Welcome to senior high. Your great adventure is about to begin. It is a time when you can challenge yourself to improve. Some senior high students are invited to share their secrets and advice.
    Wang Zanduo, 17, Hebei
One of the most important things for seniors is to learn to get along with others. We all know nobody is perfect. Getting along with others takes patience and understanding. You should always respect others’ differences and make new friends with people sharing common interests. It’s also a time to learn to keep your temper (脾气) under control. A hot temper cannot solve any problems, but patience can.
    Sun Xiuyuan, 16, Shandong
To enjoy your high school life, I would say that you don’t want to stress yourself out. Senior years provide you with more chances to explore who you are and what you want to do in the future. I really enjoy doing extracurricular activities and community service. My experiences of joining a singing club and a computer programming club, as well as volunteering, have encouraged me to search for the unknown and find more fun and warmth in the world. Try things you are not familiar with, and remember, no matter what your talents are, you can always go beyond yourself.
    Zhao Yuebei, 18, Hainan
It’s true that senior year means a lot more work. Don’t worry! A very useful study method is the mind map to help organize information. Creating your own system of knowledge is important. It plays a key role especially in the review stage of the final year. You can start by writing down a key concept (概念) in the center of a page, then add related points and ideas around it. I have benefited a lot from this method since it pushes me to review and organize all my knowledge.
    21. According to Wang Zanduo, how can you get along well with others?
    A. Making efforts to become perfect.
    B. Being patient and understanding.
    C. Trying to be different from others.
    D. Developing the same interest as others.
    22. What does Sun Xiuyuan advise you to do?
    A. To put yourself under no stress. B. To do what you want to.
    C. To become a helpful volunteer. D. To try some new things.
    23. What is Zhao Yuebei talking about?
    A. Learning strategies. B. Some past experiences.
    C. System of knowledge. D. High school’s final year.

    B
I can’t remember when my dog finally stopped crying in fear at its top voice. For months after we took her home from a nearby rescue organization, Millie cried all the time. If you only walked past her, a sound would erupt that could freeze your blood.
When we adopted Millie in August of 2019 she was mentally hurt to a serious degree. Obviously, she was afraid of everything around her. A gentle touch from a little kid or the friendly smell of a small dog could make this full-grown dog frightened to death. The lights of a car would send her into great fear. Many sights and sounds terrified Millie so much that once she even couldn’t go to sleep in 36 hours.
But recently we’ve come to realize that we might have turned Millie into a naughty(淘气的) kid. Early on, trying to make her believe that the world contains good things, my husband started saving her the last mouth of his bread. This dog who had to be tricked (哄骗)into eating now knows exactly when the clock strikes five and then she follows me around and reaches his paws to me until I feed her. This dog who feared all strangers now greets guests with a kind of enthusiasm that not all guests actually welcome.
People who haven’t seen her for a while all say that, “This is not the same dog I met last time.” But she is the same dog. She has just become a happier, braver dog. Even now, Millie is not yet the dog she is in the process of becoming. But the warmth of the world has turned him into a better self.
    24. Why does the author write the passage?
    A. To encourage us to raise a dog. B. To teach us ways to train a dog.
    C. To show us the warmth of the world. D. To share her story about a dog.
    25. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. To take a suggestion. B. To show a particular attitude.
    C. To accept as a family member. D. To follow as a tradition.
    26. “This is not the same dog I met last time.” in the last paragraph means ___________
    A. People forget what Millie looked like.
    B. Millie’s personality has changed a lot.
    C. The author is raising another dog.
    D. Millie has become the best dog as expected.
    27. How does the writer develop the passage?
    A. By giving reasons. B. By explaining meanings.
    C. By listing figures. D. By showing contrast.

    C
Australia is no stranger to wildfires. The hot and dry weather leads to fires in the wild now and then. However, one that started in September 2019 continued to burn till July 2020, and it might not be natural at all. The fire burned 73,000 square kilometers of land, killing at least 28 people and burning up more than 3,000 homes, reported the Telegraph. Scientists said that man-made climate change played a role in the fire’s creation and duration(持续时间).
According to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, the country’s temperatures have risen by more than 1℃ since 1920. The spring of 2019 was Australia’s driest in 120 years. In December, the country saw its hottest day ever, with an average temperature of 41.9 ℃.
“Due to evaporation(蒸发)in warmer temperatures, the plants and the soils dry out more quickly,” Stefan Rahmstorf, an author of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fourth Assessment Report, told Times.
Even worse, “Wildfires like this might become ‘normal conditions’ in the future,” the researchers at Britain Bureau of Meteorology said to BBC, “We have looked at 57 research papers published since 2013, which examined the relationship between climate change and the risk of wildfires, and have found that the link between the two has already been observed in many parts of the world, including the western US, Canada, southern Europe, and even Siberia.”
“These are effects we are seeing for 1℃ of global climate change. The effects will get worse if we don’t do something with the world’s climate,” Corinne Le Quere, a professor from the University of East Anglia in Britain, told the BBC. “What we are seeing in Australia is not the ‘new normal’. It’s a sign to worse effects. We must take some effective action now. We can’t wait any longer.”
    28. From Paragraph 1, what do we know about the wildfire starting last September?
    A. It followed the law of nature. B. It is still burning now.
    C. It caused the greatest damage. D. It was related to man.
    29. What did the researchers at Britain Bureau of Meteorology mean?
    A. More wildfires are likely to break out in the future.
    B. Any climate change will increase the risk of wildfires.
    C. Australia is the only country that suffers from wildfires.
    D. Wildfires will not break out in cold countries or areas.
    30. What did Corinne Le Quere tell people?
    A. The climate in Australia in the future. B. Solutions to stopping climate change.
    C. Necessity of fighting climate change. D. Worse effects of global climate change.
    31. What would probably be talked about if the writer continued to write?
    A. The effective action we can take.
    B. Other serious wildfires in Australia.
    C. Other scientists’ views on global warming.
    D. More findings about climate change.

Last summer, more than 12,000 fans packed London’s Wembley Arena. Thousands more watched online. They shouted and cheered. Were they watching soccer? No, they were watching esports, or competitive PC gaming. Millions of people in Britain play PC games for fun. Some of them have become professionals, playing games as their full-time job. The prize at the Wembley event came to 3 million pounds.
But are esports really sports? Are the players athletes? It’s easy to say, “No way.” After all, professional gamers don’t need to run, jump or throw a ball. At the moment, Britain government considers esports as a kind of game, not as a sport.
It’s not easy being a professional gamer, though. They practice for 10 or more hours a day, five or six days a week. They do exercises like typing something and then trying to type it faster and faster. They also study videos of other players and plan ways to beat them.
Many people who play games also enjoy watching them. They often watch games on video sites like Twitch and YouTube, and in Britain there’s even a TV program showing esports 24 hours a day. Matches can be exciting to watch. Just like in other sports, there are close games, last-minute victories and creative strategies. Sometimes online viewers can interact with the players through messaging.
But many people think that esports are sports. They say that players do need physical skills, especially hand-eye working together, quick reaction, accuracy(精准性) and timing. If darts and snooker are considered as sports, then perhaps esports should be too. In fact, the governments of China and South Korea do consider esports as sports, and gamers will soon be able to compete for medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
Even if esports are not important and popular or regarded as a sport in your country or place at the moment, they probably will be soon.
    32. What does Paragraph 1 show us?
    A. The similarities of esports and soccer.
    B. The benefits esports bring to people.
    C. The popularity of esports in Britain.
    D. The exciting competition of esports.
    33. Why do some people think esports are sports?
    A. Players need to type at a fast speed in esports.
    B. The esports matches are as exciting as other sports.
    C. The viewers can communicate with players in a way.
    D. Players need kinds of physical skills in esports.
    34. How does the writer feel about the development of esports?
    A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
    35. Which is the best title of the passage?
    A. Esports: Are They Sports Or Not? B. Esports: Can We Benefit From Them?
    C. Esports: Are You a Fan of Them? D. Esports: Are They a Good Job Choice?

Many people travel to enrich and enjoy themselves. As a Persian writer said:“Travel
brings power and love back into your life.” However, their travel methods may be different each year. 36 . Let’s take a look.
    Traveling alone
Traditionally, travel seems to be a group activity to have fun together and avoid loneliness. But traveling alone has become popular, especially among young people.
Traveling on your own means that you are the boss of everything, choosing wherever you want to go, whatever you eat and whenever you go out. For some people, it also offers a chance to find themselves a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything. 37 . “You have to face new things and it pushes you out of your comfort zone,” a traveler from the US, told Travel Pulse.
    Virtual(虚拟的)reality
World travel can be expensive. But virtual reality, or VR is giving more possibilities to travel for little cost. With ever-improving headsets(头戴式视读器), smartphones and Wi-Fi connections, people can have a 360-degree experience of museums, theme parks and historical places. 38 or view a sea horse giving birth to babies before their eyes in a museum with just a headset on.
    39
There are always some “must-see” places anywhere you travel. But traveling in such places always brings problems like overcrowding and noise. In order to have a better travel experience, many tend to visit less famous places. With less transportation and fewer things to do, hitting up a little town gets people to slow down and notice the little things. 40 .

    B. But traveling in a completely foreign land alone can be challenging
    C. Here are some top choices for this year

    How to become self-confident
I used to lack self-confidence. I often believed that I couldn’t do anything well. I even didn’t dare to answer questions in class.
Then I read an article about how to become self-confident. I had never thought two pages of words could make such a difference. I realized that everyone had weaknesses, and I had to accept what I was not good at. After that, instead of keeping silent, I started to answer questions in the class. I even took an extra-curricular course to practice giving speeches in public. Besides, I joined two school clubs and made several friends there. Later, I found myself more and more confident.
Now, by having self-confidence, I feel happier and more positive in life.

    A
    21. B. 细节题。根据Wang Zanduo, 17, Hebei的建议部分的第三句“Getting along with others takes patience and understanding. ”可知,答案为B。
    22. D. 细节题。根据Sun Xiuyuan, 16, Shandong的建议部分的最后一句“Try things you are not familiar with, and remember, no matter what your talents are, you can always go beyond yourself.”
    23. A. 细节题。根据Zhao Yuebei, 18, Hainan的建议的内容,尤其第三句“A very useful study method is the mind map to help organize information.
    26. B. 推断题。由最后一段的“But she is the same dog. She has just become a happier, braver dog.”
    28. D. 细节题。根据第一段最后一句“Scientists said that man-made climate change played a role in the fire’s creation and duration (持续时间).”
    29. A. 推断题。根据第四段第一句“Wildfires like this might become ‘normal conditions’ in the future”可知,normal conditions的意思是“常态”,也就是很有可能会有更多的野火发生,这将会是一种常态。根据“We have looked at 57 research papers published since 2013, which examined the relationship between climate change and the risk of wildfires, and have found that the link between the two has already been observed in many parts of the world”可知,两者之间存在关系,但并不是说任何气候变化都将增加野火发生的风险,因此B项错误。
    31. A. 推断题。根据最后一段的最后两句“We must take some effective action now. We can’t wait any longer.”
第一段作者用到了很多数字:more than 12,000、Thousands more、Millions of、Some of them、3 million pounds,主要用于描述了电子竞技在英国有多么地受欢迎。
    33. D. 细节题。根据第五段第二句“They say that players do need physical skills, especially hand-eye working together, quick reaction, accuracy(精准性) and timing. ”可知答案为D项。
    34. B. 推断题。根据全文最后一段“Even if esports are not important and popular in your country or place at the moment, they probably will be soon.”可知。
    37. B. 下一句“You have to face new things and it pushes you out of your comfort zone”的内容是对选项中challenging的具体解释。
    38. G. 选项中的“With these technologies”与上句中的“ever-improving headsets(头戴式视读器), smartphones and Wi-Fi connections”呼应,同时与后半句构成由or连接的完整的句子。
    40. F. 与前一句构成承接关系,尤其与“gets people to slow down and notice the little things”相呼应。
    46. A. 上文提到“she told me she worked at a nearby restaurant.”,因此可以看出她主要打交道的人是顾客,故选A项。
与全文最后一句中的“especially when someone is rude to her”呼应。
    51. A. 由后面的内容“by thinking they are probably having a bad day”可知,作者用这样的想法来安慰自己。
