There are many ways in which human cloning is expected to benefit humans.

Dr. Richard Seed, one of the leading supporters of human cloning technology, suggests that it may someday be possible to completely change the aging process because of what we learn from cloning.

Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged. Heart disease is the number one killer in the US and several other industrialized countries.

There has been a breakthrough with human stem cells. Embryonic stem cells can be grown to produce organs to repair or replace damaged ones. Skin for burn victims, brain cells for the brain damaged, hearts, lungs, and kidneys could be produced. By combining this technology with human cloning technology, it may be possible to produce needed organs for suffering people that will be free of rejection by their immune systems. Conditions such as Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, heart failure, and other problems can be cured if human cloning and its technology are not banned.

Though current treatments for infertility (不生育) are getting a fair amount of publicity in the news, they, in terms of percentages, are not very successful. Some data shows that current infertility treatments are less than 10 percent successful. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before possible.

( )8.According to Dr. Richard Seed, we can use cloning technology to ________.

A.produce more animals B.make people live happily

C.make people look younger D.cure people of many diseases

( )9.We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.cloning has already been used to treat heart disease

B.we can treat a mans heart disease by cloning hearts

C.most people in industrial countries suffer from heart disease

D.more people die of heart disease than of other diseases in the US

( )10.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.With cloning infertile couples could have children.

B.Treatment of infertility is not successful.

C.Infertile couples suffer a lot physically and mentally.

D.It is difficult for couples to have more children now.

( )11.What is the authors attitude towards human cloning?

    A.Supportive.  B.Doubtful.

    C.Cautious.  D.Curious.

Summer heat can be dangerous, and heat leads to tragedy far too often. According to Kidsandcars Organisation, an average of 37 young children per year die of car heat in the US, when they are accidentally left in a hot vehicle.

For Bishop Curry, a fifth grader from McKinney, Texas, one such incident hit close to home. A six-month-old baby from his neighbourhood died after hours in a hot car. After hearing about her death, Curry decided that something needed to be done. Young Curry drew up a sketch(草图) of a device he called Oasis.

The device would be attached to car seats and watch the temperature inside the car. If it reached a certain temperature in the car, and the device sensed a child in the car seat, it would begin to circulate cool air. Curry also designs the device using GPS and Wi-Fi technology, which would alarm the childs parents and, if there was no response from them, the police.

Currys father believes that the invention has potential. The cool thing about Bishops thinking is none of this technology is new, he said. We feel like the way hes thinking and combining all these technologies will get to production faster. His father even introduced the device to Toyota, where he works as an engineer.

In January, Currys father launched a campaign for the invention. They hope to raise money to finalize the patent, build models, and find a manufacturer. They have raised more than twice thatover $46,000.

I was so proud of him for thinking of a solution, the father said. We always just complain about things and rarely offer solutions.

( )12.What inspired Curry to invent Oasis?

A.His narrow escape from death after being locked in a car.

B.His knowledge of many childrens death because of car heat.

C.The death of his neighbors baby after being left in a hot car.

D.The injury of 37 children in his school in a car accident.

( )13.What would Oasis do if it was hot in a car with a child?

A.It would inform the parents or even the police.

B.It would pump out the hot air in the car.

C.It would sound the alarm attached to the car.

D.It would get the window open to save the child.

( )14.What does Currys father think is cool about Currys invention?

A.It used some of the most advanced technology.

B.It simply combined technologies that existed.

C.It could accelerate production of new technology.

D.It is the most advanced among similar products.

( )15.Why did Currys father start a campaign to raise money?

A.To conduct experiments to test the invention.

B.To get other children devoted to inventions.

C.To support a charity of medical aid for children.

D.To get the patent and bring it to production.

    ___________

    One possible version:

As the long holiday is drawing near, the students in our class have had a discussion about their holiday plans. Our opinions are varied.

Some students plan to stay at home, saying that it can save money and is more comfortable. More importantly, they can make better use of the time to learn their lessons. However, they are worried that their life may be boring.

Others prefer to travel for pleasure. When traveling to strange places, they can relax themselves and broaden their horizon. But they will spend a lot of money on their journey. Besides, they have to put up with some inconveniences.

As for me, Id like to travel because we are tired physically and mentally after a whole term. Traveling is a good way to refresh ourselves.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Be quiet. No one actually ever said that to mein fact, it was usually the opposite Speak up. What did you say? I couldnt understand you. But every time someone told me to be louder, to be clearer, I wanted to shut my mouth and never open it again.

Years of living with a lisp(口齿不清) had taught me that it was better to say nothing than to speak and risk being misunderstood, leading to embarrassment and awkwardness. As a result of my silence, I felt distanced from most of my peers, having only a few people I felt were friends. Kathryn? Oh, shes quiet. Thats what most people would say when they thought of me. Quiet might as well have been part of my name. I was okay with that. I didnt need to be heard.

September of last year that all changed.

I started my first day of creative writing class with Ms Haist. She is one of those teachers you dont feel frightened to approach; you know she will help you if you need it. I had expected to fill out plot diagrams and learn the proper way to punctuate dialogue. However, every day we would be given a different writing prompt(提示词) and then, if we wished, we could share what we had written with the class. I remember sitting and listening to others read their work, and I distinctly remember thinking: That will never be me. Ill never have the courage to do that.

Then, one day in October, I was really pleased with what I had written, so pleased that I wanted to share. I remember my heart pounding in my chest as I raised my hand to read, and those urgent little voices in my mind listing all the reasons why it wasnt a good idea: They wont understand you. You have a lisp, remember? Besides, your writing isnt that good. Be quiet. Be quiet. I was about to withdraw my hand when I met Ms Haists encouraging eyes.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I swallowed the voices down and let my real voice come out. _________________________ ________________________________________________________________________

    One possible version:

I swallowed the voices down and let my real voice come out.  At first, my voice was very low. I read my articles carefully. After I finished the first paragraph fluently, my classmates eyes all looked at me with affirmation. Having finished reading this article, I was praised by Ms Hester for the content that I wrote and the changes that I made in class. It was the first time that I had received warm applause from my teacher and classmates. When I went home, a card was found in my notebook with a sentence saying Everything is possible. There was no doubt that it was given to me by Ms Hester.

Soon I was reading out loud nearly every day. ___________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________

    One possible version:

Soon I was reading out loud nearly every day.  In the morning, I would practice my favourite novels near the grove at school, because I wanted to realise my dream. My dream is to become an announcer in the next semester, which would entitle me to share the students writing and my favourite articles. In class, I tried my best to seize every opportunity to improve myself. Gradually, I began to have normal conversations with my classmates and got along well with them. Everything in life was becoming more and more beautiful.
