I was so careful. I was nervous too. I had taken driving lessons and passed my driving test. I had to pick up my father from work and drive him to the train station. But as I got close to my father’s workplace, I felt more and more confident.
There he was standing in front of his office building. After I stopped the car, he got in. But then, I was nervous again. I had to get the car into the street. With so many cars around, it wasn’t easy. After about two minutes of waiting, the way was finally clear.
Soon we got onto the highway(公路). My father was giving me some advice on how to change lanes (车道). Suddenly, I saw a police car behind me. They were pulling me over. “Oh no!” I said.
A police officer came to my window. “The speed limit (极限) on these roads is 100 kilometers an hour,” he said. “Do you know how fast you were going?”“120?” I guessed. Of course it was a ridiculous guess. There were so many cars passing me. How could that be?
“No. You were going 65 kilometers an hour. You can’t drive that slow. You’ll cause an accident.”
When he found out this was my first day driving, he laughed and said, “You know, I don’t get to say this very often, but I will tell you. Please go a little faster on these highways. Not too fast though.”
He smiled and walked away. And that was my first day as a driver.

The world uses about a thousand million tops of water a day. Water is a human right(权力) and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating(处理) waste water is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of waste water around the world is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat and reuse the waste water.
While 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 2% is fresh water-that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then desalination businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal(沿海的,靠近海岸的) countries. They process(加工) more than 92 million tons of water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.
Scientists are working to create a less costly technology. They want to produce 20 times more clean water and make sure everyone has enough. But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.
36.How many people have trouble in getting clean water around the world?
A.Under 10 million. B.Only 19 million. C.About 92 million. D.Over 700 million.

40.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Water should be a human right. B.The water problem is still serious.
C.Our planet is covered with water. D.Everyone has enough clean water.
A cloned black-footed ferret (雪貂), Elizabeth Ann,born on Dec.10,2020, has become the first successful clone of an endangered animal in the US and has turned a new page in animal protection.
Black-footed ferrets are one of the most endangered animals in North America, with fewer than 500 in the wild. But in the early 1900s, they were widespread throughout the American West. Later, the ferrets disappeared with their primary food source, prairie dogs (土拨鼠) dying out.
Fortunately, thanks to the cloning technology, Elizabeth Ann came to the earth. She was cloned from Willa, a ferret who died in 1988. Willa’s genes (基因) were saved for years since the cloning technology was not perfect enough at that time. “The theory of genes showed the genetic value that Willa could bring to her babies,” Ryan Phelan, who was working in the project, told CNN. “But it was a promise to see this type of ferret pass on that has led to the successful birth of Elizabeth Ann.” If Elizabeth Ann can reproduce later on, the number of the ferrets may grow, which helps them stand stronger against natural risks, CBS news reported. However, the effects of cloning remain unclear, according to CNN.
Elizabeth Ann will not be put into the wild and will stay in the lab where she was born so researchers can study her, according to BBC.The team is now working on producing more “Elizabeth Anns” in the coming months. Besides that, researchers also point out the importance of protection for ferrets’ living places.
41.What can we know about the black-footed ferrets from the text?
A.They lead a happy life in the wild. B.They are in danger of dying out.
C.They have no chance to pass on. D.They can protect themselves well.
42.The black-footed ferrets are in a bad situation because of ________.
A.the harm of hunting B.the shortage of food
C.the change of genes D.the pollution of water
43.According to the text, the scientists protect the black-footed ferrets through ________.
A.using the cloning technology B.changing living places
C.keeping them in the lab D.providing enough food
44.Which picture may show the change of the ferrets if cloning technology works well?
A. B. C. D.
45.What would be the best title of the text?
A.Effects of Cloning Technology B.Ways of Protecting Animals
C.Research for Wild Animals D.Cloning for Animal Protection
