Caroline Solomon was on her high school's swim team. But at times she couldn't go into the river
near her home. It was simply too polluted. “I decided I wanted to do something about it,” She recalls.
So she studied environmental science and public policy at Harvard University. Later, she went to
graduate school. Some of her classes could be challenging, though, since she couldn't hear her teachers.
“I've been deaf since I was 15 months old," Solomon notes.
Today she teaches biology at Gallaudet University. She has no trouble communicating with her
students. They, too, are primarily deaf or hard of hearing. That's why all classes at Gallaudet University
are taught in American Sign Language. And outside the classroom, Solomon enjoys hiking, biking and
other outdoor activities with her family.
Her research takes her to the Anacostia River. “It's very close to Gallaudet University, and I easily
bring my students there, ” she says. Water running through local forests and marshes(沼泽) drains into
this river—so does water running off urban streets, golf courses and industrial sites. Thus, not
surprisingly, this river has developed a reputation(名声) for being quite polluted.
Solomon has been focusing on how pollutants affect tiny organisms that form the base of the
river's food web. “I'm now looking at the cyanobacteria(蓝藻) population,” she says, “to see what types
are there.” Also known as blue-green algae, these potentially poisonous organisms can grow out of
control if they're fed by too many nutrients. And the fertilizers in rainwater running off lawns, fields
and other sites can fuel their runaway growth.
Solomon wants to see more students who are deaf or have other disabilities make contributions to
environmental science and other fields. And she often says, “If I can do it , you can do it.”
    24. What made Caroline Solomon decide to study environmental science in college?
    A. Her desire to save a polluted river. B. The difficulty she met on the swim team.
    C. The challenge from her physical disability. D. Her inability to swim in a river near her home.
    高一英语 第 3 页(共 8 页)

    25. What does Solomon usually do in her spare time?
    A. She relaxes at home.
    B. She is still busy with her work.
    C. She takes an active part in outdoor activities.
    D. She teaches deaf children to learn sign language.
    26. What does the underlined “it" in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Doing research into the environment. B. Majoring in environmental science.
    C. Overcoming disabilities. D. Making a difference.
    27. What does the author mainly intend to tell us by telling Solomon's story?
    A. Environmental issues are urgent to deal with.
    B. Everyone has a duty to protect the environment.
    C. Disabilities can't prevent someone achieving greatness.
    D. Science should be intended to improve human life.

More than 2milion US teenagers have suffered a serious bout(发作) of depression in the past
year, according to a federal government survey released on Tuesday.
On average, 8.5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 described having had a major depressive
episode in the previous year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported.
But there were “striking differences” by sex, with 12.7 percent of girls and 4.6 percent of boys
    affected.
Depression is the leading cause of suicide, which in turn is the third leading cause of death for
15-to 24-year- old in the United States.
“The data showed that rates of major depressive experiences among youths aged 12 to 17
generally increased with increasing age,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers at SAMHSA and RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina,
prepared the report using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
More than 67,700 youths aged 12 to 17 answered questions about mood and depression. They
were also asked to rate how depression affected them using the Sheechan Disability Scale(残疾量表),
which measures impact on family, friends, chores at home, work and school.
Researchers defined a major depressive episode as two weeks or longer of depressed mood or loss
of interest or pleasure, and at least four other symptoms(症状) such as problems with sleep, energy,
    concentration or self-image.
Nearly half of the teenagers who had major depression said it severely damaged their ability to
function in at least one of the areas on the disability scale.
“Fortunately, depression responds very well to early intervention and treatment, ” SAMHSA
administrator Terry Cline said in a statement.
    28. What does the underlined word “episode” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Experiment. B. Experience. C. Expression. D. Feeling.
    29. What can be inferred from the survey?

    C. The students surveyed were aged between 12 and 27.
    D. Girl students were more likely to get into depression than boys.

Music streaming platforms(平台) such as Spotify and Apple Music have completely changed how
people listen to music nowadays. By paying very affordable prices, people can access music very easily.
However, while these platforms may provide benefits for some artists, up-and-coming artists are being
left behind because they only focus on big names and creating profits.
Because of COVID-19, musicians have not been able to tour or perform live in many countries,
which contributes to a large part of their income. In a YouTube interview, up-and-coming Texas artist
Mobey mentioned that “The majority of my income comes from playing live shows. Usually that
means around 50%-70% of what we expect to make in a year”. With these factors, small artists are
finding it increasingly difficult to make it in the industry due to the lack of investment(投资) into new
    talent.
Small artists on Spotify and Apple Music can expect to make little to nothing. An artist on Spotify
can expect to earn an average of $0.003 per stream or around $3 per 1,000 streams for one of their
songs. On Apple Music, artists can expect to make a little more with an average of $0.01 per stream, or
around $10 with 1,000 streams. Even if they could hit around 1,000 streams, they have to pay music
distribution(分发) platforms needed for their music to be shown on the streaming platforms such as
DistroKid, whose cheapest plan is $20.
A new artist would find it very difficult to promote their music outside of their social media
accounts which may not even have a large amount of followers. They probably cannot get large
amounts of streams on their music since it is not being promoted due to the lack of exposure(宣传) they
    have on social media.
With the takeover of music streaming platforms, many artists are finding it increasingly difficult to
make a sustainable(可持续的) living from their love for music. A simple way these platforms can
enable new artists to keep making music is to increase their payouts per stream for their music.
Hopefully the music streaming industry will make similar changes to improve the situation of their
    artists.
    32. What is the problem with music streaming platforms?
    A. They ignore small artists. B. They are not user-friendly.
    C. They are very difficult to manage. D. They limit the number of small artists’ songs.
    33. What do artists Mobey’s words center on?
    A. His lack of investment. B. His total income in a year.
    C. The main source of his income. D. The reason for his fewer live shows.
    34. What do the figures in paragraph 3 show ?
    A. How a music streaming platform works.
    B. Small artists’ hope for music streaming platforms.
    C. Small artists’ dislike for music streaming platforms.
    D. Why small artists earn little on music streaming platforms.
    高一英语 第 5 页(共 8 页)

    35. What is the best tittle for the text?
    A. Music streaming platforms: Do they really put profits first?
    B. Music streaming platforms: Are they a chance or challenge to artists?
    C. Music streaming platforms: Have they harmed the industry for artists
    D. Music streaming platforms: Could they offer music lovers better services?

Forty years had passed since the group of friends parted. During these years, they lost touch. Their
lives got so busy that they never got to update each other when they moved. However, they
remembered their appointment (约定). On May 30 forty years ago, they promised to meet at 10 am on
the beach on the same day forty years later.
Forty years ago, Joseph, Kyle, Sam, and Harry went their separate ways after graduation. Joseph
moved to Spain, Sam went to study in Canada, Harry moved with his family to Mexico, and Kyle
stayed in California and studied at the University of California.
When the 40-year mark came, they never forgot about the promise they made, and they all booked
flights to California from wherever they were.
Kyle was the first to arrive, and he sat on one of the benches (长椅) while waiting for his friends.
Soon after, Harry arrived, walking along the seashore (海岸). He was excited to be there, having
    traveled from Mexico.
“It's so good to see you, brother,” he said immediately as he saw Kyle, giving Kyle a big hug.
The two friends caught up with one another while waiting for the others. They talked about what
they did after high school, their families, and what they' d been up to in recent times.
About thirty minutes later, Sam arrived. His flight from Canada was delayed (推迟). Despite
nearing their 60s, they were so excited that they jumped for joy as they hugged one another.
“Do you think Joseph forgot about our promise?” Sam asked after they waited for an hour without
    him arriving.
“I don't think he would!” Harry concluded. So the three decided to stay there until nightfall to
ensure they didn't miss Joseph. When he didn't come, they fell silent, thinking something might have
    happened to him.
Harry decided to smoke a cigarette (香烟) while waiting. As he tried to light it, he accidentally
dropped his lighter, and when he bent down to get it, he saw a piece of paper under the bench that read,

Last Saturday morning, I attended a wonderful reading party at the City Library with my friends.
This is the first time that I’ve attended such an activity where I met a lot of people who also enjoy reading very much. During the party, every one shared his or her views on reading and recommended one book to the other reading-lovers. The organizers were so considered that they prepared tasty snacks for us.
What a wonderful experience it was! I really enjoyed myself at this amazing reading party.

    第二节:
“Sam, Harry, Kyle, it’s me, Joseph. I lost all of your addresses, so I couldn’t write you personally. I asked a friend of mine here to contact someone in California who could print this out for me and place it on the bench. I’m sorry I didn’t make it there. I have no money. I wish I were with you right now. This is my current address and you can write me. With love, Joseph.”
Harry, Sam, and Kyle were saddened by the letter. They decided to visit Joseph in Spain. When they found him, Joseph was surprised to see them. It turned out that Joseph had lived by himself all these years. Knowing this, Harry invited Joseph to go to Mexico with him. At first, Joseph was hesitant until he realized he had nothing to miss in Spain. The friends were all relieved. To celebrate their meeting, they made a tour of Spain together before leaving the country.
