Last month, I was sorting through an old box when I came across a time capsule, in purpleand green floss(丝线). Faded(褪色的) and worn, it was a friendship bracelet (手链)—animportant part of my teenage summers. Holding it in my hand made me think about thoseprecious memories of childhood, which my kids will never know firsthand.
My handiwork wasn't beautiful. But what I remember is the beauty of the offering: slipping something into a friend's hand and knowing it would always be with them. The experience was intoxicating; physical and concrete, like the serious business of exchanging wedding rings, it was a symbol of an unbreakable bond. Those bracelets represented how much we meant to each other, at a time when our friends were becoming the center of our lives.
I slept with my bracelets and showered with them. I wore them all summer long at camp. And I acquired new bracelets from friends there—-friends who received carefully crafted bracelets from me in return, as we said our tearful end-of-summer goodbyes. I thought having them helped ease the pain of leaving my friends. But now I see that they were really helping me to leave behind childhood.
My kids don't go to summer camp. They certainly don't exchange anything as uncool asbracelets with their friends. They hang out on Discord (一种聊天软件) in chats that only pausebut never end. Our eldest son endlessly texts on his cellphone as he and his friends make one another talking emojis and TikTok videos.
Their relationships with their phones leave no time or space for writing letters or making bracelets, and their gifts to one another leave no clear and definite traces. There will be no boxes of letters to sort years from now nor any hidden bracelets to find. They will have little to physically hold on to.
24. Why does the author associate a bracelet with a time capsule?
B. It reminds her of her childhood.
A. It is faded and worn.
D. It was made by the author herself.
C. It is shaped like a capsule.
25. What does the underlined word "intoxicating" mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Professional. B. Temporary. C. Exciting. D. Strange.
26. Why does the author think her kids’ childhood is different from hers?
A. They make more friends at summer camp.
B. They spend too much time on their cellphones.
C. They are unwilling to give bracelets to parents.
D. They often send hand-made gifts to their friends.
27. What can be inferred about the friendship bracelets?
A. They proved the author's kids had much to physically hold onto.
B. They represented both the author and her kids' unforgettable childhood.
C. They gave meaning to the author's childhood in a way her kids will never know.
D. They recalled the author's deep sorrow of leaving close friends at summer camp.
C
Parenting techniques may have long lasting consequences for behavior-even when it comes to dogs.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania studied the early development, parenting and the following performance of 98 puppies who underwent guide dog training. Dogs who received more independence and less support from their mothers were more likely to be successful in becoming a guide dog. The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Mom-pup interactions were used to define how highly involved the puppy's mothers were. Puppies raised with highly involved mothers were more likely to be released-or dropped out from the guide dog program- compared to those with less attentive mothers.
“Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing,"said lead study researcher Emily Bray.Although the study couldn't definitely point to what was driving this effect,"one possibility isthat the dogs that are having overbearing (专横的) mothers are never given the chance to deal with small challenges on their own, and is harmful to their later behavior and outcome in their problem solving. Another possibility is that the puppies for whom the mothers are always around are also the most anxious or stressed," she explained.
“What I was happy about was that there is a study being done about early life experiences in dogs," another researcher Dolores Holle said. "If the mom is trying to protect her pups againstsmall challenges, then they will not be suited for the big challenges."
The study included three breeds(品种): German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and Goldenretrievers. The puppies were followed from the first weeks of life for several years. Interestingly, Labrador retrievers tended to wash out from the program, while Golden retrievers tended to succeed.
As for whether the findings can be applied to human babies of so-called "helicopter parents," Bray was hesitant.
“I think people can draw parallels (相似之处), but I think you also have to be carefulbecause they are different species,"she said.
She added, "The nice thing about dogs is that they are a lot less complicated than humans."28. What makes successful guide dogs according to the study?
A. Less attentive owners.
B. More practical training.
C. Less supportive mothers.
D. More tense environment.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The necessity of mom-pup interactions.
B. Some characteristics of good guide dogs.
C. The significance of high parental involvement.
D. Potential causes of some puppies' poor performance.
30. What can we know about Labrador retrievers in the study?
A. They choose to stay.
B. They fail to be qualified.
C. They rise to challenges.
D. They are easy to notice.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Parenting techniques can apply to guide dogs
B. Guide dogs are less complicated than humans
C.Researchers help raise public awareness of blind people
D. A study is done about early life experiences of human babies
D
The "little voice in your head”" can be your worst critic and greatest supporter. It's been known to help with directions, give advice, and even remind you to put potatoes on the grocery list.
But does everyone have an inner monologue(独白)? For a long time, it was assumed that aninner voice was simply part of being human. But it turns out, that's not the case-not everyoneprocesses life in words and sentences.
"By inner monologue, we mean that we can have private speech that's addressed to ourselves and that is carried out without any sound," said Helene Levenbruck, a senior neurolinguistics researcher at CNRS.
With true inner speech, you almost"hear" your inner voice, she told Live Science. You'reaware of its tone and intonation (语调). For example, the voice can "sound" angry or worried.
This long-held assumption was first challenged in the late 1990s by Russell Hurlburt, a psychologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Hurlburt studied participants’ inner speech by asking them to wear a beeper (传呼机). Whenever the device beeped, they had to write downwhat they were thinking or experiencing in their mind just before the sound.
Perhaps the participant wrote down, "I need to buy some bread." He would then ask if that'swhat they actually thought."Or did you think‘bread'? Or were you hungry?" Lcevenbruckexplained. After several meetings, participants got better at articulating(流利连贯地表达) theirtrue thoughts, she said. Eventually, this method revealed that some people had inner speech everytime the device beeped. But others had less inner speech than usual, and some didn't have innerspeech at all. They experienced images, sensations and emotions, but not a voice or words.
The lack of an inner monologue has been linked to a condition called aphantasia(心盲症)—sometimes called“blindness of the mind's eye."People who experience aphantasia can'tmentally picture their bedroom or their mother's face. Many times, those who don't experience visualizations don't experience clear inner speech, either, Lcevenbruck noted.
32. What was previously assumed about the inner monologue?
A. It rarely existed in humans.
B. It could help solve all kinds of problems.
C. It was something everyone was born with.
D. It was mainly displayed in the form of writing.
33. What does Loevenbruck say about an inner monologue?
A. It lacks tone and intonation.
B. It is delivered in public.
C. It can be heard by others.
D. It can convey emotions.
34. What did Hurlburt do in his study?
A. He used a beeper to note down participants' inner speech.
B. He required participants to describe their grocery lists.
C. He checked participants’ notes and asked about their true thoughts.
D. He placed something in participants' heads to record their inner speech.
35. Why do some people never experience an inner monologue?
A. They suffer serious brain damage.
B. They cannot distinguish what they see.
C. They misunderstand their true thoughts.
D. They fail to mentally picture what they see.

we are all social emotional beings andthroughout our lives,we will continue to shape ourbehaviors and relationships. However, for lifelong well-being, the development of social emotional skills should be shaped wisely as a child opens its eyes to the world. Here are somestrategic actions that will help you guide your child in improving their social emotional learning skills.
36 If they are crying, tell them “you look sad” or “it looks like you are mad right now." This way you can reflect their emotions to them with words and help them understand andexpress their emotions too.
Approve your children's feelings. Instead of saying "Stop shouting and calm down, it's not a big deal" try to say "I know you are really angry right now but we can talk about it.” 37
Give your kid some space and let them experience uncomfortable feelings. Everyone feels alone or bored sometimes. 38 This will help them tolerate disturbing feelings andsituations going forward.
Accept emotions & correct behaviors. It's okay to feel angry sometimes. Eventually, we need to feel that anger in some specific situations. 39 Teach your children that the feeling is normal, but they shouldn't be screaming loudly in a public area just because they are feeling an emotion as this may make other people uncomfortable.
Support other cognitive skills. 40 Scientific educational brain games appsdeveloped by academicians like those at MentalUP are reliable and beneficial sources to improvecognitive(认知的) skills.
Every parent should keep in mind that all kids can shape and develop their social and emotional skills differently. Trying to find wavs that suit your kids’ needs. interests and according to learning styles is always a better solution than blaming yourself or the kids.
A. Cognitive skills can only be acquired from classroom learning.
B. Define and put into words your children's emotions.
C. However, it is never acceptable to show behaviors.
D. Teach them how to handle those feelings instead of avoiding them.
E. This way you can show them that it's sometimes okay to have big feelings.
F. Social emotional learning also improves students' attitudes towards school.
G. Improving mathematical and problem-solving skills will also support children's social emotional development.

It ishome 56 more than 3 000 years of fascinating history and a place 57 fully embraces the fast-paced development of modern life, with high-rise 21st-century architectural wonders standing side by side with cultural relics of the past.

I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just plain. In class, she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. It was once I asked her to read aloud the text that I looked at her with new eyes when I heard her standard American pronunciation. Later on, the National College English Speech Contest would be held. I thought it over and filled in her name with a smile. I red-penciled her draft of speech, corrected her pronunciation, and even adjusted her body language.
However, I was always kind of worried because she was too introvert (内向的) and too quiet.Could she seize this rare opportunity?
On the night of the contest, I told her to take it easy. Blushed (脸红的), she looked at me andsaid nothing.
My heart sank. It seemed that she did tense up. I patted her and let her go to draw lots(抽签).As a result, what she drew was No. 9 while No.8 was recognized English master-hand (高手).
Sure enough, the English master-hand was fairly successful in the speech with his humor and highly personal style. The whole audience would make a warm applause almost every 30 seconds until she appeared on the stage, still talking over his speech with excitement.
My palms began to sweat. I sat there, with no courage to look at her. It was the first time that she went up the stage, so I couldn't blame her for any slips. But at that moment, I found I was so scared of her failure.
The strong spotlight made her so small and so insignificant that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage, I said to myself, no hope.
But the moment that shocked me occurred. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, "Now, please focus on me." She said this sentence three times in al1. louder and louder.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;
The whole audience fell silent.
After her speech ended for a long while, a thunderous applause sounded in the whole audience.

One possible version:
The whole audience fell silent. Small and thin as the girl appeared, the determined look on her face instantly caught everyone’s eyes. She glanced at the audience, took a deep breathand began her speech. Everything went smoothly-her voice was clear and influential and her speech was logical and well-organized. Words of power and grace flowed freely out of the girl like magic. She was usually soft-voiced and rarely drew attention in public before. Itwas like something in a dream!
After her speech ended for a long while, a thunderous applause sounded in the whole audience. When the competition was drawing to a close, still immersed in her stunning performance, all of us waited nervously for the winner’s name to be called. Tears of joy blurred my vision the moment the host announced that she won the first prize. Holding the trophy tightly, shegave me a brilliant smile. “You surely made yourself the most shining focus tonight!”I exclaimed, cheerfully pulling her into my arms. Yes, sometimes a tremendous energy originates from the silent accumulation.
第21题 B 根据题目中的关键词prefer beach-stylish atmosphere定位到文中第二个酒店中的this small-sized accommodation feels like a private beachside house,以及后文的seafood和pack a picnic to take to the beach可知这个酒店的服务有许多沙滩元素,故选B。
Whether you want a snowy or sunny winter getaway, these hotels are hot on our list of places to stay this winter。
其中提到了三种类型的犬类,而Labrador retrievers常常“tend to wash out from the programme”,也即往往被淘汰。

Text 10
Thank you all for coming to this special hiring event. We have carefully selected the most well-known companies for today’s gathering. There are more than 220 businesses here today, and we’ve been told that there are more than 1,100 job openings that they’re looking to fill! There are almost two thousand of you here, so not everyone will leave with a job offer, but that doesn’t mean you should lose hope if you don’t get one. And keep in mind that not all companies will be making their decisions today.
Here is some advice. First, make sure you have plenty of copies of your resumé. If you need to make more copies, you can use the machines in the main hall. You should also make sure that you look your best, so take a moment to freshen up in the restrooms located on the second floor. You’re trying to make a good first impression, and you may not get more than a couple minutes to do it, so practice what you want to get across to these companies. Don’t wait for them to ask you all the questions. Tell them why you’d be a good fit. The most confident people tend to be the ones who get hired. All right, folks. We’re going to open the doors in five minutes. Good luck!
