A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.On her first day in Micronesia, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had actually raised her eyebrows(眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. Then he was aware that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish(中国式英语).Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was very surprised and I thought her words were unbelievable. So I did a search on Google. To my surprise, there were over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar has an error and needs to be corrected.Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood movie makers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective(侦探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius(孔子). “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies. Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot. You can have some examples from other countries such as pizza from Italian and sushi from Japanese. There is a long list! Since more and more Americans admire Chinese culture nowadays, I firmly believe that more Chinese words will become American English in the future. Dont be sad or feel disappointed if you make mistakes; its part of the process of improving your speaking. 2 . As Albert Einstein said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”  3 . Once you have started speaking English, don’t be afraid to ask people questions about how to say or pronounce something. Most of the time people will be more than happy to help you if you have any questions.Don’t be shy!One of non-native speakers problems is being too shy to speak. 4 . Be aware that most people speak more than one language and know how difficult it is to learn a new one.
