Dear Editor,
Please publish more articles about women scientists. Women scientists have made outstanding contributions to the world. These women make excellent role models. More young women may choose science as a profession if women read featured articles on female scientists like Marie Curie and Rachel Carson. Both women were encouraged to study science, and they both accomplished great things.
With her father's encouragement, Marie Curie made the world a better place through her scientific accomplishments. She studied the emission (放射) of rays from uranium (铀), a feature she called “radioactivity (放射性)”. Later, Curie and her husband, also a scientist, processed the mineral pitchblende before separating two radioactive elements (元素). With this discovery, Marie Curie earned her doctorate, and shortly thereafter, both she and her husband were awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics. In 1911 Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for her work with the newly discovered elements;this work laid the foundation for Xrays and atomic physics.
When Rachel Carson was young, her mother encouraged her to study nature. As an adult, she became known as the mother of the modern environmental movement. After studying marine biology and zoology in college, Carson worked as a government scientist and wrote several books on how all living things relate to each other. In 1951 her book The Sea Around Us made scientific knowledge about the sea accessible to the general readers and remained on the bestseller list for eightysix weeks. In 1962 Carson wrote Silent Spring, a book that helped lead to improvements in the use of chemical pesticides(农药).
Humans have benefited greatly from the work of Marie Curie and Rachel Carson. What if these women had not been encouraged to become scientists? I believe that we need to encourage young women to enter the field of science. With that goal in mind,I sincerely hope your magazine can publish more articles about the contributions that women make to science.
Sincerely,
Annie Bastien,Grade 7

Four teenage girls from Minnesota, US. 120 hours of non-stop togetherness. No cellphones. This is not a reality show, but an adventure journey.
"It was really perfect," said Julia Ruelle of her recent adventure to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with three of her childhood friends. "By unplugging, we had an amazing time."
Last year, the 16-year-old took part in an essay contest and carried off a prize. The award was a 5-day canoe and camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. So Julia invited her friends Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson and Julianna Torelli.
The four Minnetonka High School juniors arrived in Ely for training the day before they began the journey. They set out the next day at 7 a. m., quickly developing a routine.
"We were done paddling by noon," Julia said. "We ate lunch at the campsite and then it was time for hammocks (吊床), reading, making friendship bracelets (手镯)and talking."
The girls all had some experience in the outdoors before.
Anna had been to the Boundary Waters with her family. "I love how you are separated from everything in your life, especially technology," Anna said. Without her phone, she said, "I'm less worried about things." Madeline, too, had been to the Boundary Waters a few years back. "But this time, I had to paddle right and set up camp," she said. The girls made fire and cooked meal together. No one was ever hungry or homesick, but they were nervous the final night as they waited out a thunderstorm. They left wet sleeping bags in one tent, and squeezed into another for the night. "Every thunderstorm in the Boundary Waters feels huge," Julia said.
On the car ride home, they were all on their phones catching up with friends. "It was a little at a loss turning my phone on, said Anna. "Mental health can be improved so much in the Boundary Waters. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself."
4.How did Julia Ruelle get the chance to camp?
A.She won an essay contest. B.She was invited by her friends.
C.She performed well in her school. D.She asked her parents for support.
5.Why was the 5-day adventure unique to the girls?
A.They needed to complete many tasks. B.They needed to find a guide on their own.
C.They had to live on a boat for several days. D.They had to live without their smartphones.
6.What can we know about the girls from the story?
A.They had not got any camping experience before.
B.They all felt refreshed after the adventure journey.
C.They enriched their learning experience by exploring.
D.They used to keep in close touch with their friends by phone.
7.What did the girls do when they were going home?
A.They played games on the phone. B.They phoned their friends.
C.They reflected on their experiences. D.They didn't know what to tell their friends.
答案:4-7.ADBB
解析:
Last year, the 16-year-old took part in an essay contest and carried off a prize. The award was a 5-day canoe and camping adventure with up to three friends."
No cellphones. This is not a reality show, but an adventure journey." Without her phone, she said, 'I'm less worried about things.'"
Mental health can be improved so much in the Boundary Waters. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself.'"
On the car ride home, they were all on their phones catching up with friends."

Droughts(干旱) caused by global climate change have led to a drop in wheat production, a worldwide shortage and high food prices around the world. The global wheat supply is at its lowest point in 50 years, with only an estimated 10 weeks of supply left. This has been one factor pushing the prices of bread, beer and other wheatcontaining foods steadily higher. According to Hilton Dinner, a bakery owner from Edmonton, Canada, the price of flour has more than doubled over the past eight months. In 19 years of business, Dinner said,he has never seen prices rise like this.
“Prices creep up seasonably, ” he said. “They might go up 10 percent, then down 5 percent. They never go back to where they started, but they creep. This is not creeping, this is drastic. ”
Also to blame for the global wheat shortage is the rising population, coupled with increasing meat consumption worldwide. This has led to the increasing diversion of grain to animal feed.
Analysts anticipate that the shortage may be resolved within 12 months, as farmers pull fallow land into wheat production. But even when the shortage resolves, food prices are only expected to keep climbing due to other factors, such as high energy and shipping costs.
“It’s not something that’s going to go away, ” Dinner said. “Food in general is going to go up. As wheat goes up,so does the price of eggs and chicken because they eat grainbased feed. It affects people who can’t afford to pay more for their food. ”
Public health experts have expressed concern about the effect that rising food prices have on the poor. The United Nations recently reported that in 2007, the cost of food imports in the world’s neediest countries increased 24 percent, to a total of $107 billion.
8.The indirect reason for a drop in wheat production is ________.
A.the drought B.the global climate change
C.the shipping cost D.the rising population
9.According to the first paragraph, the prices of wheat products rise ________.
A.suddenly B.gradually
C.slowly D.rapidly
10.The wheat shortage may disappear if ________.
A.the empty lands are used to plant wheat
B.the shipping costs are falling down
C.chickens don’t feed on wheat any more
D.beer isn’t made from wheat any more
11.The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A.poor people can’t afford food
B.the rising population leads to high food prices
C.the global climate change causes wheat shortage
D.food prices are going to go down
根据第一段第一句 “Droughts(干旱)caused by global climate change have led to a drop in wheat production, a worldwide shortage and high food prices around the world. ”可知,全球气候变化引起的干旱已经导致小麦产量下降,全球短缺和世界各地的粮食价格高涨。
9.D 推理判断题。根据第一段特别是 “the price of flour has more than doubled over the past eight months”可知,小麦产品的价格上涨非常快。
根据第四段第一句 “Analysts anticipate that the shortage may be resolved within 12 months,as farmers pull fallow land into wheat production. ”可知,答案为A项。
11.C 主旨大意题。本文讲述的是因为气候的变化引起小麦的短缺。故C为文章的主旨大意。
D
The sea is home to billions of plants and animals. Many live only near the sunlit surface. Oceanographers classify marine living beings by separating them into two main groups:plants and animals.
There are two general types of plants found in the ocean, those having roots that are attached to the ocean bottom and those not having roots which simply drift about with the water. The rooted plants in the ocean are only found in shallow water because there is not enough sunlight to sustain photosynthesis(光合作用) in deeper waters. Since sunlight does not pass more than a few hundred feet into the ocean, most of the ocean is not capable of supporting rooted plants.
The most plenty plants in the ocean are known as phytoplankton(浮游生物).These are usually singlecelled, minute floating plants that drift throughout the surface waters of the ocean. To grow, phytoplankton need nutrients from the sea water and lots of sunlight.
Marine animals are divided into three groups:zooplankton, nekton, and benthos. Zooplankton are drifting animals and are usually small, however, they can grow to fairly large size. For example, the jellyfish and the Portuguese manofwar are examples of larger types of zooplankton which are unable to propel(推进) themselves effectively.
Nekton are the free swimmers and probably the largest portion of familiar animals found in the ocean belong to this class. Common fishes, the octopus, whales, eels and squid are all examples of nekton.
The third type of sea animals spends its entire life on or in the ocean bottom. This group of marine animals is called the benthos. Some of these creatures, such as lobsters and snails, may be able to move about on the bottom but their lifestyle is so bound up with the ocean floor that they are unable to survive away from this environment.
12.The text mainly tells us something about ________.
A.marine plants and marine animals
B.two types of sea plants
C.three kinds of sea animals
D.small and big animals in the ocean
13.Why can’t we find the rooted plants in deep water of the ocean?
A.Because there are too many rocks at the bottom of the ocean.
B.Because the rooted plants can’t stand the coldness of the ocean.
C.Because there is not enough sunlight for them in deep water.
D.Because the rooted plants need more sunlight than plants which have no roots.
14.One of the characteristics of zooplankton is that ________.
A.they are small and never grow to large size
B.some of the zooplankton can’t swim effectively
C.they can swim freely in deep water of the ocean
D.they need more sunlight than other animals in the ocean
15.According to the last paragraph,we can conclude that ________.
A.benthos live on the surface of the ocean water
B.some of the benthos can’t live without the ocean floor
C.benthos spend most of their time swimming in the ocean
D.benthos can move about in the middle of the sea water

One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are a few suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course,as you’ll be able to learn from the teacher and practise with your fellow students. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible.
Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily by doing so. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.
Try to write to me in Chinese next time.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing(追逐)the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn't notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped(滑)and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.
"Help! Help!" We cried. I could feel my body tingling(酸麻)as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn't able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.
注意:1. 续写词数应为120左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1:
Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Fortunately the two boys managed to find a lifeguard.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
读后续写;
Luckily two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily. Eventually they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard. Having learned what was happening, the lifeguard rushed fearlessly against the strong wind and huge waves. Such an experienced swimmer was he that he reached us in no time. He grabbed my arm and quickly carried me to the shore where he left me taken care of by the two boys. Then without delay he returned to save my sister. We were so blessed to be alive and heartily thankful to that courageous lifeguard and the two boys who had saved our lives!
