    Black Loyalist Heritage Center
Opened in 2015, the Black Loyalist Heritage Center tells the story of Birchton, which was home to free African population outside Africa during the late 18th century. It was one of those freezing cold New England mornings in 1964. A four-day-old snow had turned to ice as it pressed against my bedroom window. In my twelve-year-old sleepiness, I staggered through the dark hallway into the bedroom, hearing the truck’s engine outside.
Staring out, I saw his figure - a dark shadow moving against the white background - his breath clouding the air when he breathed. I heard his work boots crunching the hard snow with his giant steps. I saw his dark face hidden beneath a knit cap, the upturned coat collar, the woolen scarf wrapped around his neck and chin. One gloved hand guided the ice scraper (刮削器)across the truck’s windshield. The other brushed the shavings like a crystal beard from the truck’s old weathered face.
That was my daddy. Driven by a commitment and responsibility, he was taught to move with a quick purpose during Great Depression of the 1930s. Daddy was like a silent gladiator(角斗士) who was stepping once more into the day’s battlefield. Daddy was always awake while the rest of the world slept. And as he slid behind the steering wheel, driving carefully from the driveway onto the street, the truck was swallowed up by dawn’s dimness. As I returned to the warmth of my blankets - in my own bed, in my own room, I knew I could go back to sleep, to dream, because daddy was outside facing the cold.
Throughout many junior and senior high mornings, I watched my father go to work. I never told him how the affected me. When I reached my early thirties and I became a father myself, I saw my own father with greater clarity. As I awoke in the early morning hours, compromised my wants, dealt with insults and worked overtime in order to give my son his own room - with his own bed and his own dreams, I realized I was able to do those things because my father had done them for me.
    24. What was his father doing when the writer looked out of the window?
    A. He repaired his old weathered truck.
    B. He got rid of the ice on the truck.
    C. He moved with a quick purpose.
    D. He started the truck’s engineer.
    25. Which of the following best describes the writer’s father?
    A. Tolerant. B. Responsible. C. Ambitious. D. Considerate.
    26. What did the writer realize when he reached his thirties?
    A. The tricks of dealing with insults.
    B. The importance of owning a house.
    C. The duty of being a father.
    D. The benefit of waking up early.
    27. Where is the text probably from?
    A. A brochure. B. A poster. C. A book review. D. A biography.
    C
Have you ever thought about what happens to people’s property when they die? That’s where wills come in. Traditionally, wills were only made by the elderly. Many young people think they don’t need wills if they don’t have kids or houses yet. But in recent years, this perception has started to change.
A white paper released by the China Will Registration Center in March revealed that more people in their 20s and 30s are now writing wills in China, reported China Daily. The Daily Mail also reported that more young people are writing wills thanks to the CoVID-19 pandemic. In the UK, only 18 percent of 18-to 34-уеаr-olds had wills in 2019, compared to 27 percent in 2021. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Emily James, 22, said the main reason she wrote a will was the pandemic. “In the current climate, you can’t really get away from death - it’s something my generation has never been faced with so distinctly before. The death count is broadcast every day, and most people know someone who has been affected by the virus, which starts to make you think and want to plan for your future.”
Apart from the pandemic, public knowledge of celebrities’ health conditions, like the British royal family, has led to more people writing wills. The highest number of wills written on a single day in 2021 was on Feb 18, following the late Prince Philip’s admission to hospital, according to data from Farewill, one of the UK’s biggest death planning companies.
Farewill’s data also show that the legacies young people leave in their wills are reflections of current society. Music and pop culture collections were among the top things included in wills. The most common pop culture collections mentioned were Disney, Star Wars and Harry Potter memorabilia(纪念品).
The pandemic increased people’s likelihood of including a gift to a charity in their will. Furry friends are also not forgotten. Farewill’s data show nearly one-fifth of the people were making wills to ensure their pets were well looked after, with a total of 37 percent of will writers including plans for their pets.
    28. What did the Daily Mail report?
    A. More people in the West are writing wills.
    B. The number of young will writers is increasing.
    C. The UK saw the most young will writers in 2021.
    D. People aged 18-34 made the most wills in the UK in 2021.
    29. Why did Emily James write a will?
    A. She was infected with Covid -19.
    B. She felt desperate during the pandemic.
    C. She realized future was unpredictable.
    D. She was affected by the death of Prince Philip.
    30. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
    A. The influence of pop culture on the youth.
    B. The influence of the pandemic on the youth.
    C. The importance attached to writing a will by the youth.
    D. The influence of the current society on the will contents of the youth.
31.Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. Pandemic And Wills B. Pandemic Changes Society
    C. The Youth And Will Writing D. Youth Leave Their Legacy in Pandemic
    D
Ice from the massive Greenland ice sheet will eventually raise global sea level by at least 10 inches (27 meters) on its own, according to a recent study.
Zombie or doomed ice is ice that is still attached lo thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by those larger glaciers. That’s because the parent glaciers are getting less replenishing snow, said study co-author William Colgan, a glaciologist at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.
“It’s dead ice. It’s just going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet regardless of what climate scenario we take now.” Colgan said in an interview. Jason Box, another glaciologist at the Greenland survey, also said it is “more like one foot in the grave”.
What scientists did for the study was look at the ice in balance. Normally, snowfall in the mountains in Greenland flows down and recharges and thickens the sides of glacicrs, balancing out what’s melting on the edges. But in the last few decades, there’s less replenishment and more melting, creating imbalance. Based on the ratio of what’s being added to what’s being lost, the study authors calculated that 3.3% of Greenland’s total ice volume will melt, contributing to at least ten inches in sea level rise, a global average.
This is the first time scientists calculated a minimum ice loss - and accompanying sea level rise - for Greenland, one of Earth’s two massive ice sheets that are slowly shrinking because of climate change from burning coal, oil and natural gas.
As for the timing of the committed melting, Colgan responded that the team doesn’t know how long it will take the doomed ice to melt, but making an educated guess, it would probably be by the end of this century or at least by 2150.
32.What does the underlined word “replenishing” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Added. B. Left. C. Exchanged. D. Decreased.
    33. What is implied in Jason Box’s words ?
    A. Scientists step onto the great ice sheet.
    B. There is more than one foot in the tomb.
    C. The melting of the doomed ice IS unavoidable.
    D. The Zombie ice in Greenland looks like one foot.
34.What’s the author’s attitude towards the loss of the two ice sheets in Greenland?
    A. Indifferent. B. Objective. C. Critical D. Optimistic.
    35. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Zombie ice in Greenland will melt in the near future.
    B. Scientists did a research on the massive Greenland ice sheet.
    C. The greenhouse effect accounts for the disappearance of the ice sheet.
    D. Doomed ice in Greenland will lead to sea level rise by at least 27 centimeters.

Whether it’s studying for exams, working on a project or struggling with an essay, we’ve all been under immense stress at some point. When it gets a bit overwhelming, we can reach a level of exhaustion like never before- the awful burnout. 36
According to Psychology Today, burnout isn’t just caused by working long hours; it is more about long-term or repeated exposure to a stressful situation. The result can be feelings like depression and sleepiness. A feeling of loss of control in a work scenario can create a conflict with the sense of self - which can lead burnout. 37 This means that striving to be more efficient can result in a reduction in our productivity.
38 Well, there are some tips that may help you. Psychologist Albert Bandura’s idea of self-efficacy - which is the theory that you should believe in your ability to complete a task at hand - may assist you. A feeling that the task is achievable and that you are capable of succeeding means that a difficult task might be less tiring.
Finding ways to express your creative side may also help. Not everyone has creative aspects to their jobs, and therefore, they need to find other outlets. 39 All оf these may help to detach them from the overwhelming stress that may exist in their working life.
Looking after yourself and your surroundings can also be beneficial. 40 This, in turn, leads to another tip, which is to have healthy and positive thoughts. Being negative can be incredibly draining. Having a positive mental attitude towards everything you do means that you may feel more capable as well.
    A. But what can we do to avoid the evils of burnout?
    B. They could paint, write or take part in local theatre.
    C. There’s no doubt that a better environment does good to you.
    D. Suffering from burnout can block our creativity and productivity.
    E. However, that feeling of exhaustion is not just physical, but can be mental as well.
    F. The consequence is that you are surrounded by a cleaner and more positive environment.
    G. It is pushing ourselves hard that leads to bumout, which is associated with the pressures of the modern world.

I was moving as fast as I could, stepping cautiously from rock to rock along the uneven jetty(栈桥). Far ahead, I could see the back of my brother’s sandy hair and the bright orange of his shorts.
“Too slow, sister!” I heard Sam yell as he hopped with ease.
“I’ll show him,” I thought, and attempted a double jump. What a mistake! My left foot came down hard between the edges of two gray rocks. scraping my ankle. “Ouch!” I yelled. I tried to wiggle(扭动) my foot out, but my shoe was stuck. I bent closer to the rock and that’ s when I saw it: a shiny, square shaped stone the color of water, attached to a glittery gold chain. It was just lying there on the wet sand, and a few seconds later it was in my pocket.
Sam squinted(眯着眼睛看) in the sun. Could he tell I was hiding the most perfect discovery of the summer? I kept turning the treasure around in my pocket, pushing each corner of the square stone into my finger. I was dizzy, but I didn’t want Sam to notice. He liked to tell everybody my business.
“Ryan saved the mini cola bottle from the carnival! It happened to be perfect for sand art!
“Ryan wasted her allowance on salt and pepper shakers from the yard sale!” They were antique little pig and cost only 50 cents.
My family calls me their “little collector. Some mean kids at school call me “trash girl”.
Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Through the window of the candy shop, I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Very special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster. The necklace looked different from the one I clutched in my pocket, I decided. Rounder, bluer. The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up months ago. We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by now, I thought.

    Dear David,
Hearing you encounter some difficulty when planning to hold an activity called Into Chinese Opera, I’m writing to recommend Beijing Opera to you and offer some relevant suggestions.
Beijing Opera, the cream of the Chinese culture, enjoys great popularity in China with its costumes and facial masks. To hold the activity successfully, it is advisable to provide authentic performances, thus exposing students to the charm of ancient art. Besides, platforms can be offered for students to try on opera clothes, and even participate in the performances.
Hope my suggestion will be helpful and wish you every success in your activity. (99)

    Li Hua

Once home, I placed the necklace in my special spot for special things, lost in thought. So far, there were a variety of things like mini cola bottles and shakers. I stared at the stone, so clean and polished. Could it be Chrissy’s? Was it a very special necklace? Should I return it to her? I paced back and forth in the room anxiously, not knowing what to do. Having struggled for a long time, I finally decided to call the number on the poster and get in touch with Chrissy. I told her that I might have something that belonged to her and made an appointment with her.
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting across from Chrissy in the candy shop. We were drinking milkshakes and sharing an order of sweet potato fries. Looking at the blue stone in her hand with her tearful eyes, she told me that the necklace was a gift from her mom before she got sick and she was grateful to me for returning the necklace to her. “Holding onto it somehow makes things a little better.” she said. I couldn’t agree more with her. It dawned on me that I became “a treasure girl” instead of “a trash girl” called by the mean kids at school.

定位到文章第二段,“more young people are writing wills thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic”可知,由于新冠疫情,越来越多的人开始写遗嘱了。
定位到文章第三段,“The death count is broadcast every day, and most people know someone who has been affected by the virus, which starts to make you think and want to plan for your future.”
定位到文章最后两段,“Farewill's data also show that the legacies young people leave in their wills are reflections of current society.”(年轻人在遗嘱中留下的遗产反映了当今的社会)以及“The pandemic increased people's likelihood of including a gift to a charity in their will.”(新冠疫情增加了人们在遗嘱中包括给慈善机构礼物的可能性)可知,新冠疫情影响了人们的遗嘱,也就是社会对年轻人遗嘱的影响,故选D。

从该段第一句话“Zombie or doomed ice is ice……but is no longer getting fed by those larger glaciers.”
原句“ It's just going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet, regardless of what climate scenario we take now.”
这是一篇科普性文章,故文章的第一段最新研究/轰动性发现就是文章的主旨,也就是“ Zombie ice from the massive Greenland ice sheet will eventually raise global sea level by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own/来自巨大格陵兰冰盖的僵尸冰最终将使全球海平面自行上升至少10英寸(27厘米)”。

第36题 E 前文介绍的“studying for exams, working on a project or struggling with an essay, we've all been under immense stress at some point”介绍的是备考项目论文带来的压力与疲劳,后文又介绍了工作倦怠带来的疲劳,并格外强调了工作疲劳会带来“depression and sleepiness/抑郁与困倦”,“A feeling of loss of control/失控感”,从前到后完成了从身体疲劳到精神疲劳介绍的过度,所以E选项表达的“that feeling of exhaustion is not just physical, but can be mental as well/这种疲惫感不仅是身体上的,也可能是心理上的”是最合适的。
第37题 D 从后文“This means that striving to be more efficient can result in a reduction in our productivity./这意味着,努力提高效率会导致我们的生产力下降”可知,如果身体处于一个过度疲劳的状态,这时候努力提高效率是没有用的,同义替换来说,也就是D选项表达的“Suffering from burnout can block our creativity and productivity/精疲力竭会阻碍我们的创造力和生产力活动”。
第38题 A 从后文“Well, there are some tips that may help you”可知,接下来就开始介绍如何减轻这种工作疲劳的方法了,所以我们应该选择一个过渡句来引起对后文方法的介绍,也就是A选项“But what can we do to avoid the evils of burnout/但我们能做些什么来避免倦怠的恶果呢?”。
从前文“Not everyone has creative aspects to their jobs, and, therefore, they need to find other outlets./并非每个人的工作都有创造性,因此,他们需要寻找其他渠道。”
第40题 F 从该段开头“Looking after yourself and your surroundings can also be beneficial/照顾好自己和周围的环境也是有益的”可知,这一段在讲自己状态转好后对周围环境的积极影响,选项中唯一与环境相关的就是F选项“The consequence is that you are surrounded by a cleaner and more positive environment/结果是你周围的环境更干净、更积极”。

Beijing Opera, the cream of the Chinese culture, enjoys great popularity in China with its costumes and facial masks.
W: Hey, forgot to tell you … Joe and Anna are moving to Paris!
M: Really? Isn’t that a bit sudden? How did that happen?
W: His company offered him a job out there. They’re going for at least a couple of years.

    (Text 2)
M: Hello, I’m calling to ask whether you can send someone to take a look at our ceiling. It’s been leaking since last night’s rainstorm.
W: Hi, Mr. Stevenson. I’m afraid we’re already booked up for this week. But I think we can make it next Monday.

    (Text 3)
    W: How was the training?
M: The training was a great challenge. I learned a lot.
W: I’m glad you see it that way. Not a lot of people take a positive attitude towards training.
    M: Anyway, I’m glad I went.

    (Text 4)
M: Have you seen my blue sweater? It was on the back of my chair before I went to the meeting, but now it’s disappeared.
W: Are you sure you left it there? When I came in the office to remind you about the meeting I didn’t see it.

    (Text 5)
M: Listen to this. The Education Minister is now saying that teachers deserve a pay rise. That’s a complete change of opinion!
W: I’m glad to hear it. He’s been listening to public opinion, obviously.

    (Text 6)
M: Hi, my name is Tom Smith. I saw a sign that said all visitors need to sign in here.
W: That’s correct. May I ask your reason for visiting City Hall today?
M: Actually, I’d like to take a tour. I’m interested in historic buildings.
W: Is that so? We’ve had more visitors ever since the regional museum opened.
M: Oh, I was just there. Do you have any idea where I should start?
W: Here, take this brochure. It has some information about the building’s history and shows you where the points of interest are. Let me know if you have any questions.

    (Text 7)
M: Have you met our new marketing manager? I heard he came from our Chicago branch and started work here last Monday.

W: Yes, I saw Mr. Wang in the staff meeting on Friday for the first time. He looked very energetic and organized. In particular, I liked the way he developed our new marketing strategies. He encouraged participants to share their ideas in an informal and inviting way.
M: It sounds like he has a constructive approach. I hope he will bring us more enthusiasm and help us increase our profits in the end.
W: That’s exactly what I want from him. By the way, there is another meeting that he is supposed to chair on Tuesday. You’ll be there, won’t you?

    (Text 8)
W: Good morning. You have reached Dr. Henry’s office. This is Laura. How may I help you?
M: Hi, this is Joel Phillips. I’d like to reschedule my appointment today at three o’clock to another time tomorrow. Is that possible?
W: I’m afraid the appointments are already fully booked for this week. Mr. Phillips, you’ve already waited two weeks to make this reservation and you really should have your teeth examined. Is there any way you can come today as arranged?
M: I know, but I am at an urgent meeting with my client right now and I might not make it to the three o’clock appointment. Well, I’ll try to conclude everything quickly in the meeting so that I can arrive at your clinic on time. Thank you.

    (Text 9)
M: Today I’m talking with 15-year-old Adriana Brown. She built her own bicycle generator. Adriana, can you tell us about your project? How did you get started?
W: Well, I’ve helped my dad with some of his projects. But I decided I wanted to do my own project this time. So I researched ideas on the Internet. I decided on a bicycle generator because it’s really useful. I can use it to power my computer.
M: So, how did you build it?
W: First, I found plans for generators. I chose a simple design and made a first draft of the project. Then, my dad made some suggestions and I made another draft. After that, I started to look for materials. The only problem was that I didn’t have a lot of money, so it was difficult!
M: So, what did you do?
W: Well, I went to a bicycle shop and a car repair shop. I told them about my project. They gave me some extra parts.
    M: Oh, that was nice.
W: Yeah, it really was … When I got all the materials, I was ready to put it all together.
M: Well, I think it’s great. Very impressive!

    (Text 10)
M: OK, are you all settled? Well, first of all, welcome to Cardiff University. I’m here to explain what we can offer you.
Now, as a new student at the university, you will probably need some sort of guidance to help you to use the library effectively to study and research. Some of you have asked about a guided tour but we find this rather confuses people. So, in this first week, we run a series of talks which focus on different aspects of the library and its resources.

OK, now let me give you an outline of what’s available to you. You’ll find that the computers are increasingly used as a research tool. Many students do most of their research on the Internet and the library computers are permanently online. Having found what you need, you’ll find you can readily save texts on your personal computer space to print off when you need.
Naturally we do still have the full range of classic reference books for you to use and there are several copies of each one. This is because some of you may prefer to borrow a book rather than sit in the library. There is a restricted loan time on these so that they are not missing from the shelves for too long. Although there is a Section Manager for each part of the library, they are very busy and so, if you do get stuck looking for things, you should ask the relevant Cataloguing Assistant. As your Training Supervisor, I just oversee your work for a week and will not be around after this initial week.
