling of .
A.weakness B.pride
C.danger D.shame
35.What is most people’s opinion to the scientists’ idea?
A.Interested. B.Satisfied.
C.Doubtful. D.Thankful.
Until two weeks ago, sixth graders could be found playing football.Recess (课间休息) was a time to play, learn, and exercise. Then, football was banned for being “too dangerous”.Now you’ll find us lying on the grass and wishing for something to fill our time with.
Football is a good source of exercise. The TIME for Kids article,“Fighting Fat in Kids”,talks about different ways to fight obesity (肥胖).36. We need football so we don’t grow up to be unhealthy and get diseases like diabetes or heart disease.
37. With big teams it doesn’t leave anyone out like other games. Just picture it:every child in sixth grade can be invited to play together! Whether you are a great player or a beginner, there is always a place for you on the team!
Some people think football is only for boys.38. Out of 25 kids, including boys and girls, all will say they want to play football.Even my mum and sister love to play. This shows that football is a valuable part of recess and should not be banned.
Football helps us learn important things.39. Sometimes during the game both teams argue because they think they should get the point. This gives kids a chance to work out their problems on their own and make a solution.
Please allow football again at recess.40. We will get more exercise,we will enhance the friendship with classmates, and we will learn important skills. These are lessons we need, and as long as we are careful,we can be safe. Please take the football ban away and let us play again.

根据上文“The TIME for Kids article,‘Fighting Fat in Kids’,talks about different ways to fight obesity(肥胖).”
根据后文“With big teams it doesn’t leave anyone out like other games. Just picture it:Every child in sixth grade can be invited to play together!”
根据后文“Out of 25 kids, including boys and girls, all will say they want to play football.”
根据后文“This gives kids a chance to work out their problems on their own and make a solution.”
根据下文“We will get more exercise...and we will learn important skills.” B选项中的We will和该空后的三个We will形成排比句式。

It seemed like a bad dream.
John woke up in a hospital room.He was frightened to death. He realised that he couldn’t move both of his legs.At that time, the doctor came in.When the doctor told him that both his legs were broken and he had to sit in the wheelchair for the time being,he knew his college basketball dream was over.He was really depressed.John followed what the doctors had told him,but it did not work entirely. When he left hospital,John was sent to a health recovery centre. He never heard of this centre before, but it was not far away from his house.Although he felt unwilling to go there,he had no choice but to accept the fact.
A week later,he arrived there unhappily. The first person he met was Sunny Chen, who was so kind and friendly that he warmly welcomed John to go there.
Sunny’s legs were badly hurt in a skating accident. He told John that he would help him recover soon.Though Sunny couldn’t move his legs,he became the coach of a basketball team called the Suns. After a period of recovery training,John felt his legs were all right. So Sunny invited him to join the game. Sunny guided the team on his wheelchair.John played badly, but for the first time since the accident,he stopped feeling sorry for himself.

Sunny saw all John did, lost in thought. He could not help praising John for his courage and love for basketball. There were many ups and downs in life.No one knew what would happen. However,as long as there was love and hope in our heart, nothing could stop us from achieving what we desired. As a matter of fact, what we should do was to hold fast to the dreams and fight to the end.
