Are you a tea drinker? If so, you're not alone. Every day around the world millions of cups of this popular brew are drunk, and it's been that way for thousands of years. The oldest discovered tea is from the Han Dynasty, dating from 206BC to 220AD.But it's thought that the tea trend really took off during the Tang Dynasty in the 8th Century, when it became China's national drink. Now, Turkey, the Republic of Ireland and the UK are believed to be the biggest tea-drinking nations, per capita.
Tea is consumed in many: ways - slurped, sipped or glugged. It can be poured from pots, infused or brewed in the cup using tea bags - and it's this latter process that is causing concern. Research last year found some premium tea bags might be leaving billions of microscopic plastic particles in the cup. Scientists from McGill University in Montreal found that some 'plastic' tea bags shed high levels of microplastics into water. However, The World Health Organization says such particles in drinking water do not appear to pose a risk.
Most tea bags are made from paper, with a small amount of plastic used to seal them shut -made from oil. This has led to debate about whether they can be recycled, but many are still composted. However, gardener Mike Armitage has told the BBC that the plastic contained in the soil could be washed into streams and rivers and ultimately out to sea.
Unilever, the owners of the tea brand PG Tips, said their tea bags are made with a small amount of plastic -used to seal them - and that they are suitable for composting. And the brand Yorkshire Tea said their bags do contain 25% polypropylene, but they were “actively developing plant-based and biodegradable alternatives”.
While tea bag manufacturers might be doing their bit to reduce plastic pollution, it could be a good time to switch your favourite beverage to coffee, or if that isn't your cup of tea then try using loose-leaf tea, which can have a better flavour.
24. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. Tea can be consumed in many ways.
B. The use of tea bags doesn't appear to pose a risk.
C. The use of tea bags is causing concern.
D. Some tea bags might be leaving microscopic plastic particles in the cup.
25. What is not a possible solution to the problem caused by tea bags?
A. reduce the amount of plastic used to seal tea bags
B. wash the plastic in the soil into streams, rivers and sea
C. develop plant-based and biodegradable alternatives
D. switch to coffee or try to use loose-leaf tea
26. What is the author's attitude towards the use of tea bags?
A.Supportive B.Indifferent C.Opposed D.Neutral
27.What could be the best title for the text?
A. Potential Plastic Pollution
B. Chinese tea culture
C. What is your favorite drink?
D. The Humble tea bag
C
Thanks to great progress in fundamental research, biology is becoming more programmable. Two recent scientific advances show how powerful the possibilities could be. The genetic modification of plants is allowing the mechanism of photosynthesis to be tinkered with(调整). This could lead to dramatic improvements in the productivity of plants. Tweaking the genes of people who suffer from fatal incurable diseases, meanwhile, has also had remarkable results. A series of genetic therapies has arrived, or is arriving, to treat some fatal diseases. The task now is to spread hese gains far and wide. This attractive promise has been made possible by an enormous investment in fundamental research over the years. Basic knowledge of genetics and the functions and structures of proteins has proved to be a motor for discovery across medicine and agriculture. The private sector, to be sure, plays an essential role in the cycle of innovation. But these advances are a reminder that investment by governments and charities is crucial in areas that offer little commercial benefit in the short term, but which in the long term promise to greatly advance well-being.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that these gains will be realized. Gene therapies are a remarkable technical accomplishment. But their current enormous cost makes them hard for health-care systems to afford.
In the past, novel medicines that started out extremely costly have become much cheaper. If gene therapy is to live up to its promise, it will need to do even better than this. More efficient photosynthesis, too, will need further investment if it is to be commercialized .
The long-term manufacturing costs of a new green revolution will, thankfully, be low; plants make more plants in a way that treatments never can. Gene therapies, however, need innovation to reduce the cost of making them. Here governments, charities and the private sector could usefully work together.
Last, regulators also need to be quicker and more understanding of the gains to society from helping these technologies reach their potential. Innovations can languish without appropriate or timely rule-making. Science has made a genetic revolution possible. Now that revolution must flourish.
28. How do people benefit from these two advances?
A. Fatal diseases will be cured.
B.People can suffer from deadly diseases.
C.The mechanism of photosynthesis can be changed.
D.More food will be produced to feed a hungry planet.
29. Which of the following doesn't contribute to the revolution?
A.Investment by governments.
B.Knowledge of genetics and proteins.
C. Investment by the private sector.
D.Knowledge of medicine and agriculture.
30. What should be done to generalize the achievements according to the author?
A. Regulating the revolution to understand the gains.
B. Innovating gene therapies to reduce the cost.
C. Commercializing photosynthesis to meet the needs
D. Working together to develop new drugs.
31.What does the underlined word “languish” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Manage to thrive. B.Reach their potential.
C. Fail to advance. D.Make proper rules.
D
For centuries, two of the most interesting questions about Leonardo da Vinci's “Mona Lisa” were “Who?” and “When?” A discovery made at Heidelberg University in 2005 answered both. A note confirmed the account of da Vinci's first biographer, Giorgio Vasari: that the sitter was a merchant's wife, Lisa Gherardini. The note also helped date the masterpiece to between 1503 and 1506.
A third conundrum-“Where?”-is still in dispute. But on June 3rd a French engineer,Pascal Cotte, declared that he and a collaborator had identified the landscape in the background of the painting. During a presentation, Mr Cotte contended that the artist was more plausibly depicting a part of his native Tuscany. Da Vinci represented the area not as it was, but as, in an unrealized scheme,he intended it to be.
Mr Cotte, who was asked by the Louvre to create a digital image of the painting, is the inventor of the multispectral camera: a device that can detect not only the drawing below the surface of an oil painting but also intermediate layers of work. It was among these, under what appears to be a pointed rock, that he found a preparatory sketch(草图)showing that da Vinci intended it to represent a castellated tower.
The landscape of the “Mona Lisa” also includes a huge overhanging precipice(悬崖).That is similar to one that da Vinci included in a sketch of a fortress contested(争夺)by Pisa and Florence in a war.The fortress withthe nearby precipice-and a tower-all overlook the river Amo as it snakes from Florence to Pisa. All three also feature in drawings made by da Vinci to illustrate a plan about which, says Mr Cotte,he became “obsessive".
This involved diverting(改道)the Arno to cut off Pisa's water supply and give Florence an outlet to the Mediterranean. In the early 1500s, with the two city-states at war, the idea was under active consideration.Mr Cotte argues that a channel at the right of the “Mona Lisa” is too wide to be a road, and is instead the dried-up bed of the Arno as da Vinci imagined it once his plan had been adopted.
It never was. But if Mr Cotte's theory is right, it might just explain why Gherardini,a Florentine, wears such a contented, if inscrutable, smile.
32. What was painted in the “Mona Lisa” according to Mr Cotte?
A.A part of da Vinci's hometown as it was.
B.An overhanging precipice and a fortress.
C.A pointed rock and a castellated tower.
D.The dried-up bed of a river.
33.Who does “he” refer to in paragraph 4?
A.Pascal Cotte B.Leonardo da Vinci
C.Giorgio Vasari D.Lisa Gherardini
34. Why did Mona Lisa smile based on Cotte's theory?
A. Because da Vinci's idea was taken seriously.
B.Because da Vinci's plan was adopted.
C. Because Pisa's water supply was cut off.
D.Because Florence had a good chance to win the war.
35.What's the best title of the text?
A.Where did Mona Lisa smile?
B. When was the “Mona Lisa"painted?
C.Who was the sitter of the “Mona Lisa"?
D.Why did Mona Lisa put on a smile?
第二节 七选五阅读理解(满分12.5分 共5题 每题2.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Weeds, the fast-growing plants that cannot be eaten and do not bring flowers, are a common problem for gardeners. Some use chemicals to kill weeds. Others pull them up by hand or with heavy machinery. Luckily, there are other ways to limit their growth.
For starters, there are mulches which can bury weeds. Mulches are made from organic material, such as leaves, grass cuttings, and small pieces of wood. They are spread over the ground in a garden to control weeds. Organic mulches break down over time_36_That is not a bad thing, because their decomposition creates nutrients for plants and humus to keep soils wet and full of fresh air.
Plastic mulch is another way to stop weeds. Common black plastic is easy to lay down. It also effectively blocks weeds and helps soil warm faster in the spring. 37 A reflective plastic mulch, for example, keeps some plant-eating insects away. A major problem with plastic is that it breaks apart over time, so eventually it needs to be thrown away. It also adds nothing to the soil as far as nutrients or humus. 38
Finally, in addition to direct attacks on weeds, how you plant your garden can indirectly influence weed growth. For example, close spacing of plants in the garden blocks sunlight from reaching the ground and can limit weed growth. And using a watering method known as drip irrigation will direct small amounts of water to the roots of your plants instead of the weeds. 39_Lying in soil are millions of weed seeds just waiting to be awakened by light and air.
Using any or all of these methods will not permanently stop weed growth. 40
A. So you must add more to your garden often.
B. And plastic also can block air from reaching the soil.
C.However, we could finally make it through our efforts.
D. So it adds little to the soil in terms of humus or nutrients.
E. Instead, your goal is simply to limit their growth in the garden.
F.Whether or not you dig up your soil also influences weed growth.
G. Recent experiments with other colored plastic have shown effects on both bugs and plant growth.

A couple of years ago, just as I do every winter, I bagged up all the items in my closet that I no longer wore, along with the clothing my sons had outgrown(长得穿不下). I issued a call to action to all of my family and friends, asking them to do the same. It is always my hope to re-purpose(重新利用) those things that do nothing more than take up space in our homes, things other people might make better use of. Nothing bothers me more than selfishly squirreling things away, things that we know we will never use or wear, while people in our community go without.
I found an ugly pair of hand-knitted(手工编织)socks in one of the bags donated by a friend. Not to be mean, but they were a bad mixture of colored yarn(纱线): orange, purple, yellow and blue. I had to decide-garbage or donation? It wasn't like they were unusable. They were simply unpleasant to look at, surely not something anyone would choose to wear. I imagine they were a homemade gift gone bad.
I put the ugly socks in the garbage, but ten minutes later, I took them back and put them in the donation pile. Later that afternoon, my mother and I drove down to Madison Avenue in downtown Phoenix. Every winter she and I load up my Jeep with our own cast-offs(自己不穿而赠人的旧衣服) and the donations from friends, and we take them downtown, along with food and water, to distribute to the men and women living on the street. Sometimes I even get my boys involved.
On this particular afternoon, as Mom and I distributed warm clothing and hot food to a small crowd of people outside a local homeless shelter, I reached into the bag and pulled out the last of the donations-the ugly socks. Surreptitiously(偷偷地),I held them in my hand as the crowd of homeless quietly left, each with a grateful smile, a fistful of food and an armload of clothing.

(二)读后续写
Just as I was about to drop the socks back into the empty bag, a teenage boy came up to me. “Can I please have those socks?” he asked, his blue eyes sparkling in the sun. I was surprised handing him the socks. “Thank you so much, Ma'am!” he grinned. “These socks remind me of my grandmother. She used to knit stuff like this for me!” The young man raced to the sidewalk cheerfully as if I had given him a brand new car or a million bucks. He sat down, slipped into the socks, stood up and stomped his feet.
“They're perfect!” he smiled. I was deeply touched by his innocent smile. Those socks not only warmed his feet that day, but so was his heart-and mine. They had rekindled the memory of that young man's grandmother, a woman who must have loved him dearly. I had ever been so thoughtless as to think that those socks, as pitiful as they appeared on the surface, didn't have a purpose. To this day, it's proof that there is happiness in life's simplest things, and we'll never know how much until we've shared those things with others.(165 words)

M: That's because you were hit from behind. (11) You were very lucky, because you were pushed into the crossing. A car almost hit you on your driver's side.
W:I should get out of the car. I need to find my insurance and talk to the other driver.
M:You should stay where you are, Madam. Just in case. The ambulance has just arrived, and they will be here shortly to help you.
W: But I don't understand. I was on my way to work and then - why am I stopped here? (12)
M:Madam, you're going to be fine. I saw the whole thing, and it wasn't your fault. I'm going to talk to the police now.
Text 9(第13题为推断题)
M:Can I help you find something?
W:Yes, I'm going on vacation next week, and I need a book to take with me.
M:What do you usually like to read?(14)
W:I love classics with strong female characters. (14) I get tired of reading about men all the time. I'm looking for something easy and with a happy ending. I don't want to think too hard while I'm traveling!
M:Where are you going? Sometimes it's nice to read about the place you're visiting.
W:England.
M:You might like an author like Jane Austen, who writes with a lot of humor. (15) Or Emily Brontë, another classic author. Her writing is full of emotion. It isn't terribly enjoyable, but it always has powerful female characters.
W:I love Austen and Brontë, but I didn't think about mysteries. Are they frightening?
M: Not at all. The main story is about solving the crime, rather than the murder. I can suggest a few titles.
W:I hope I will have time to finish the book! I'm traveling with my children, and they often interrupt my reading.(16)
M: Let's look for some books for them, too. We have a wonderful youth section right over here. (16)
Text 10(第17题为推断题)
Now, Mr. Toper. When I walked into the room, I knew something was wrong. You looked paler than usual; some of your fingers were even white. I noticed you were wearing a winter jacket, and it's 70 degrees outside. You seemed very tired, and you were moving your left leg around uncomfortably. I wanted to get the test results before I mentioned what I thought of your condition. Now that I have them, I can tell you for certain that you have bad circulation. Your blood is just not moving around your body well. That's why you feel especially cold in your fingers and feet. Not only that- your leg probably aches a lot because you don't walk enough. (18) If you don't take care of your body better, you could be sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. Now, I know it's harder at your age to be active, but you need to become a rather sporty 65-year-old. (19) Before I put you on any medication, we're going to try to get you better naturally. First, you should take a walk every day. Start out slowly the first week. Add more time until you're walking 50 minutes each day. Let's see if that helps, and then you can come back to see me in a month.(20)
