In the 1930s, a lt f peple in the USA were ut f wrk. Amng these peple was a man named Alfred Butts. He always had an interest in wrd games and s, t fill his time, he planned a game which he called “Lexic”. Hwever, he was nt cmpletely satisfied with the game, s he made a number f changes t it and, in time, changed its name frm “Lexic” t “Alph” and then t “Criss Crss. He wanted t make sme mney frm his new game but he didn’t have any real cmmercial(商业性的) success.
In 1939, Butts happened t meet a man called Jim Brunt wh shwed an interest in the new game. The tw men wrked tgether n develping the game and in 1948 it was ffered fr sale in the United States under its new name “Scrabble”.
At first, it didn’t sell very well. In the first year it sld just 2,250 sets and by 1951 it had nly reached 8,500 sets a year. Then, in 1952 the manager f Macy’s department stre in New Yrk, Jack Strauss, happened t play “Scrabble” while he was n hliday.
