If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it is still safe to eat? The easiest way is to check the “use-by date” printed on the wrapper. If that date has already passed, you're likely to throw the candy away.
But is that really necessary? According to a new report from the US Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don't fully understand what expiration (截止日期) dates, or “use-by dates”, actually mean.
Food dating was introduced in the 1970s because consumers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates were only supposed to indicate freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.
But the truth is that these dates aren't related to the risk of food poisoning or food borne illness, according to Time News. However, most customers misinterpreted use-by dates and related them to the safety of the food, and they still largely do now. Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after purchase even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry flavored drinks may lose their red color and biscuits may lose their crunch (松脆), but they are not harmful.
“It's a confusing subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jena Roberts, vice president of National Food Lab, a US food testing company. “Even in the food industry l have colleagues who get confused.”
This is why scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed following the use-by dates. “We want this to be clearly communicated so consumers are not misunderstanding the data and contributing to a lot of waste,” said Dana Gunders, a staff scientist with the NRDC.
But this won't be a mistake that is easy to correct since people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently—some are still safe to eat long after their use-by date while others are not.
As a result, food industry officials are now thinking of changing the use-by date to a date indicating when food is most likely to go bad.
    24. The use-by date was first intended to ____________.
    A. show the safety of food B. give a warning of food poisoning
    C. tell the freshness of food. D. indicate the relation between food and illness
    25. The underlined word “misinterpreted" in Paragraph 4 probably means ____________.
    A. made guesses about B. formed a wrong idea about
    C. made wrong use of D. took no notice of
    26. Which of the following is TRUE?
    A. Most customers understand what use-by dates mean.
    A. Most customers understand what use-by dates mean.
    B. “Use-by dates” have existed for more than 60 years.
    C. Biscuits can't be eaten when not as crunchy as they are bought.
    D. Even after their use-by dates pass, some foods are still safe to eat.
    27. Scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed together with the use-by dates because ____________.
    A. use-by dates are not helpful or reliable B. most consumers often misunderstand use-by dates
    C. more consumers get worried about food safety D. the quality level of different foods changes differently
    C
Most of us set a goal with energy and motivation. If it is achieved, we will feel we are on cloud nine. But in most cases, we can't reach our goals easily. Why do we often fail to hit the target? The answer lies in the disconnection between our brains' evaluation of rewards and the “get it done” realities that influence our behavior.
Our brains are reward-driven organs charged by neurotransmitters (神经递质) that fuel our drives and desires, and it's easy for us to get carried away in this chemical tsunami. So, when we set up a goal, our focus is on the reward. We picture getting the reward, and how we'll feel when we make it, which pushes us into action. But once we begin, we come face to face with what's really required to reach the goal and our focus shifts from reward to effort.
In other words, a focus on rewards fuels the pursuit, but a focus on effort takes over when the work starts. For example, getting up early to exercise for a new healthy lifestyle might seem like a good choice, but once your alarm goes off on a cold January morning, the rewards aren't enough to get you up and out of bed. When we face the reality of our choices, we realize the effort is too much and give up.
In fairness, though, we don't always have the best sense of how much effort something will require, especially if it's a goal we haven't pursued before. Getting better at setting goals has much to do with figuring this out and not letting ourselves forget the lesson.
Next time, begin our goal pursuits with as much realistic acknowledgment of the effort required as possible. Then, once we begin, refocus back to the reward and continue the efforts.
    28. What does the underlined phrase “on cloud nine” mean in paragraph 1?
    A. Scared. B. Overjoyed. C. Restless. D. Confused
    29. What may account for one's unachieved goal?
    A. Aiming high, working less. B. Speaking more, doing less.
    C. More efforts, less speed. D. More pains, more gains.
    30. What do people often fail to recognize in setting goals?
    A. Pains. B. Effort. C. Plan. D. Reward.
    31. What's the author's advice to us?
    A. Refocus back to the goal. B. Achieve your goal step by step.
    C. Accept failure and learn from the past. D. Set practical goals and work consistently.
    D
After growing up in the foster (寄养) care system, Shanté Elliott is working to help others transition (过渡,转变) out of it. Elliott is no stranger to the foster care system. She was forced to change schools and adapt to different homes over and over again before finally being adopted at the age of 13. Elliott became the first member of her family to graduate college, double majoring in literature and communication and earning a master's in education policy. Today she is pursuing her doctoral degree.
Elliott knows the challenges facing teenagers within the foster care system. “Often, teenagers are not viewed as children but as adults,” she recently told Reader's Digest. “Think about it—most families looking want to adopt an infant or a young child, so they can experience developmental milestones with the child.”
There are ways to help foster children without becoming a foster parent, but finding permanency is still what most foster youth need most. And for those who age out of the system without finding those forever homes, there are additional challenges to face. According to Youth.gov, these kids are at greater risk of homelessness, health problems, dropping out of school and legal issues, all of which can make succeeding in adulthood more difficult.
Elliott wants to see that stigma end. “We need to change the national dialogue around this in a way that highlights the needs of older children. All foster-involved children want consistent homes. Potential families need to realize this.”
It's a reality Elliott is passionate about helping others realize. “The need for protection, love, opportunity, and safety has no age limit. If more teenagers were adopted, youth would have more successful long-term outcomes after foster care.” That's something these older foster kids who found their forever homes can prove.
    32. How was Elliott's early adoptive life?
    A. Difficult. B. Busy. C. Strange. D. Successful.
    33. Why do foster families prefer infants or young children to teenagers?
    A. Because teenagers are too old to be fostered.
    B. Because infants lack personal experience and education.
    C. Because parents can become part of the children's growth process.
    D. Because they want to foster children without becoming foster parents.
    34. What is paragraph 3 mainly talking about?
    A. Homeless children will drop out of school.
    B. People don't want to become foster parents.
    C. There are some ways to help foster children.
    D. Children without forever homes may suffer in the future.
    35. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
    A. Few teenagers want to find forever foster homes.
    B. It's easy for teenagers to find forever foster homes.
    C. Teenagers are supposed to be offered permanent homes.
    D. Only teenagers need protection, love, opportunity and safety.

Do You Have a Positive Attitude?
Who would you rather hang around with? Someone who always acts in low spirits? Or someone who manages to see the good around him, even when things aren't always going great? 36
Having a positive attitude can help you in many ways. 37 Your friends will definitely appreciate you more if you see the silver lining rather than just the dark clouds!
38 The less pressure you feel, the better you will feel overall. So if you've been feeling tired, put on a happy face and you just might feel better soon.
But how can you have a positive attitude when life is hard? It's more than just turning life's lemons into lemonade. 39 But it's worth it.
A positive attitude doesn't mean ignoring life's troubles. It just means looking for the good in things, rather than being a pessimist and concentrating on the bad in things. Sometimes your attitude can make all the difference.
Identify (识别) those areas of your life that might not be going so well. 40 Focus on one at a time and think of ways you can find the positive in things.
    A. The answer is to have a positive attitude.
    B. Having a positive attitude can take some hard work.
    C. They are likely to make you have negative thoughts.
    D. Having a positive attitude can also reduce your stress level.
    E. If you have a positive attitude, you're more fun to be around.

I wasn't the most popular kid in my freshman year. I wasn't into fashion, preferred reading to sports, had difficulty talking to boys. Therefore, the first year of high school hadn't been kind to me. I had no close friends. I mostly kept to myself with my head buried in a book.
Ashley was very different from me. She was outspoken and fashionable. She was quite popular. These were qualities I knew nothing about. We had always been in the same classes throughout school, but had never talked much.
During summer school, we were both taking classes. The teacher paired us up on an assignment. We met at the library to work on the project and really got well. Of course, Ashley did most of the talking. When classes ended we continued to hang out.
I looked up to Ashley; she was all of the things I thought I wanted to be. I began listening to the music she listened to, wearing the clothes she wore. I quit reading and started watching the TV programs Ashley watched. I even tailored my sophomore (大二) year schedule to her interests. I decided to take art class even though I had really wanted to take theatre.
When we started school again, Ashley introduced me to her group of friends, the “cool girls.” She was the leader of their group. Finally I ft in. I followed them around, laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions. I didn't say much. I wouldn't want them to think that I was being rude by disagreeing. This continued for several months.
One day, I overheard Ashley and her friends were talking about me.
“She's such a loser,” one girl said to the group. “Ashley, she just follows you around trying to be you. She copies you; she doesn't have a personality of her own.”
Then Ashley replied, “I know, I wish she would leave us alone. We were in summer school together and now she thinks we're best friends or something.”

    Dear Lucy,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having difficulty in getting used to the new environment at your new school. Such problems are quite normal. Perhaps the following suggestions may be helpful.
Firstly, I think you may need to communicate with your classmates as much as possible. Only in this way will you get to know each other better. Secondly, it might be a good idea for you to take part in more activities, which are good for developing friendly relationship. Last but not least, faced with some tough problems, you might ask your teachers, who can usually offer you some sensible suggestions.
I sincerely hope my advice will be of some help to you. In short, I hope you will fit in the new environment and be happy every day.
    Best wishes!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    67. I stood rooted to the spot, feeling mortified and heartbroken. My hands were shaking, my face felt hot, and my eyes began to wet with uncontrollable tears. How had this happened? I thought we were friends. I didn’t know Ashley thought of me in that way. I couldn’t stay there and listen any more. I ran home and told my mother what had happened. She just held me while I sobbed for hours. After I calmed down, she patted my head and said gently, “Just be yourself and people will like you for who you are”
Hearing my mom’s advice, l decided I was going to stop crying and discover who I was. Ashley and I didn’t speak any more after that. Over the next month, I went through a lot of changes. I rediscovered reading, and developed my own opinions. I never again just followed the crowd. I dropped art class and joined theatre. I began making new friends who liked me for who I was. The friends I made in theatre are still my great friends to this day. When I look back, I consider it a gift. What they said about me was true. If I hadn’t been given the chance to realize it, I might have been too concerned with “fitting in” to experience some of the best times of my life.
