Clang(哐啷), clang, clang! Mary Walton buried her head under her pillow(枕头). It was no use trying to sleep. In the 1880s,the sound of New York City’s Elevated (高架) Railway shook the whole apartment.
“Dad, why do the trains have to be so noisy?” “I don’t know, Mary,” her father replied, “ Maybe you can find a way to make the trains run quietly.”
So she went to the railway company to see what she could learn. But she heard that some of the top inventors in the country, even Thomas Edison himself, were trying to find a solution. If the great Thomas Edison hadn’t been able to find an answer, how could a girl like her?
However, Mary knew the solution was important. People needed to take trains to work, but they also needed calm, quiet, and good sleep! She began to ride trains during her spare time. Sometimes she walked under the high tracks, looking up to see how they were made. Watching and listening, Mary considered the problem.
One night Mary had to cover her ears with her pillow. "Maybe this will muffle the sound,” she thought. Suddenly she sat up and said, “That's it! I need a way to make the noise lower!” What about sand? If we put the he rails in sand and find a way to keep the sand together, it might work.” Mary spent many nights at the library. Finally she came up with a system to put the rails in sand that was contained in asphalt (沥青).
Mary sent her plan to the railway company. Weeks later, she was told her invention was accepted.

When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note----“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”----and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, I saw an old milk box in the countryside. I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
46. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer _______.
A. to show his magical power B. to pay for the delivery
C. to satisfy his curiosity D. to please his mother
47. What does “this” in the third paragraph refer to?
A. The milkman’s magic power. B. The milkman’s kindness to me.
C. The note to change an order. D. The home delivery service.
48. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?
A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was treated as a family member. D. He was fully trusted by the family.
49. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. B. It has been driven out of the market.
C. Its service is getting poor. D. It is forbidden by law.
50. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A. He missed the good old days. B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C. He missed it for his milk bottles. D. He planted flowers in it.

Eating a diet high in processed (加工的) food increases the risk of depression (沮丧抑郁), research suggests. What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team found.
Data on diet among 3, 500 middle-aged civil servants were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They split the participants (参与者) into two types of diet--those who ate a diet largely based on whole food, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains and high fat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic diseases, they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets.
Those who ate the most whole food had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least whole food. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed food.
Study author Dr Archana SinghManoux pointed out there was a chance the finding could be explained by a lifestyle factor they had not accounted for.
“There was a paper showing a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain, the likelihood (可能性) of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.”
Dr Andrew Mcculloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, "this study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health.”
He added people’s diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated (含饱合脂肪酸的) fats and sugars.
51. The text is mainly about _____.
A. the increasingly unhealthy diet of the UK population
B. the link between processed food and depression
C. the relationship between physical and mental heal
D. a healthy diet largely based on whole food
52. What do we know about the participants?
A. They are of different ages from young to old.
B. They have been eating a less healthy diet these years.
C. Most of them prefer whole food to processed food.
D. Those who ate whole food generally were happier in the long term.
53. What can we learn from what Dr Archana SinghManoux said?
A. It is difficult for most British people to have a Mediterranean diet.
B. The Mediterranean diet is the healthiest in the world.
C. Many studies have been done on the Mediterranean diet before.
D. The Mediterranean diet is not good for depression.
54. Dr Andrew McCulloch agrees that ______.
A. our diets are closely related to our mental health
B. the present study needs more facts and other information
C. the UK population will become ill in the near future
D. more saturated fats and sugars should be taken in
55. Why might the author have written this text?
A. To tell people what a healthy diet actually is.
B. To prove people's diets are increasingly unhealthy.
C. To encourage people to cut down processed food.
D. To introduce some experts on the research team.

六、阅读表达 (共5题,每题2分,共10分)
Most people think that making a film is exciting. In fact, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. Earlier this year, I worked in a new film. It was about a bomb threat on a big British ship. Two hundred people were needed to act as the passengers in the film. I was one of them.
Before we left, we were wanted to bring some warm clothes. These were necessary because the ship was going to spend the whole 16 days sailing in bad weather.
Then the day came and we sailed out of Dover. The boat had on board the film crew the director, the actors and actresses including Brinksley Meers, who acted the leading role, and us-200 amateur (业余的) extras (群众演员).
People came for different purposes. Some wanted to meet Brinksley Meers in person. Others were curious to see how a film was made. A housewife with her three children came for free holiday and a bit of adventure.
During the navigation, a lot of people were very seasick. And although the work was very interesting, it was also very hard. We often worked all day on one scene performing it again and again under the hot lights. In the evenings, there were drink in the bar, but most people were so tired that they went to bed early. The next day often began at 6: 30 in the morning, sometimes with breakfast being filmed.
When the ship finally returned to port, most people had enjoyed the trip, but were also so tired that they at least needed a week's holiday.
