In 1996, Jhn Jnes made an unusual discvery. He had just enlarged a piece f paper mney fr a friend—a Cnfederate bank nte, mney issued (发行) by banks in Suthern States f America during the Civil War. When he was face t face with the picture, he culdn't believe his eyes: slaves happily picking cttn in their master's fields.
Jnes grew up in Suth Carlina. He had heard painful stries f slavery frm his great-grandmther. The picture n the mney did nt match the histry f African American slaves that he'd heard all his life. "I had never seen that type f picture n mney befre," he said.
Jnes wndered why slaves lked s happy. He started ding research.
Searching fr and finding the answers t his questins changed his life. During tw years' search, Jnes fund mre than 120 different bills. He discvered that the bills had several things in cmmn. They shwed slaves wrking in jbs related t farming. Many f them shwed healthy and smiling slaves at wrk. Nne f the bills shwed the hardships f slavery.
Jnes wanted t share what he had learned. "I wanted ther peple t see what I had seen," he said. He decided t make large paintings f the pictures n the mney. After three years f wrk, Jnes had painted mre than 80 slavery scenes (场景).He paired each painting with the mney n which the picture appeared."
