    Chen missed seeing her talking t the birds. Week after week, Chen played alne in his ty-filled rm. The picture f Lan’s chatting with birds came t his mind again. Lking at Lan’s cin, Chen wndered what t d if she came back t sit in his shade. Shuld he charge her again, r shuld he give the cin back? Many mnths later, the summer sun returned, ht as ever. Chen std by his windw each Sunday, lking frward t Lan’s cming again.
    On the Sunday Lan appeared as expected. At the sight f her, Chen raced utside. Withut hesitatin, he reached int his pcket, pulled ut Lan’s cin,and handed it back. “I’m srry,” he said. “Yu didn’t need t pay me.” Lan was t surprised t believe it, s she asked in dubt, “This summer,yur shade belngs t everyne?” “Yes,” replied Chen. “Nw, please, call the birds dwn fr us. Let’s tell stries.” They began t play with birds tgether, cheerful laughter eching in the air.
