Have you ever had trouble choosing suitable books for your children? Here we introduce three books that will make your children look forward to bedtime.
Alone
One day, Maddie decides to stay at her grandparents’ empty apartment alone without telling her parents. However, an unexpected middle-of-the-night evacuation leaves her completely alone in Colorado town, without power or any way to communicate with her loved ones. With only the neighbor’s dog by her side, Maddie spends the next three years fighting against bad weather, hunger, wild dogs and loneliness. (Ages 10-up)
Time for Kenny
It describes a day in a kid’s life. Painted in the artist’s characteristically loose, rounded line, brown-skinned Kenny is first seen playing thoughtfully with a large toy bus. “It’s time for Kenny to get dressed for the day,” the narrator announces. Can Kenny wear his father’s shirt or his mother’s shoes? No. His parents smile as he tries them on, and admire him once he’s properly dressed. Such a small, everyday event conveys that Kenny is an innocent child cherished by his family. (Ages 4-up)
The Animal Rescue Agency 1: Case File: Little Claws
In the story, Esquire, a fox, and Mr. Pepper, an elderly rooster, set out to save Little Claws,a young polar bear. Because a evil fur-wearing animal dealer planned to sell the baby bear to a Florida zoo. Living up to their motto — “To each animal, it has the right to live its natural life”, the team prevented the dealer’s plan and took the risk of setting all the Arctic animals in a house free. It provides a light-hearted read with environmental conservation at its core. (Ages 8-12)

I had just delivered a memorable speech, and I was about to learn how the judges decided my performance. The audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room. I felt the drum rolled in my heart.
The third-place winner was announced. The name was not mine. Then the second-place winner, still not me. At last, the moment of truth came. I was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months’ preparation. My heart felt closer to the latter.
Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However, it was an indescribable feeling to drive a 200-mile round trip, get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors in my group. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who kicked his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh.” Oh yeah, I could relate.
I had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech Contest. After not placing in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give up on a second contest! I reworked my speech for the following year, but again I did not place.
I couldn’t accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on, until I thought about my hero. Never mind the lost prize money and praise—through learning stories about Lincoln, I discovered that I can fail successfully.
24. How did the author feel after finishing his speech?
A. Delighted B. Annoyed C. Nervous D.Thrilled
25. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. He was regretful about his not being fully prepared.
B. He felt upset for getting up early on a chilly morning.
C. He once kicked and hurt his toe when he was 12 years old.
D. He turned out to be the last one of his group in the contest.
26. Why did the author decide to enter the second contest?
A. He was eager to prove himself to be the best contestant.
B. He was inspired by the never-give-up spirit of Lincoln.
C. He was willing to enjoy the warmth and joy of victory.
D. He was determined to win the prize money and praise.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A memorable hero in my life
B. Never mind others’ judgments
C. Losing is an indescribable feeling
D. Stand up from where we tripped over
C
Every year thousands of people come to the city of Pamplona, in north-eastern Spain, for the opportunity to run for their lives as six fighting bulls are released to charge through the town. There are injuries and deaths every year, but the event is of interest to many people. A paper just published in Science describes the insight the event offers into the psychology of panicked crowds.
That is a useful topic to explore. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners must try to work out how people will behave in the event of a disaster like a fire, a flood or a terrorist attack, so they can design their creations to avoid potentially deadly collisions (碰撞). Unfortunately, solid information is hard to come by. Daniel Parisi, the paper’s lead author, realized that the Pamplona bull-runs offered the perfect natural experiment.
Dr Parisi and his team went to two different rooftop locations in Pamplona in July 2019, and filmed the runners as the animals were released. Later in the lab, they calculated the speed of the runners, the density (密度) of the crowd, the probability of a runner tripping and falling and the relationship between runner-group density and speed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers found that runners picked up speed when the bulls drew near. Less expected was the finding that the speed of individual runners increased with the density of the crowd, which was contrary to a long-held assumption in architectural and urban-design circles that people will slow their pace as group density goes up, in order to lower the risk of a collision, which could lead to a fall and, perhaps, injury or death.
Yet it seems that, in the heat of the moment, people pay little attention to the danger of colliding with each other, and do not slow down. The responsibility therefore falls upon urban designers to work out how best to plan the construction of future tunnels, bridges and other passages that restrict flow. The only option may well be to make them broad enough.
28. What did Dr Parisi and his team do in Pamplona?
A. They recorded a bull-run. B. They proved their theory.
C. They watched a thrilling bull-fight. D. They designed a psychological experiment.
29. What was the unexpected finding in the study?
A. People slowed down in crowded areas.
B. Collisions posed a danger to bull-runners.
C. People tended to speed up in high-density crowds.
D. Bulls coming near made people running faster.
30. What is implied in the last paragraph?
A. People lose their mind in disasters.
B. Future tunnels and bridges may be wider.
C. Panicked crowds are aware of the danger of collision.
D. Restricting flow helps to prevent people colliding each other.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. How crowds react to panic B. Bull-runs caught on in Spain
C. Dr Parisi’s finding shocks the world D. What can be learned from a bull-run
D
Researchers from Purdue University have developed a new white paint that can reflect over 95 percent of sunlight, which can cool the surface even lower than the surrounding temperature. Painted on a building, the new paint could help cut cooling costs and energy use.
Many different reflective cooling paints have been developed over the years, but they all have their drawbacks. For the new study, the Purdue researchers developed a new method—using calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) fillers, which are much richer, cheaper, and absorb less ultraviolet (紫外线的) light. And the new reflective cooling paint can give off more sunlight—reflecting 95.5 percent of the light that strikes it. That’s better than many of the other paints in development, which manage between 80 and 90 percent, although it falls short of the record holder—the Teflon coating, which reflects 98 percent of light.
The team tested the new coating outdoors over two days, and showed that under direct sunlight it remained 1.7℃ below the surrounding temperature. In another set of tests, the researchers painted some parts of a pattern with the new paint, and others with a regular white paint of the same thickness. Using a special camera, they could see the pattern clearly, thanks to the difference in temperature between the two materials.
The team says that the new paint could not only help cool buildings, but prevent outdoor electrical systems from overheating. But to ensure that it is commercially practicable, the researchers next plan to investigate how well it lasts out in the environment.
“The cost of our paint may be comparable to other commercial paints or even lower than them,” says Xiulin Ruan, an author of the study. “The key is to ensure the reliability of the paint so that it is workable in long-term outdoor applications.”
32. What’s does the underlined word “drawbacks” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Mistakes. B. Burdens. C. Difficulties. D. Disadvantages.
33. How did the researchers study the effect of the new paint?
A. By conducting field tests. B. By analyzing special pictures.
C. By comparing costs of paints. D. By assessing its nature.
34. What can we infer from the result of the research?
A. The paint is incomparable B. The paint can be used for long.
C. The paint still needs testing. D. The paint has reliable performance.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. A regular paint solves heat consumption.
B. A new white paint helps cool building.
C. Researchers lower the costs of paints.
D. Environment-friendly paints are on sale.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Andrew was a new student in my class, who had emotional management problems. Since he had been suspended from class many times in previous years, I assured the worst when he came to my class.
Andrew sat at the back of the classroom. Every time I talked in front of the class, he would chat with the students around and even laugh loudly. Every time I called on him to answer a question, he would respond with a casual “I don’t know”. If I gave him a slight criticism, he would become really angry. As an experienced teacher, I can always get students involved in class discussion or at least motivate them to sit quietly and listen attentively. But for Andrew, I was really powerless. He was just noisy and rude.
One day, Andrew was talking loudly in the class when I was teaching. I said in the usual tone of voice, “Andrew, why don’t you join in our discussions but have one of your own?” Hearing that, he got up from his chair, pushed the books over and shouted something. I couldn’t hear clearly what he said other than several rude words. After the class, Andrew was sent to my office, where I gave him a discipline punishment—a week’s out-of-school suspension. Deep in my mind, though, I didn’t expect the punishment to be effective since students would return behaving even worse than before. But what else could I do with such a trouble-maker?
I had to admit this was one of my most awful teaching experiences. Andrew’s anger was almost unexpected and out of control. The week without Andrew’s presence was a wonderful time, and the class went on smoothly and efficiently. However, with his suspension week drawing to a close soon, I felt restless and uneasy. Would he disturb the class as always? Would he take revenge(报复)on me?

1. 续写词数应为150左右:
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Hello, everyone,
We are glad to come back to school, facing new chance and challenges. In the new term, we, senior three students, will have to shoulder more tasks to prepare for the NMET. Time and tide waiting for no one, we will make use of every minute to equip ourselves with knowledge and skills. Besides, we are supposed to actively participate in different activities to be held in our school so as to improve ourselves in all aspects.
After all, god helps those who help themselves. From now on, I hope every one of us will struggle to the end to make our dream come true.
Thank you for listening.
读后续写
One possible version:
On the day when Andrew was supposed to return, I waited for him at the door. Eventually, the familiar figure appeared, walking with his hands in his pockets. As he came close, I was about to greet him when he ignored me deliberately. “Sorry, Andrew. I should have had a talk with you to find a way out before giving you a suspension,” apologized I. With his head lowered, he didn’t utter a single word. “Maybe next time you can’t control yourself in class, you can step out of the door for a while to collect yourself,” added I, trying to break the ice.
A flash of surprise spread over his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. “It is I who should say sorry,” murmured he, his face burning with shame. With a smile of relief, I patted him on the shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Andrew didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. Never before did it occur to me that “apologies” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst experiences into perhaps the best one!

Italian businessman Luca Desiata published a new book of crossword puzzles in Latin and ancient Greek this month.(19)This book is thought to be the first with no help or explanations in modern languages.
