I arrived in my Chinese classrm, ready t share my vast knwledge and experience with the 75 students wh wuld be my English Literature class. Having taught in the USA fr 17 years, I had n wrry at all abut my ability t plant in my students enthusiasm fr the literature f my mther tngue.
I was really shcked when the mnitr shuted “Stand up” and the entire class rse as I entered the rm, and I was smewhat cnfused and anxius abut hw t get them t sit dwn again, but nce that embarrassment was ver, I quickly calmed dwn and launched int what I thught was a factpacked lecture, sure t gain their respect — perhaps even their admiratin. I went back t my rm radiating that rsy glw (光泽) that cmes frm a sense f significant accmplishment.
My students kept jurnals, hwever, and as I read them, the rsy glw was gradually replaced by an verwhelming sense f frustratin. The first jurnal said, “Our literature teacher didn't teach us anything tday. Perhaps her next lecture will be better.” Heartbrken, I read jurnal after jurnal, each expressing a similar theme. “Didn't teach them anything? I sketched the entire philsphical framewrk f thught and laid the histrical backgrund fr all the wrks we'll study in class.” I cmplained. “Hw can they say I didn't teach them anything?”
Determined t clear myself, I dug ut all my reference bks, adding backgrund material t my next lecture, researching int the scilgical setting and even the psychlgical state f the authr. After the secnd class, I eagerly pened the jurnals, expecting enthusiastic reviews at last. Again, I was crushed by their cntinuing cmments that I was ging t slwly withut giving meaningful details.
Mre determined than ever, I dived int surces f criticism, deciding t devte mre time t the texts by prviding summaries f all the interpretatins I culd find f each wrk. This material wuld give my students ample infrmatin fr drawing their wn cnclusins abut the wrk's meaning. “Our teacher seems cnfused abut the real meaning f the wrks,” the jurnals said. “One minute she gives ne interpretatin; the next minute she gives anther. Then she asks fr ur pinins. We're the students. She's the teacher. She shuld tell us what the wrks mean.”
It was a lng semester, and it gradually became clear t me that my ideas abut educatin were purely Western, and that Chinese ideas differed significantly. I thught a teacher's jb was t raise interesting questins and prvide enugh backgrund s that students culd draw their wn cnclusins. My students thught a teacher's jb was t prvide accurate infrmatin as directly and cncisely as pssible. Americans wanted t interpret and experience. The Chinese wanted t master and memrise.

根据第一段中的“I had n wrry at all abut my ability t plant in my students enthusiasm fr the literature f my mther tngue.”
根据第二段中的“I was really shcked when the mnitr shuted ‘Stand up’ and the entire class rse as I entered the rm, and I was smewhat cnfused and anxius abut hw t get them t sit dwn again”可知,“我”真的很震惊的原因是“我”不了解中国的教育文化,故选D。
根据上文中的“Hw can they say I didn't teach them anything?” 下文“I dug ut all my reference bks, adding backgrund material t my next lecture, researching int the scilgical setting and even the psychlgical state f the authr.”
根据最后一段中的“I thught a teacher's jb was t raise interesting questins and prvide enugh backgrund s that students culd draw their wn cnclusins.”
