Exercise helps to keep us in good health. Doctors at the American Heart Association suggest getting at least 150 minutes of proper physical activity every week. Many people exercise for a few minutes every day or every other day. So, getting 150 minutes every week is easy.
But what about those times when you are sick? If you do not feel well, should you keep following your exercise habit? Following are the answers from health experts (专家).
Edward R. Laskowski is a doctor at the Mayo Clinic. He and other experts have a general rule about exercising when you are sick. It is usually fine to exercise properly (not hard), he explains, if your symptoms (症状) are all “above the neck”. These signs may include a runny nose, sneezing (打喷嚏) or a sore throat.
Geralyn Coopersmith, a physical fitness trainer who has written several books on exercise offers similar advice. However, both Coopersmith and Dr. Laskowski suggest taking a break from exercising if signs of your illness appears “below the neck”. Pay special attention to symptoms such as chest congestion (胸闷), bad cough or pain in the stomach.
There are other symptoms that can tell you to avoid exercise. They include a higher than normal body temperature, a sense of feeling very tired, and widespread muscle (肌肉) pain.
Both Coopersmith and Dr. Laskowski suggest listening to your body. If you feel really bad, take a break and let your body rest. If you don’t feel too bad, these experts both suggest cutting down the amount of exercise. For example, if you usually run, take a quick walk instead.
    21. How long should people do exercise according to doctors?
    A. No less than two and a half hours a week.
    B. One hundred and fifty minutes each day.
    C. At least a few minutes every day.
    D. About 150 minutes every other day.
    22. People with symptoms “below the neck” are advised to ______.
    A. stop exercise B. walk instead of run
    C. ignore the symptoms D. do less exercise
    23. What does the underlined part “listening to your body” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Taking good care of yourself.
    B. Learning to take advice of your body.
    C. Making decisions according to your physical condition.
    D. Listening to music when exercising to keep healthy.
    24. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Warnings against exercise when you are ill.
    B. Harmful results of exercise when you are ill.
    C. Time for exercise when you are ill.
    D. Professional suggestions on exercise when you are ill.
    B
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
◆Both language and music have a writing system. In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. So just as you read English, you can read music. By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read or hear the ideas of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.
◆Both vary (改变) with culture. You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
◆Both share feelings. You can know that I am angry through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer (作曲者) was or is feeling, and allows us to share that feeling. When you feel happy, you may want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness, while you probably want to listen to sad music when you are feeling down. I think we have all used music to express our feelings.
    25. What’s the main idea of the text?
    A. Language is part of people’s daily lives.
    B. Music plays an important role in people’s lives.
    C. Language and music are similar in many ways.
    D. Music is more important than language for us.
    26. How does the author develop his idea in Para 2?
    A. By giving examples. B. By making a comparison.
    C. By describing details. D. By listing reasons.
    27. What might people do when they’re in low spirit according to the text?
    A. Talking to a composer. B. Singing a happy song.
    C. Dancing to delightful music. D. Listening to unhappy music.
    C
I am a person who has always loved reading. For me, it is easy to get lost in a book and return to the world a couple of hours later having been on an adventure. As a 6-year-old, I could be found reading Harry Potter, a difficult book for a 6-year-old but I enjoyed it all the same. Now, as a student, it is harder to find the time to read books for pleasure; however, I relish the summers where I have the time to read to satisfy myself. Growing up, it soon became clear that spelling for me was not difficult and I had a wide vocabulary. This is because I began reading from such a young age.
My advice for you as English learners would be to read the books that you have often read in your own language in English. Reading, stories especially, is a great way of improving your vocabulary and spelling without noticing as you are lost in the story. For me, I have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in French and am currently reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Spanish. This is a really useful way of being able to read in another language because I know the story so well in English, it is easy to follow the story in the foreign language even if I do not understand every word.
This is another important point: it is not necessary to understand every word. If you understand the meaning of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Sometimes it is impossible to translate directly from one language to another. Quite often, if a word is used several times in a text, you can gain your own meaning from it and it makes much more sense than if you tried to translate it in the first place.
Give it a try. If you like reading you could be opening up a whole new world of literature.
    28. What can we learn from the author’s reading experiences?
    A. He often spent hours taking an adventure.
    B. He didn’t like Harry Potter any more with aging.
    C. He could spare enough time reading for fun as a student.
    D. Reading helped him a lot since his early age.
    29. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “relish” in paragraph 1?
    A. Spend. B. Lose. C. Enjoy. D. Hate.
    30. What suggestion does the author give for learning English?
    A. Reading English stories you’re familiar with in your own language.
    B. Reading Harry Potter in different languages.
    C. Translating word by word.
    D. Understanding the story in your own language.
    31. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Better Ways to Read stories.
    B. The Benefits of Reading.
    C. How to Improve Spelling and Vocabulary.
    D. Is It Necessary to Know Each Word?
    D
It’s a really good idea to visit colleges before you apply because their websites can all look and sound the same. Nothing will give you the sense of what it will actually be like to live on a college campus (校园) like visiting and seeing for yourself the dorms, classrooms and athletic equipment (器材) and, of course, the students. It seems a little crazy once senior year hits to find the time to visit college campuses, and it can also be pricey if the schools you are applying to happen to be more than a car ride away. But keep in mind that you are making a decision about the next four years of your life, and do all the research you can to make sure you are making the right one.
There’s no excuse not to visit the schools in your local area. In fact, a lot of college applications even ask if you have visited campus, and obviously, if you live across the country that won’t be as much of a possibility, but if you live nearby, go check it out! If campus visits aren’t going to happen before you apply, at the very least you should find some time between applying and getting your acceptance letters to visit the schools you’d like to attend. It can save you a lot of heartache if you rule out now the things that you don’t like about certain campuses, things that you wouldn’t know unless you actually visit.
Now, if time and money are making it impossible, then check out the online college fairs at College Week Live. It’s a chance to chat online with admissions (招生) officers, students, and college counselors (倾问), and it won’t cost you a penny! You can register (注册) for its online college fair at collegeweeklive.com. While visiting an online college fair can’t take the place of an actual campus visit, it can be a very useful tool that along with all your other research will help you make a wise decision about which colleges you’d like to attend.
    32. What does the writer intend to do by writing this text?
    A. To call on students to visit colleges for pleasure.
    B. To make people know how to apply for colleges.
    C. To give advice to students who are to apply for colleges.
    D. To explain what kind of colleges are good ones.
    33. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph1 refer to?
    A. To live on college campuses.
    B. To visit college campuses.
    C. To find the time to visit college campuses.
    D. To apply to schools on the websites.
    34. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
    A. Some colleges in local areas don’t allow students to visit.
    B. It’s necessary for students to visit the colleges they apply to.
    C. Students must visit the college campus before they apply.
    D. You’re sure to get a heartache if you don’t visit the college campus.
    35. According to paragraph 3, the writer may agree that visiting an online college fair ______.
    A. needs neither time nor money
    B. costs only a little money
    C. is as useful as an actual campus visit
    D. will be helpful in choosing colleges

    听力原文
    Text 1
M: I have great news! I got a new job.
W: That’s wonderful. I didn’t even know you had applied for a new job.
M: I sent my application on Wednesday. They called me on Friday. And my first day is next Monday.
    Text 2
W: Your tape recorder is not as good as the one I bought yesterday.
    M: Well, mine’s better than Jack’s.
    Text 3
W: I don’t know how to use this machine.
M: Just lift this and put what you want to copy in here. Make your choices, and then press the green button.
    Text 4
M: Hello! Could you tell me if my sister and I can join the basketball team?
    W: How old are you?
M: I am 12 years old, and my sister is two years younger than me.
    W: Sure.
    Text 5
W: When I am playing the piano, I don’t worry about anything. How about you?
M: I go to the gym every day. It helps me deal with stress.
    Text 6
M: Where have you been going every day, Mei?
W: Oh, I’m just taking some art lessons.
    M: Is it painting?
    W: Not really.
    M: Is it drawing?
W: It’s like drawing. I’m learning how to draw Chinese words.
M: You must be a very smart and patient person. That’s a difficult art to learn.
W: It does take a lot of practice. My teacher is very good, though, and he makes it fun to study.
M: Will you show me a little?
W: Not until I’m better at it. I just started last month.
    Text 7
W: Eat your salad, Jeffrey.Vegetables are good for you.
M: But I don’t want to. It tastes like dirt.
W: You already don’t eat fruit, and you can’t eat meat all the time.
M: Okay, fine. But you and dad have to drink milk.
    W: Why is that?
M: Because my teacher said that if you don’t drink milk, you will get sick.
W: We’ll be OK. We put some in our coffee every morning.
M: I’m all finished. Can I have some cake for dessert?
W: What did your teacher say about dessert? It’s not very healthy.
M: She said a little bit once in a while is okay.
W: OK... Get ready for bed, first. Then you can have a small slice.
    M: Deal.
    Text 8
W: What are your plans for today?
M: I have to bring my dog to the doctor.
    W: Why? Is he sick?
M: No, he’s just getting a check-up. He needs some shots, and the doctor is going to do a few tests on him to make sure that he’s healthy. He hasn’t had any health problems recently, so I think he should be fine.
W: It’s good that you bring him in every once in a while. My sister has never taken her dog to see a doctor. She says he’s a dog, so he doesn’t need to go.
M: My dog is like my son, so I do whatever I can to make sure he is happy. I even buy him the most expensive food.
W: Well, he definitely has a good life.
    Text 9
W: Hey, Jerry. You look tired.
M: Hi, Sue. Yeah, it was a late night last night.
W: What did you and Chris do after I left?
M: We stayed at Matt’ s house and played that video game one more time. Were you there when Chris ordered pizza and soda around ten?
W: Yeah, and I left around half past ten when the delivery came. That game only takes an hour per player to play. So, the two of you shouldn’t have been there too late.
M: Well, Matt left to get some juice because he doesn’t drink soda. The shop was closed, so he just had some water. Then he came back with Joey.
W: Wow, four players. That must have been a long game. How did it go?
M: Joey had never played before. So, even though Matt did really well, beginners’ luck won it for Joey.
W: What about you and Chris?
M: We knew we weren’t going to win, so we just had fun.
    Text 10
W: Once upon a time, there was a farm with chickens, rabbits, cows, and even a dog. One day, a little rabbit found a hole in the fence, and he decided to see what was on the other side. He found a small river and saw a fish swimming in it. He asked the fish if swimming was fun, and the fish said that he liked it. Then a duck flew over and landed in the water. The little rabbit asked the duck if swimming was fun. The duck said that he liked it. So, the rabbit decided to try it for himself, and he jumped into the water.
But the little rabbit didn’t know how to swim. He tried his hardest, but it was too difficult and he got scared. The fish couldn’t help him and the duck flew away. But suddenly, the dog from the farm jumped in and pulled the little rabbit out of the water. "I think we’d better go home," said the dog. The rabbit thanked the dog and promised never to leave the farm again.
