Since well protected by his mother’s body,he was safe. He was in a deep sleep when the rescuer carried him out,and his lovely and peaceful face warmed everyone around him. Is there a magic cutoff period when children become responsible for their own actions? Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, “It’s their life,” and feel nothing?
When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital passage waiting for doctors to put a few stitches (缝线) in my son’s head. I asked, “When do you stop worry?” The nurse said, “When they get out of the accident stage.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.
When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked continually and disrupted the class. As if to read my mind, a teacher said. “Don’t worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.
When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said, “They’re trying to find themselves. Don’t worry, in a few years, you can stop worrying. They’ll adults.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.
By the time I was 50, I was sick and tired of being weak. I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle, there was nothing I could do about it. My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.
I continued to suffer from their failures, and be absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married, I could stop worrying and lead my own life. I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted by my mother’s warm smile and her occasional “You look pale. Are you all right? Call me the minute you get home. Are you depressed about something?” Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry?
One of my children telephoned me last month, saying, “Where were you? I’ve been calling for three days, and no one answered. I was worried.”
I smiled a warm smile.

D.parents don’t have to worry their children
26.The author mentioned her ages of twenties, thirties, forties and fifty in order to show ________.
A.the hard times she experienced in her life
B.the different stages of her children
C.she had been worrying about her children in her life
D.the support she received from her mother
27.What can we infer from the last sentence “I smiled a warm smile”?
A.Finally the mother didn’t have to worry about her children.
B.The mother was pleased that her child began to worry about her, too.
C.At last the mother could live her own life without worry.
D.The mother felt satisfied that she had succeeded in turning her children into adults.

School bus driver was not Michael Mason’s first job. In fact, he had retired from the FBI. “About half of the FBI fell under me,” Mason said. “And I was fourth on the FBI’s food chain.” But unlike many retirees, Mason was not sitting at home and relaxing. He started a new job — as a bus driver.
The shortage of bus drivers had impacted countless families nationwide. One single mother in Baltimore said she was forced to call a taxi three to four times a week just to get her kids to school. In Massachusetts, National Guard members were sent to drive buses. Pennsylvania was considering doing the same.
Mason found out about the school bus driver shortage in his area while watching TV, and decided to do something to help. “When COVID-19 struck, there were so many people that were doing so many extra things,” he said.
“People like convenience store workers; people like telecommunications workers. All kinds of people who still had to do their job,” Mason continued. “And I felt like I could be doing something to help in this post-COVID recovery.”
He hoped to inspire others to take part. “I believed if all of us gave a little something, we could greatly impact this world and change this world,” he said.
It might not be his first job, but Mason took his job seriously. “Before we start up the bus each morning, we do what’s called a pre-examination,” he said, making his rounds on the bus. “The thing that we want to primarily make sure of is that every kid is going to be safe on this bus.”
“I’ve done some important things, but guess what? This is important, too,” Mason said.
28.What do we know about Michael Mason?
A.He changed his job many times.
B.He doesn’t enjoy staying at home.
C.He has rich experience in driving school buses.
D.He busies himself with something even after retirement.
29.Why is a single mother mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To explore the situation of taxis. B.To show that bus drivers are in demand.
C.To suggest many families have no cars. D.To say she has some trouble picking up kids.
30.How does Mason feel about his new job?
A.Attractive. B.Stressful. C.Interesting. D.Meaningful.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.A promising job. B.A happy retirement.
C.A retiree’s social contribution. D.A recent common social problem.

第一节 读后续写(满分25分)
66. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad, George, only had an eighth-grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14. he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation. Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone. The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The pay day arrived at last.

67.Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, one of the students who attended the course English Film Appreciation last term. I’m writing to talk about my opinions about my favourite course.
I like it very much mainly for the following two reasons. First, in this course, we are exposed to different kinds of English films, which helps us improve both our English listening and speaking. Equally attractive are the amazing stories of the heroes, because they show us how a person can work hard to make a difference. As a young student, I suggest that the teacher choose some more varieties of films that appeal to us teenagers, thus making the course more interesting. Besides, more activities should be designed so that we can have more chances to practice our English.
I’d appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into consideration. Hoping that the course will win more popularity.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
