Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues (线索) found in a book when he wrote a children' story, Masquerade, in 1979. The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of "red herrings", or false clues, to mislead them.Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic (逻辑), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: "One of Six to Eight" under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII's six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth ₤3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.4. The underlined word "them" (paragraph 1 ) refers to________.A. red herrings                        B. treasure huntsC. Henry VIII's six wives                 D. readers of Masquerade5. What is the most important clue in the story to help Ken Roberts find the hare?  A. Two stone crosses in Ampthill.           B. Stevenson's Treasure Island.C. Katherine of Aragon.                    D. Williams' hometown.6. The stone crosses in Ampthill were built________.  A. to tell about what happened in 1773    B. to show respect for Henry VIII' s first wifeC. to serve as a roadsign in Ampthill Park   D. to inform people where the gold hare was7. Which of the following describes Roberts' logic in searching for the hare?a. Henry VIII' s six wives            b. Katherine's burial place at Kimboltonc. Williams' childhood in Ampthill     d. As time went on, people started to built structures for different functions such as sleeping, cooking and bathing. Architecture became a form of art that reflected the habits of the people it served. Some great forms of architecture can be found in the forest as tree houses, clay() houses, igloo(雪屋) houses, and so on. Each living structure is designed to meet the needs of the user—people. As people traveled and settled into different climates they had the need to change certain architectural functions. For example, in Italy, where it is warm, the houses often have a loggia(凉亭). But the French use a foyer(门廊)because of the extreme winters in France. Also materials that are readily available are a major influence on all forms of architecture. If a region has plenty of stones, they use stones. If there are plenty of trees, they use timber and so on. The architecture we enjoy today in popular cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles is a collective grouping of design solutions from all corners of the globe.Architects in the early days were called master builders because they were responsible for every phase of the building process. An architect had to be an artist, structural engineer, and builder. Artists such as painters would be employed by the architect to do painting in important structures such as churches and palaces.Today architects have fewer responsibilities, due to the complexities of buildings. Apart from architects, other experts are needed to take care of the mechanical systems, the electrical requirements, etc. Most people think hiring an architect is unreachable, but in truth there are plenty of available talents ready and able to design a home according to your needs. A great designer is able to design great architecture with any budget. Just seek and you will be pleased with all the possibilities.8.We can learn from the first paragraph that_____.most structures were built in caves in the early daystree houses were the most common structures in the early daysarchitecture could indicate people’s habitsstructure in the forest are not so popular9.What is a factor that influences the architecture in a certain place?Popularity.                B. Culture. C. Peoples’ experiences.        D.Available materials10.What does the writer think of hiring an architect? It is worth trying.                B. It will cost a lot of money.C. It is not easy to find a good architect.D.It is the best choice when you want to built a house.11. What is the passage mainly about ?Works of architects.            B. Different styles of architecture.C.Development of architecture.      D. Importance of architecture.                              D Staying positive through the cold season could be the best defence against getting sick, a new American study suggests. In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill.The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help ward off the common cold and other illnesses.“People with a positive emotional style may have different immune (免疫的)) responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, “And when they do get a cold, they may experience their illness as less severe.”Cohen and his colleagues had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional quality itself had the effect. For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality qualities, physical health and “emotional style”Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and hostile (敌意的) had a negative style. Afterwards, the researchers gave them nose drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus that causes flu-like symptoms. Over the next six days the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had. Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold. What’s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than what would be expected based on objective measures. In contrast, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.“We find that it’s really positive emotions that have the big effect”, Cohen said, “not the negative ones.”So can a bad-tempered person fight a cold by deciding to be happy?12. What does the underlined phrase “ward off” in paragraph 3 mean?A. Get close to.        B. Keep away from.  C. Get used to.   D. Go on with.13. What was the purpose of Cohen’s new study?A. To find effective ways to fight illnesses.B. To test people’s different immune responses to cold virus.C. To tell differences between happy people and unhappy people.D. To examine whether health was related to emotional styles.14. How did Cohen reach his conclusion?A. By comparing different experimental results.B. By asking the volunteers to complete a form.C. By collecting data among people with a cold.D. By observing the volunteers’ symptoms.15. What can we conclude from the text?A. Success is the twin of positive spirits.B. We get more by being more positive.C. The happier we are, the fewer colds we will suffer. D. Physical health is more important than mental health. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5, 满分12. 5分)People use colors to express their feelings and describe their world.    16    Let’s see if we can figure out where they originated.Black sheep of the familyThe phrase refers to a member of a family or a group who is in disgrace (失宠). It probably comes from the days when, in a group of sheep, the black ones were worth less than the white ones at market because their wool could not be dyed (染色) into different colors.   17   Green with envyWhen your friend shows up with the hottest new video game in town, you might feel this way.    18   It was the Greeks who connected it with sickness. They thought that when a person was ill or envious, his or her body produced too much bile (胆汁), giving his or her skin a greenish color.True blueIs your best friend “true blue”? No, this doesn’t refer to a dye job on his hair.    19    Back when all color dyes came from natural sources, such as berries and leaves, blue was the most difficult color to produce and often faded quickly. Finally, during the Middle Ages, an English town became famous for a blue dye that produced a nice, rich blue that didn’t fade after just a few washings. This reliable color became known as “true blue”.Royal purplePurple is a fairly popular color. But throughout history, it was reserved for royalty and important members of the church. Purple was once the most expensive dye in the world.    20   The resulting purple-colored cloth was costly, and only the richest people could afford to buy it.A. This made the black sheep an unwelcome member.B. Many color-related phrases are a common part of our speech.C. A person who was envious would make him look green.D. Almost everyone at some time or another has “the blues”.E. It means that he is honest, faithful, and reliable.F. The process of collecting the dye and processing it was long and complex.G. Writers such as Shakespeare used the color green to represent envy. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分) What is intelligence anyway? There lived the wise man that the young man was looking for. However, instead of finding the holy man,our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band is playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it. The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him.The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours’ time.“However, I want to ask you a favor,’’ he added, handing the boy a teaspoon,in which he poured two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill (溢出).The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.“So,” asked the wise man, "did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?”Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. From my point of view, you can choose to come to China after finishing your studies. For one reason, China's development over the past 30 years offers plenty of job opportunities for the young. What's more, what you are studying is badly needed in China nowadays. In fact, many big companies in our city are hoping to hire people like you.For another reason, China is a country with such different cultures and traditions from the West that many foreigners enjoy living and working here. The young man opened his eyes wide to explore the wonders. The beautiful scenery lit up his eyes and unfolded a brand-new world before him. As he walked to the wise man, the man asked him about the castle. He sighed,“Splendid”.Paragraph 2 :"But where are the drops of oil I gave you?" asked the wise man. He lowered his head and found that there was nothing left in his spoon, astonished and embarrassed. Now,could you tell me about your feelings?” The young man thought for a while and slowly replied, “The truth of happiness is holding our dreams tightly but never failing to watch the beautiful scenery around us.
