教学重难点: Language and Teaching focuses Vocabulary: ability, race, record, method, break, Asian, suffer, courage, pride Sentence structure: First, he was invited to competitions around the world. Liu was encouraged at first to train for the high jump. In 2001, a special programme was set up to help young sportsmen and sportswomen. His races were recorded, and he was compared with the world’s best sports stars.
Anticipated difficulties: Students may feel difficult to use past simple tense to talk about Liu Xiang and other sports stars.
教学过程: Step1 Lead-in Have the Ss see a video about Liu Xiang and then talk about Liu Xiang.
Step 2 Pre-reading Show students some pictures of Liu Xiang, have the Ss try to describe them and learn new words as well. New words: hurdling race, first place, break the record, take pride in. Step 3 While-reading Scanning Have Ss scan the passage and find out the main idea of it. (Activity 2) Then check the answer and ask Ss to talk about the reasons why they choose the sentence as the main idea. Skimming Have Ss skim the passage and match the years with the notes to complete the timeline (Activity 3) in pairs. Careful-reading (1)Have Ss focus on the details of each paragraph and raise up as many questions as they can. (2)Read Para. 1, complete the sentences and answer the question In 2004, Liu XIang _________ to competitions around the world and _________ for Chinese team at the Athens Olympic Games. Q: After he became famous, what happened to him in 2004? (3)Read Paragraph 2-4 and complete the sentences He ________ in Shanghai on 13th July 1983. He ________ at first to train for the high jump. In May 2001, Liu Xiang won the first Olympic gold medal and broke the record. Liu Xiang is the first sportsperson won an Olympic gold medal for hurdling. Liu Xiang is not successful after he won Olympic Games. Step 4 Post-reading (1)Retell Talk about Liu Xiang’s sports life with the following information. 1983 born in Shanghai 1993(Grade 4) started training at a sports school 1998 hurdling ability noticed 2001 won his first international 110m hurdles race 2004 won Olympic gold medal 2008 suffered from foot problem 2012 returned to first place (2)Discussion Why did Liu Xiang become a successful sportsman? His foot problem stopped him from completing the 2012 London Olympic Games. Do you continue to take great pride in him? (3)Writing Disscuss how to write a passage about someone’s sports life? Write sentences about about table tennis player Zhang Yining. Rewrite the sentences with past simple passive.
