The social media trap of comparing yourself to others can lead to feelings of confusion and jealousy. That was certainly true for Lizzie Velasquez. "I will look at everyone's photos and feel horrible about myself," Velasquez says. "So I have made a rule for myself. If I'm on social media, when I start feeling like I'm falling down the rabbit hole of comparison, I have to stop."
Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her "The World's Ugliest Woman" became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. "I suffered from a rare disease which doesn't allow me to gain weight and also affects my eyes, my bones and my heart," explains Velasquez.
Growing up, Velasquez said she lived in two different worlds. At home, her family treated her just like everyone else. Her parents raised her to appreciate herself. But that got harder when she started school. “I didn't become aware of it until I started kindergarten, because I was entering this other world where I had to face the reality," says Velasquez.
As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the YouTube video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation. Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. “I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez.
    24. Where did Velasquez's teenage pressure mainly come from?
    A. Her tense relationships with her parents. B. Others' criticism of her appearance.
    C. Others' concern about her disease. D. Her popularity on social media.
    25. How can we describe Lizzie Velasquez?
    A. Brave and inspiring. B. Talented and confident.
    C. Sociable and popular. D. Caring and warm-hearted.
    26. What did Velasquez do to fight online bullying?
    A. Avoid using social media for a while.
    B. Call on people to talk directly with the bullies.
    C. Encourage the young to improve their taste in beauty.
    D. Speak out against the behavior by sharing her experiences.
    27. What does the author mainly tell us in the text?
    A. The negative effects of online bullying.
    B. A girl's message about beauty and happiness.
    C. The public's attitude to online bullying among teenagers.
    D. A story of turning pain into power against online bullying.

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing masks. What a hassle! And it's tough to take them off in a short while and it annoys me a lot.
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology(E& T)reported. What's the secret? It's all about your eyes. Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same—even if we put on weight. Another company, Geneva-based Tech 5, has also been working on this kind of software. Another Japan based NEC Corp claims an surprising 99.9 percent accuracy rate when identifying people with masks.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It's about public safety. For example, you don't need to present an ID card, which can be lost or stolen. It also means that viruses aren't spread by touching things, said NEC's Shinya Takeshima. “Touchless verification(验证)has become extremely important due to the coronavirus," he said to Reuters. “We hope to contribute to safety and peace of mind." More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime. “It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang's vice president. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.
Huang admits one big weakness of this cutting-edge technology: It fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost," Huang said to E&T.
    28. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A. A trouble. B. A mistake. C. A guideline. D. A habit.
    29. The facial recognition software mainly depends on to identify people with masks.
    A. the forehead. B. the eye region. C. the shape of faces. D. the facial expressions.
    30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The future of facial recognition technology.
    B. Different types of facial recognition software.
    C. The advantages of facial recognition technology.
    D. The problems with current facial recognition technology.
    31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. The new technology cannot keep key facial information.
    B. Huang has a negative attitude toward the new technology.
    C. It is necessary to make improvements in the new technology.
    D. The new technology doesn't work when people wear sunglasses.
    D
Music can really affect your well-being, learning, quality of life, and even happiness. The fact that music can make a difficult task more tolerable may be why students often choose to listen to it while doing their homework. But is listening to music the smart choice for students who want to improve their learning? A new study suggests that for some students, listening to music is a wise strategy, but for others, it isn't. The effect of music on cognitive(认知的)function appears to depend partly on your personality—specifically, on your need for external stimulation(刺激).
Researchers not only assessed listeners' personality but also changed the difficulty of the task and the complexity of the music. Participants first completed a personality test used to determine the need for external stimulation. Then, they engaged in an easy cognitive task(searching for the letter A in lists of words)and a more challenging one(remembering word pairs)in order. Participants finished both tasks under one of two sound conditions:(1)no music, (2)with music.
The data suggest that for those with a high need of external stimulation, on the simple task of finding A's, the cores for the music condition were significantly worse than those for the silent condition. On the complex task of learning word pairs, their performance was worse whenever music was played. For those with a low need of external stimulation, however, on the simple task, such participants' scores for the music condition were much better than those for the silent condition. On the complex task of learning word pairs, the participants showed a small but reliable benefit when listening to music.
According to the study, there are individual differences in the impact of music on cognitive function. Students who are easily bored and who seek out stimulation should be cautious of adding music to the mix. On the other hand, students with a low need for stimulation may benefit significantly from the presence of music.
With the right personality, the right music and the right task, the presence of music may significantly improve cognitive functioning. Given the benefits of music, subscription to Spotify will be rewarding!
    32. What can we learn about the study in paragraph 2?
    A. It only involved the participants' response to music.
    B. Participants completed two tasks when composing songs.
    C. The difficulty of the two tasks decreased in the experiment.
    D. Participants were grouped by their need for external stimulation.
    33. What can we infer from the result of the research?
    A. The complexity of tasks might reduce the benefit of music.
    B. Students should listen to music when performing complex tasks.
    C. Students with less external stimulation perform badly with music.
    D. The presence of music benefits students who seek for external stimulation.
    34. What might the underlined word “Spotify" be?
    A. A travel guide. B. A psychology journal.
    C. A music platform. D. A personality test.
    35. What could be the best title for the article?
    A. Why is music essential in your study?
    B. Is music beneficial to your personality?
    C. How can music affect your external stimulation?
    D. Does music promote your cognitive performance?
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ponds(池塘)are a common sight. There are different kinds of ponds. 36 Like other kinds of ponds, they can add beauty to a garden or a landscape. The difference is that they're powered by solar energy.
A great pond usually needs an energy source to power up a pump and lights. Without a pump, a pond may hardly receive new clean water. 37 A solar-powered pump helps maintain healthy water quality and enables the addition of fish, if desired.
No solar garden pond would be complete without solar-powered lights. They are powered by a free, renewable energy source. This allows us a green life. 38 Strategic placement of lights around a pond will result in a beautiful appearance, both during the day and at night.
39 The solar pump and lights need to get energy from the sun. Placing a pond in direct sunlight increases the growth of algae(藻)in summer. However, placing it in the shade or partial shade may not produce enough solar energy to keep pumps and lights running.
If you've decided to create such a pond, choose a suitable location for your pond, and consider buying proper solar accessories according to your pond's location, size and so on. If possible, you can ask professionals for suggestions. 40
    A. There are many ways to live a green life.
    B. The need for inconvenient wiring can be avoided as well.
    C. Nowadays, there's a growing interest in solar garden ponds.
    D. Using solar energy for such ponds is not without limitations.
    E. That is why clean water is key to the survival of human beings.
    F. Through your efforts, you are sure to get a beautiful and efficient one in the end.
    G. The pond may become dirty and smell bad with a lot of mosquitoes flying around.

    M: Ah…Let's just climb. It's more fun, I think.
W: Okay. Let's go. Wish we could make it.
    Text 8
W: Mr. Atkins, would you please tell the court what you were doing when the accident happened and what you saw?
M: Yes. I was driving home from work. It was about 5:15 p. m. and there was a blue car in front of me. We were both driving along the Harbor Road when a small white Ford suddenly shot out of a side road. It shot right in front of the blue car. The driver in the blue car tried to stop, but it was impossible. The blue car ran into the white Ford.
W: I see. Now, how fast was the blue car in front of you going when the accident happened?
M: 30 miles an hour. Certainly no more than that.
W: And the white Ford shot out of the road without any warning?
    M: Yes, that's right.
    W: Thank you, Mr. Atkins.
    Text 9
M: Oh, hello. I'm Jack. This is the Law Students Association, right?
W: Yes, that's right. I'm Mary, President of the Association. Are you interested in joining?
M: Maybe. What year are you in?
    W: The fourth year.
M: I'm in the first year. I'm not sure if I'll survive even into the second year.
W: I'm sure you'll make it just fine. It does seem a bit worrying at the beginning, but it gets easier. Trust me.
M: That's hard to imagine. So, do I have to pay to join the association?
W: Well, there's an annual membership fee of 10 pounds, or you can get four-year membership for 35 pounds.
M: Mm, what activities do you have?
W: We have guest speakers, talking about various topics. There's a meeting on the first Tuesday of every month.
M: That sounds great. I'd love to hear about their experience. But my timetable is so full already. I don't think I have enough time to go to the meetings. Any other activities?
W: Well, we offer some peer coaching.
M: What's that? Sounds like you' re mixing study and sport.
W: Not in that way. Peer coaching is when other students help you if you' re having problems with your study. Usually, we get the senior students- the third or fourth years-to do it.
    M: I see.

    导语:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍现代人,尤其是儿童的健康饮食问题。
    第一处:are→is 主谓一致误用。谓语动词对应的主语是One of the most important things,故系动词用单数is。
feel attracted to fast-food restaurants 意为喜爱快餐店,故去掉in。
    第八处:They influenced中间加are。动词语态误用。这里指的是他们被广告影响,故用被动。
    第九处:because→why状语从句误用。前句是(因为)受广告影响,是这就是为什么他们中的许多人现在遭受饮食失调。这里应该用why引导结果状语从句。

As our society develops, we spend a lot on each field to make our life better than ever, such as space exploration. Given the fact that our resources are limited, more and more people begin to think about whether space exploration is a waste of money and energy. In my opinion, space exploration is of great significance and it should be considered first.
The reasons why I think so are as follows. Firstly, space exploration can display the national strength and its scientific achievements, which can boost the people's confidence. What's more, space exploration enables us to find much more resources in space, which can be used widely in the development of a country. Finally, international cooperation is required in space exploration where scientists and astronauts should work together on the mission and it in turn helps to build up a harmonious world.
In conclusion, space exploration can bring about more benefits to mankind and it should be regarded as the priority in the development of our society.
