Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure(探险) in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named Adventure of the Year by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”

Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists how plants live in extreme(极端的) conditions.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me, what matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal(正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne(香槟) at midnight. How could I have never noticed? Every Christmas my mother enjoyed creating special memories and traditions for her family. Mum loved Christmas --- the shopping, baking, music, gifts… Her love for Christmas always encouraged my brother, sister and me to experience the joy and wonder of Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, Mum would put all our stockings under the beautiful Christmas tree. Later, in the middle of the night, Santa Claus filled the stocking with toys, oranges, apples and colorful candies. The next morning we excitedly opened our gifts, leaving our stockings.
In my twentieth, I went Christmas shopping with a friend. She began looking for a small gift to place in her mother’s stocking.
“You prepare a Christmas stocking for your mother?” I asked “Yes,” she replied. “Every year I fill a stocking with a gift and have it waiting for my mum on Christmas morning. I couldn’t bear(忍受) not having a Christmas stocking for my mother, especially since she prepares one for everyone else.”
That was when I felt that my face turned red. I realized my mother hadn’t had a Christmas stocking for as long as I could remember. And, even worse, no one had noticed her stocking was missing.
My sister and I decided to start a tradition of our own that year. Excited, we bought candies, socks and an orange. We placed them in a small, red stocking. On Christmas morning, we secretly put it under the tree while Mum was busy preparing breakfast.
We couldn’t wait to see Mum’s reaction(反应). She passed out everyone’s stockings and then noticed an extra one.
She picked up the sticking and read the note, “To Betty Ann --- Love Santa.”
Surprise crossed her face. “ ▲ ” We smiled and nodded.
“It’s been so long… since I last had a Christmas stocking,” she said. “Thank you.” We had never thought a stocking would bring tears to her eyes.
Though I don’t remember what gifts I received that year, I’ve never forgotten how excited my mother was to receive a small, red stocking. Seeing her reaction was the most valuable gift of all. And once again, she taught me about the joy and wonder of Christmas --- it’s better to give than to receive.
62. What does the underlined word “tradition” refer to?
A. Giving gifts to others. B. Buying gifts for ourselves.
C. Preparing a gift for our mother. D. Finding the joy and wonder of Christmas.
63. Which of the following sentences can be put in the “ ▲ ”?
A. What’s in it? B. Is this stocking yours?
C. Who lost the stocking? D. Is this stocking really for me?
64. Which of the following can be the BEST title for the passage?
A. A Different Gift B. Missing Stocking Is “Back”
C. A Special Reaction D. Mum’s Love for Christmas
65. What’s the writer’s purpose of sharing the story with us?
A. To encourage us to learn to give. B. To show us special ways to celebrate Christmas.
C. To tell us to care for our family. D. To advise us to spend Christmas with our family.

“As soon as I get the job, I’ll be able to leave my hometown and be free from my father’s orders,” Mike thought to himself on his way to a job interview. When Mike arrived at the office, he noticed that the door was open and that the latch(门闩) was out. Mike put the latch back properly, closed the door and entered the office.
On his way upstairs to the interview room, he noticed that the lights on the stair way were on, though it was very bright. He remembered his father’s order, “Turn the lights off!” So he turned off the lights.
As he entered the hall nervously and stepped on the “Welcome” mat(垫) near the door, he noticed that the mat was upside down. Mike remembered his dad’s voice again and he set the mat right.
Finally, Mike walked into the interview room and stood before the interviewers. After he introduced himself, one of the interviewers asked, “When can you start to work?”
“Is this a trick question or is this a signal that l have been offered the job?” Mike thought to himself. As Mike was thinking how to reply, the man continued, “We don’t ask anyone any question here. We watch everyone through cameras in this building. You are the only one who has passed our test today. That’s why we’ve decided to choose you for this job.”

86. Dear Paul,
There are many traditional festivals in China. My Favorite Chinese Traditional Festival is Mid-autumn Festival and it usually comes on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar year. On the festival we usually go back home from other cities or places and have a big dinner with the whole family. After dinner, we often eat mooncakes, watch the full moon and talk with each other happily.
I like Mid-autumn Festival best not only because I like the delicious mooncakes but also because it's a family get-together time. I really enjoy the love among the family members.
To learn Chinese, we should insist on communicating with others, because the function of language is to express. The more you practice, the better your Chinese will be. And to write more, a good memory is better than a bad pen.
Yours,
David
