When I was a kid, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert. Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor(味道)to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat (款待) as fast as we could.
Once, though, when I was probably about 10 or 11, our grandpa came to visit us. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. In this particular situation, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish our ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, “Why would you want to finish first? If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have a competition to see who can finish last.” Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert.
Too often, kids want to scramble (争夺) for more, whether it’s more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit continues into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never develop the skill of valuing what we have. If we learn to recognize this problem and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their widely known dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them.
What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the chance to enjoy what’s in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more meaningful than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It’s a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to value it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.
4. The author’s grandfather advised her sister and her to_______.
A. stop eating ice cream B. learn something from their way of eating
C. stop the competition between them D. eat ice cream as slowly as possible
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s grandfather?
A. Humorous. B. Wise. C. Strict. D. Careful.
6. What advice does the author give us in the passage?
A. Value what you have. B. Keep longing for more.
C. Have a balanced diet. D. Save for the future.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The author learns a lot from her grandfather’s advice.
B. The author doesn’t like ice cream as much as before.
C. The author just starts to understand her grandfather.
D. The author longs for the days when they ate ice cream.

Did you know that Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old, and could not read until he was seven? His parents and teachers worried about his mental (大脑的) ability.
Beethoven's music teacher said about him, “As a composer (作曲家) he is hopeless.” What if this young boy had believed it?
When Thomas Edison was a young boy, his teachers said he was so stupid that he could never learn anything. He once said, “I remember I used to never be able to get along at school. I was always at the foot of my class ... My father thought I was stupid, and I almost decided that I was a stupid person.” What if young Thomas had believed what they said about him?
When the sculptor (雕刻家) Auguste Rodin was young, he had difficulty learning to read and write. Today, we may say he had a learning disability. His father said of him, “I have an idiot (白痴) for a son.” His uncle agreed. “He's uneducatable ,” he said. What if Rodin had doubted his ability?
Walt Disney was once fired by a newspaper editor because he was thought to have no “good ideas”. Enrico Caruso was told by one music teacher, “You can't sing. You have no voice at all.” And an editor told Louisa May Alcott that she was unable to write anything that would have popular attraction.
What if these people had listened and become discouraged? Where would our world be without the music of Beethoven, the art of Rodin or the ideas of Albert Einstein and Walt Disney? As Oscar Levant once said, “It's not what you are but what you don't become that hurts.”
You have great potential(潜力). When you believe in all you can be, rather than all you cannot become, you will find your place on earth.
8.How many successful people are mentioned as examples in the passage?
A.Six. B.Seven. C.Eight. D.Nine.
9.What can we learn from the passage ?
A.When he was young, Thomas Edison always got good grades at school.
B.Levant thought Louisa May Alcott couldn't write any popular works.
C.Only Auguste Rodin's uncle regarded him a boy of learning ability.
D.Both Enrico Caruso and Beethoven achieved their dreams in music.
10.What's the meaning of the underlined sentence “He's uneducatable”?
A.He is too stupid to be taught. B.He is very clever.
C.He is different. D.He is a late success.
11.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Working Hard for Success B.Having Dreams
C.Believing in Yourself D.Self -challenging

Have you ever wondered what wild animals do when no one is watching?
Low cost, dependable and small modern cameras offered a big help. Cameras placed in hard-to-reach places have shot everything from small desert cats to larger snow-lowing cats in the northern Rocky Mountains. Scientists have been able to document the “private” moments of wildlife with leading technology.
Grant Harris is a government biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his words, “there’s no doubt that these wild cameras are important tools to learn new information on wildlife.” Harris said some images help scientists see the influences of climate(气候)change.
Researchers with the Wyoming Migration Initiative, or WMI, are among those using wild cameras along with global positioning systems, or GPS. But WMI director Matthew Kauffman says as those devices(设备)are limited (有限的), so is the amount of information they can gather. However, cameras can be left in very wild areas for days, weeks or even months. They can provide information on how many animals are moving over a given period of time.
Putting those cameras in place requires careful planning. Wild video can show details about animal behavior. However, wild cameras have their problems too. Animals such as wolverines and bears sometimes attack(袭击) them. Scientists do not know if the attacks are the result of anger or interest. Also, the devices have become popular tools to help hunters look for animals. Some people argue that it is unfair to use the cameras that way.
Even with such problems, wild cameras are clearly an important scientific tool in researching wild animals.
12. What does the underlined word “document” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Remind B. Enrich. C . Produce. D. Record.
13. Which is a disadvantage of wild cameras?
A. They cannot be left in the wild over a long period.
B. They cannot be placed in hard-to-reach areas.
C. They provide limited information.
D. They might be stolen by people.
14. Why do some people argue against using wild cameras?
A. It is difficult to fix the cameras.
B. It helps hunters find animals easily.
C. It is hard to achieve careful planning.
D. It makes animals interested in the cameras.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards wild cameras?
A. Doubtful. B. Supporting. C. Uncertain. D. Uninterested.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要;
Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, “We've gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict.” By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they're building their children's confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that's insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents' praise has put them.
Still, don't go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging gas giving too much. Kids will feel like they're not good enough or that you don't care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments.
So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward. “We should especially recognize our children's efforts to push themselves and work hard to achieve a goal,” says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. “One thing to remember is that it’s the process not the end product that matters.”
Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he’s out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate(相称的)to the amount of effort your child has put into it.
