Rupert Isaacson was born in Africa, and grew up in London and in the English countryside, where he discovered his love of horses. He grew up hearing so many fascinating memories about Africa from his parents. As a result, he went there and lived with the people called The Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.
By the year 2000, Rupert was already working as a reporter, writing articles and guidebooks about Africa and India. He met his wife Kristin in India. Today, they live with their son, Rowan in the US. But Rupert faced the greatest challenge of his life when, at the age of two, Rowan was diagnosed(诊断) with an illness that influenced his ability to communicate with others.
Rupert discovered that spending time with horses and riding them was helping Rowan. But unluckily, the Bushmen of the Kalahari do not have horses. So the family set out for Mongolia where horses have been important for long. Rupert has written about this journey to help his son in his book Horse Boy, and he has produced a documentary(纪录片)of the same name. In the film, people have the chances to see the family travelling in Mongolia, riding horses and meeting healers (治疗师) in order to help Rowan.
Because working with horses has helped Rowan a lot, Rupert set up The Horse Boy Foundation on his farm in Texas. It is a school that teaches people how to use horses for healing. Besides writing another book, The Long Ride Home, about travelling with Rowan to Africa, Australia and Arizona in the US, Rupert has also produced the documentary Endangerous, with Rowan as host, about dangerous animals that are endangered. I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired(激励) by the wonderful way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity(好奇心), and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Sometimes, I would read a novel that was assigned(指派), but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete(具体的). I thought anything abstract(抽象)left too much room for argument.
Now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex(复杂的), I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter a wonderful and mysterious(神秘的)world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
59.Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands?
A. She wanted mom to read the news to her.
B. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart.
C. She couldn’t help but stop mom from reading.
D. She was eager to know what had happened.
60. According to Paragraph 3,the author’s reading of road signs shows_________.
A. her own way to find herself
B. her eagerness to develop her reading ability
C. her growing desire to know the world around her
D. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules
61. The author takes novel reading as a way to_________.
A. explore a mysterious land B. develop an interest in learning
C. get away from a confusing world D. learn about the adult world
62. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. The Pleasure of Reading B. Growing Up with Reading
C. The Magic of Reading D. Reading Makes a Full Man
D
It seems to be strange to you there is a blind spot on the eyes. Here is an interesting experiment that can make something disappear, when one eye is open.
Make a card about the size of a postcard and write two English letters L and R on it, L on the left and R on the right. First, hold the card about 80 cm away and you see both the letters. Then close your right eye and look at the letter R only with your left eye. And now, as you move the card slowly towards you, you'll find the letter L disappearing. But if you move the card nearer to your face, the letter will be seen again. Now do the same experiment with your left eye closed, you'll find the letter R disappearing.
Why does the letter disappear? It is because there is a blind spot on the eye. When the image (影像)of the letter falls on the blind spot, it won’t be seen. That is why either of the letters disappears.
63.The writer of the passage thinks that _____ there is a blind spot on the eye.
A. few people know B. no one knows
C. most people know D. all the people know
