Madison stared through the window and watched a puffy white cloud pass over the woods across  from the school. It must be wonderful to be a bird, she thought. Total freedom. No math class to sit in, and her days would be Spent on horseback. she thought of her horse, Star.

“Madison. Could you please join us again?” Mrs. Smith said. “I was just asking the class ifanyone had any problems with the homework assignment.”

“Well, I didn’t have any problems doing it, but I had problems remembering to put it in my school bag after I did it.” Some giggling spread through the room.

“Madison. I don't know what I am going to do with you. You're such a smart girl but you justdon’t apply yourself. Class, clear your desks. Our guest is here and welcome Doctor Landon. He is a veterinarian(兽医). He came here today as part of our continued Career Explorations Program.”

Madison tried to focus as Doctor Landon talked about how important grades were and how he struggled with math when he was a kid. Doctor Landon was still talking but she lost track of what hewas saying. Then a word caught her attention. Horse. Was he talking about horses?

Gradually, Madison knew Doctor Landon had come to her town and house when her horse, Star, needed care. She liked it that he even knew her horse’s name. “So, you just travel around and take careof horses all day long?”

Doctor Landon nodded. “I travel with my truck to take care of horses and ponies across the county. It is a lot ofwork, but I love it.”

Madison's mouth fell open. What a life that must be, she thought. At that moment, sitting in class,Madison could see her future and her life suddenly seemed bigger. By the time she got offthe bus thatafternoon, her plans for the afternoon had changed. She was still going to ride Star, but first she wasgoing to spend an hour studying math. Nowadays, countries are eager to get more electric cars on the road because moving away fromgas-powered vehicles is vital to fighting climate change. China says that most new vehicles sold by2035 will be electric. The United Kingdom will ban new gas-powered cars in 2030. One ofthe world'smajor automakers, General Motors (GM), announced that it would stop selling gas-powered cars by2035.

The key to an electric future is batteries. Automakers are racing to pack the most energy into the smallest one. The 1ithium-ion (锂离子) battery is what powers our mobile devices, which can berecharged again and again. Making these batteries has an environmental cost. Lithium is taken from theearth, like the oil used to make gasoline. But the long-term cost is much smaller. "Once you bumgasoline, you can't recycle it," says Jessika Trancik, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology. "But when you use up a battery, you can still recycle the material."

It’s up to governments to make electric cars accessible to everyone. National policies can help. Inthe United States, an electric Chevy Volt costs about $35,000. Trancik says charging stations must alsobe made widely available. As part ofan effort to fight climate change, America plans to build half amillion ofthem in the US by 2030. She hopes enough charging stations will be built soon. “It’simportant to put chargers where many different people can have access to them,” she says. “Not justwealthier people.”

Last year, almost 5% of approximately 67 million new cars sold worldwide were electric. ForVenkat Viswanathan, a professor of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, greenelectricity is part ofthe solution to climatechange, and electric cars are just the beginning. He sees afuture of solar-powered homes and electric flying cars. "Soon, a plug-in vehicle might be as cheap as agas-powered car. It is now abundantly clear that electric is the future," he says. "It will be a totally newworld."

28Which word best describes Trancik's attitude to the 1ithium-ion battery?

    AConservative     BSkeptical       CPositive    DDisapproving

29What does Trancik indicate about charging stations in Paragraph 3?

AThey should come down in price.         BThey may be unfairly laid out.

CEnough ofthem have been built.        DThey favor more ordinary people.

30What can be inferred from Viswanathan?

AGas-powered cars will be cheaper.            BGreen electricity will be widely used.

CThe price ofbatteries will drop sharply.      DElectric vehicles will beat climate change.

31What can be a suitable title for the text?

ACharging Stations Are Needed           BVehicles Have Clean Options

Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working”to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is workinghard he or she spends a long time in the 1ibrary and is not afraid to push on late into the night but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she's doesn't actually accomplish much.

This phenomenon can beseen on must college campuses . For example , at  Dartmouth there was a

section ofthe main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see therelate at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate whoflips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.

By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, thesestudents are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the task at hand.In the end they get halfthe results with twice the effort.

The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they’re pseudo-working. Tothem pseudo-working is work it’s how they've always done it, and it's how all oftheir friends do it.It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only wastes time, but it's also mentally tiring.

In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work donequickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive scienceresearch concludes that aboutfifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit. So howdo these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simpleformula (): work accomplished = time spent × intensity of focus.

Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something bypseudo-working, you need to spend a lot oftime. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increasesintensity in order to use less time.

32Which ofthe following phenomenon is pseudo-working?

ATom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.

BMike is sitting at a study lounge in preparation for a final exam quietly.

CJack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.

DAlice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.

33Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that.

Athey want to spend more time on study

Bthey are eager to follow their friends' way

Cthey have got used to their study approach

    Dthey are unaware oftheir pseudo-working

34What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?

    APossible          BBest              CLeast          DAccurate

35What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?

AThe length oftime on study counts.

BConcentration plays a key role in study.

CGetting work done quickly means everything.

DEffective study approach is very important.

    The Ancient Chinese Game ofGo

Weiqi, known in English as Go, is one ofthe four skills that an ancient Chinese intellectual (知识分子) could possess. It has a history of well over 4, 000 years in China and remains popular. Culturally, this activity is really "more than just a game".

36   One of China’s classics, The Romance ofthe Three Kingdoms, describes the famousgeneral Guan Yu playing Go while receiving surgery on his arm.

History books have recorded quite a number ofkeen Go fans from each dynasty. Today, there arestill many in China, Japan and South Korea. Wu Yulin, a professional, explains its attraction, “In Go,you can learn the dialectics (辩证法) and military stratagems.   37    There are numerousvariations within the game and you can never reach the bottom ofit.”

38    Hua Yigang, Secretary General ofthe China Go Association, remarks on thecharacter-building qualities of Go. “You have to become entirely calm, otherwise you can’t play it. Youhave to be very strong of mind.   39    You might make mistakes during a game, and then have toreadjust your mentality in order to fight to the end.”

In fact, all of our minds can benefit from playing Go, which officially has the capacity to makeyou smarter. Research has shown that children who play Go have the potential for greater intelligence.   40

Today, the number ofGo fans in China is at 36 million and rising. Some universities like BeijingUniversity are even offering courses in Go to undergraduates.

AThere’s always loss as well as gain.

BIt’s a war between equal powers.

CThat is because it motivates both the right and left sides ofthe brain.

DYou can also cultivate your character and improve your intelligence.

EBut more often, ancient Chinese played Go to cultivate their mind and character.

FThe influence of Go on Chinese society is quite evident in literature works.

GMany people also love this ancient game for the Chinese philosophy it contains.

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it's my dad who sings silly songs or tellscorny jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.

While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the schooldidn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right thenand there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”

Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.

“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?”“Of course! ” she said. “Ifwe want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.”“I knowvolunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?”She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”

“OK, fellas!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little earlytoday because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcomeArizona’s mother.”

I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliestsnowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a funlittle song-and-dance performance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Heregoes!”

Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or an assembly, or apower failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself- and me!!!

But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on somebackground music and started singing and dancing away.

    写作第一节

Honorable guests, dear teachers and fellow students,

On behalf of our school, 1 feel it a great honor to express our warm welcome and briefly introduce the

    arrangements.

As scheduled, you’ll first be shown around our campus to have a general impression of it. The next day, tohave you get a taste of Chinese traditional culture, several activities will be arranged, ranging from visiting apaper-cutting exhibition to appreciating the art of Chinese calligraphy. Then follows a get-together in our canteen, where we’ll enjoy Chinese cuisine of different flavors.

Wish you a pleasant stay here! Thank you.

    第二节

“I can t believe this is happening” was all I could think. I closed my eyes, covered my ears and shrank aslow as I possibly could in my chair. After a few seconds, though, I mustered up enough courage to uncover oneear and peek through a half-open eye. That’s when I saw the expression of pure joy on my mom’s face. She washaving so much fun that I couldn’t help smiling. My classmates clapped and cheered, and I heard someone say,“Wow! Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”

My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing. She was also good at teaching us the song andthe dance steps, too. We learned quickly. By the time of the fair, I was actually proud of her for putting herself outthere for the sake of us kids. Our performance at the Winter Fair was a huge success. As we drove home, I said tomy mom, “I’m really glad you volunteered to help my class with the performance.” My mom reached back andsqueezed my hand. “Thanks for saying that. I can see why you might’ve been embarrassed, but I had such a greattime.”
