One Canada, Two Languages
Canada is one of the few nations in the world to have two official languages: English and French. There are 10 provinces in the country, but only one of these—Quebec is known as “French Canada”. This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.
Canada left the British Empire (帝国) in 1867 to become an independent country and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since.
Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country. Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare.
The same goes for traffic signs and menus, for example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you’ll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it’s almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland (中心地带)of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels (标签)and instructions in both languages.
In Canada’s English-speaking provinces, official bilingualism means that students can choose to complete a special French language course. Under this program, they are taught most of their subjects in French.
If a student begins the course in kindergarten (幼儿园)or Grade One, it is likely that all his lessons will be in French. However, if he starts at junior high school, 25 percent of the teaching will continue to be in English.
24.Which country controlled Canada before its independence?
A.France. B.Britain. C.America. D.Germany.
25.Where can you watch French television programs?
A.Only in Quebec.
B.In Quebec and a few other places.
C.From the two national television networks.
D.All over Canada.
26.What does the underlined word “bilingualism” in the fifth paragraph mean?
A.外语教育 B.母语教育 C.双语教育 D.语言教育
27.What do we know about the education in Canada?
A.In English-speaking provinces only English courses are offered.
B.If you choose a special French language course, most of the subjects will be taught in French.
C.The courses in primary schools are all taught in English.
D.Most of the courses in junior high schools are taught in English.

Whenever we see a button, we want to press it because we know that something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example, on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake(假的), like the “close” button on a lift.
Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the U.S.—the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.
It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the U.S., making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter safely. Only repair workers can use the buttons to speed up the door closing process if they have special keys.
But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.
“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases wellbeing,” said Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor at Harvard University. Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose.
For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don’t live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computercontrolled traffic signals were introduced.
But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.
28.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe different fake buttons. B.To explore the functions of fake buttons.
C.To analyze various habits of pushing buttons. D.To explain the disadvantages of fake buttons.
29.What can we learn about the “close” buttons on a lift in America?
A.They work when people press them hard.
B.They were designed for a sense of control.
C.They never speed up the doorclosing process.
D.They take the safety of the disabled into account.
30.What can we infer about pedestrian crosswalk buttons?
A.They can make people feel better. B.They help computers work faster.
C.They can control the traffic signals. D.They help pedestrians cross safely.
31.Which may be the best title for the passage?
A.Buttons in the U.S.A. B.Buttons Always Lie
C.Buttons May Not Work D.“Close” Buttons on Lifts

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.
32.What can we learn about the Character Hero? ________
A.It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.
B.It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.
C.It draws great public attention across the country.
D.It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
33.Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A.Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
B.Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C.Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
D.Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
34.According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is ________.
A.helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
B.a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C.necessary for adults to survive in China
D.an ability to be developed only when you are students
35.Where does this text probably come from? ________
A.A science report. B.A news report.
C.Children’s literature. D.An advertisement.

Text 10
W: Finding an apartment is time-consuming and disappointing, but with a little preparation and most importantly, a lot of patience, you’ll get what you want. The first thing you need to do is to make some time in your schedule. If you are going to find the apartment that fits your requirements, then unless you’re really lucky, you are going to have to spend a lot of time hunting. The next thing is to decide exactly what you want and how much you can afford. Think about what cities or neighborhoods you’d like to live in and what you’d like for your local neighborhood. Write down what features are important to you, such as parking, public transportation and security. Then you start hunting. Search every website you can find, and start going through the ads. It is probably best to start by picking out all the apartments that are within your price range and then check the location and traffic. Then make the call — but prepare yourself for disappointment. Apartments that look good on the Internet often turn out to be disappointing. And of course, you find that all the really great apartments have just been taken.

参考范文
Dear Jim,
I’m delighted to hear that you’ll be a senior student. Now, I’d like to share my study tips with you.
First, you’d better communicate with your teachers regularly. In this way, they may offer some great advice on both your study and life. Second, why not involve yourself in each class actively, listen to the teacher attentively and take notes carefully so that you can review later? Third, it’s a good idea to do your homework on time soon after school, which will help you practice what you have learned and make it fresh in your mind.
I sincerely hope my advice can be helpful to you and that you can enjoy your new school life. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
