The COVID-19 pandemic is causing worldwide concern for elementary and secondary school students’ mental condition. The following are some possible activities that can be carried out to help them and also create a safe and healthy school environment.
John’s and Mary’s thoughts
Students are presented with a picture which says that John and Mary have different thoughts after they have heard of the coronavirus (冠状病毒). Then students are invited to guess and write the characters’ thoughts on the picture. This activity uses a “projective” method, as students are not asked what their feelings are, but instead, they project their feelings onto the characters.
When I’m worried
After talking about what the characters may think, students can now turn their attention to themselves. They are asked to list their common worries, but most importantly, they are directed to think about some response measures and the helpful relationships they can rely on. This is a vital exercise, for it shifts students’ focus from their worries to the coping strategies.
Seeking a balance
Students are asked to provide three key recommendations to prevent infection. Teachers can pick out the positive behavior and correct any incorrect suggestions. It’s also important to strike a balance between the recommended healthy behavior and the concept that microorganisms are a natural part of the environment and that many of them play a key role in sustaining human life.
Videos to know and understand viruses
It is advisable to plan science lessons on microorganisms. Students can know more about the pandemic by studying microbial (微生物的) life, and thus they can understand what viruses are and how they spread. But be careful not to bring anxiety—avoid talking about scary messages.
21. Which activity helps students express their feelings indirectly?
A. Seeking a balance. B. John’s and Mary’s thoughts.
C. When I’m worried. D. Videos to know and understand viruses.
22. Why is the second activity important to reduce students’ worries?
A. It puts students at ease.
B. It directs students’ attention to the solutions.
C. It enables students to share experiences.
D. It helps students to establish good relationships.
23. What can students learn from the last two activities?
A. The concept of science. B. Suggestions to prevent infection.
C. Knowledge about microorganisms. D. Positive behavior to stay healthy.

24 years ago Jim Ritter was a typical, active high school student. At age sixteen his life changed forever, when Jim was working at his father’s logging business in the small town of Montesano, Washington. One Friday, his dad woke him at 4:30 am to work. Having finished the morning work, Jim crawled into the grapple (吊车) for an after-lunch nap. It was then that Jim’s father started the engines, not realizing that his son lay inside, asleep.
“Oh my God!” Jim’s father cried out. “I broke his neck!”
Immediately, Jim’s dad called for help on the C.B radio. A logging company helicopter heard the call for help and picked Jim up, taking him to the hospital in Olympia, sixty-five miles away. It was truly a miracle! His father’s logging business was in the middle of nowhere, and helicopters hardly ever flew around there. After surgery, Jim was left paralyzed from the neck down. Nine weeks later, he was moved to an orthopedic (矫形的) hospital in Seattle where he became an inspiration to the nurses and other patients with his optimism and good sense of humor.
One day a volunteer came by Jim’s room and asked if he would like to try painting pictures. “I can’t,” Jim told her. “I’m paralyzed.” However, having been shown a video in which a paralyzed girl was drawing by holding a pen between her teeth, Jim decided to give it a try: If that girl could do it, so could he!
It was awkward and difficult at first. Jim practiced day after day, and gradually his drawings turned from amateur sketches into beautiful scenes. Prior to the accident, Jim had never drawn.
Today, Jim lets nothing stand in his way. He is able to support himself by holding art shows throughout the country. How easy it is to justify giving up on our dreams with a ready excuse. “It’s too difficult.” “I’m not that smart.” “I don’t have time.” Jim Ritter is living proof that no excuse is good enough.
24. What do we know about Jim on that particular Friday when he was sixteen?
A. He got seriously injured. B. He overslept.
C. He operated the machine wrongly. D. He worked the whole day.
25. What do the underlined words “in the middle of nowhere” probably mean?
A. Close to shut-down. B. Far away from the airport.
C. In the process of operation. D. In a remote place.
26. What eventually made Jim turn to painting in the hospital?
A. His previous experience in art. B. The volunteer’s encouragement.
C. The drawing scene of a paralyzed girl. D. A paralyzed girl’s amazing works.
27. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. A man’s recovery from an accident. B. A man’s rising from adversity.
C. People’s care for the disabled. D. A paralyzed girl’s inspiring story.
C
Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) was already a problem before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. After the outbreak of the pandemic, lockdown and work-from-home orders were put into force, meaning people were having to spend even more of their time online.
Previously, more time online had been linked to an increased chance of a person participating in cyberbullying. Studies have shown that stress and anxiety have increased during the pandemic, both of which can lead to increases in the number of interactions that involve cyberbullying. Yet this phenomenon has actually decreased during the pandemic. The reason behind this could tell us how to better deal with this problem once we finally emerge from the pandemic.
One reason for the decline is that in-person interactions can fuel both online and in-person bullying. Bullying tends to start in free time, which doesn’t exist in the same way in online schooling. This suggests that if we focus prevention efforts on free time, it is likely that we will be able to stop both traditional forms of bullying, as well as that of cyberbullying.
Bullying rates aren’t fixed. When children feel nurtured and socially and emotionally safe, they bully less. During the pandemic, young people have been spending more time at home with their parents or carers. For some, this has probably provided feelings of safety — a positive effect well known to occur in time of disaster or crisis.
Positive relationships can also help reduce bullying. While it is undoubtedly true that some families have experienced interpersonal conflicts during the crisis, most households have been reporting positive increases in their feelings of unity and bonding among their family members. Studies have shown that children reported more positive feelings when asked about having to spend more time with their families. Keeping these positive relationships strong may also help prevent bullying in the future.
28. What led to more online time according to the passage?
A. Measures against the pandemic. B. Development of technology.
C. Addiction to the Internet. D. More participation in cyberbullying.
29. What explains the decreased cyberbullying?
A. A close watch on young people. B. A sense of safety found in study.
C. A good relationship with family. D. A busy online schooling schedule.
30. How does the passage develop?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By giving examples.
C. By making contrast. D. By describing the process.
31. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To show cyberbullying is a constant problem.
B. To compare traditional bullying and cyberbullying.
C. To call on people to fight against cyberbullying.
D. To explore possible solutions to cyberbullying.
D
If you are hooked on watching fantasy or reading science fiction, you may be on to something. Contrary to the common misunderstanding that reading science fiction and fantasy is an unworthy practice, reading it may help young people cope, especially with the stress and anxiety of living while developing critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence for young readers.
Historically, parents have considered literature "good" for young people if it provides moral guidance that reflects their own values. The question is, how does literature of science fiction perform its educational function? This is central to the conflict between parents and educators about what kids should read. For a long time, those who read it have been stigmatized(污名化)as geeks who can't cope with reality.
A 2015 survey found that these science fiction readers were also major consumers of a wide range of other types of books. In fact, the study noted a close connection between reading varied literary forms and an ability to understand science. Rather than limiting readers' capacity to deal with reality, reading outside-the-box creative stories may expand their ability to engage reality based on science.
Science fiction does not need to provide real stories about serious social and political issues. Instead, it offers a distance between them. This distance gives readers an approach to coping with complexity and using their imagination to manage real-life challenges. It is why they are powerful and where their value lies. What better way to deal with the uncertainty in life than with science fiction, which explores uncertainty and depicts young people as brave characters, survivors and shapers of their own fates?
Reading science fiction, young people can see themselves-coping, surviving and learning lessons-that may enable them to create their own strategies for life. And the critical thinking and wise habits of mind prompted by this type of literature may actually produce creativity that everyday life and reality typically do not.
32. Why is science fiction rejected by many parents as a proper type of reading?
A. It seldom develops critical and creative thinking.
B. It agrees with the common belief in society.
C. It lacks the educational functions they need.
D. It results in too many expectations from parents.
33. What is the author trying to convey with the findings of 2015 survey?
A. Literature has a negative effect on understanding science.
B. More other types of reading are consumed than science fiction.
C. Science fiction reading restricts readers' capacity to deal with stress.
D. Reading science fiction helps to develop the young's ability to cope with reality.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards reading science fiction?
A. Indifferent B. Disapproval C. Neutral D. Favorable
35. What's the best title of the passage?
A. Why science fiction is so appealing to the young readers
B. How reading science fiction helps kids deal with reality
C. What stories science fiction is bringing to the young people
D. How science fiction turns into the literature mainstream

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I have the bad habit of skipping to the last pages of a book to see how it ends while I am still in the middle of it. 36
Often my impatience wouldn’t be limited just to the books I read but also to what they were reading as well. Finally one day my daughter told me in anger, “Dad please just read a book one page at a time like everyone else! “
37 I have also tried to skip ahead in my own life and figure out what to do months and even years from now instead of embracing each day as God intended. I knew that the book of my life wasn’t done yet and that I had many pages left to go. Still, that didn’t stop me from trying to write the ending half-way through.
Time and again, I would foolishly jump ahead and try to solve every imaginable problem before it happened so I could reach that storybook happily ever after ending. 38 God loves to surprise us, and you never know what new problem, change, or opportunity each new day will bring.
Recently when I found myself returning to that bad habit of rushing ahead and living in the future again, something unexpected struck into my heart. 39 When I realized it I smiled, turned the book of my life back to the right page, and thanked God for today.
40 Each of us has to live it one page and one day at a time. Each of us has to have faith in God to help us to write it line by line and moment by moment. Each of us has to trust that our Heavenly Father will bring our story to its perfect end.
A. I realized life is always going like this.
B. Life, however, doesn’t work like that.
C. There is no skipping ahead in the book of life.
D. At times I haven’t limited this bad habit to just books either.
E. Nevertheless, her words didn’t have much influence on me.
F. This annoyed first my mom, then my friends, and finally even my own daughter.
G. I heard a special soul gently telling me I needed to live one day at a time.

What will life in the future be like?
With the fast development of society, our life in the future will be quite different.
As far as I can imagine, there will be a robot in every family. With artificial intelligence, not only can it handle everything from housework to all kinds of activities but it will help the disabled live with dignity as well. When it comes to the means of transportation, a variety of environment-friendly cars will be seen running everywhere. Powered by solar energy instead of gas, these cars can run by itself without any driver. Besides, in the future we will not be content to travel on earth. Instead, the moon will become one of the good places for our holidays.
What an inviting life! I hope the day will come soon.
