This evening as I was leaving a supermarket where I had just bought many daily necessities and food, I noticed this man going through the garbage can outside of the store. As I walked to my car I watched him as he reached in the garbage can and pulled out fast food trash bags and inspected all that was in the thrown-away bags. He did this for several minutes. He would find a few fries in one bag and a bite or two of a hamburger in another. You can see the hamburger wrapper by his knee where he was placing the food items he’d found.
He never bothered anyone or tried to stop and beg for money as people entered and left the store. After he went through the entire trash can he neatly cleaned up the area and wrapped up the food he found in the dirty hamburger wrapper. My heart literally hurt for him. I am not someone who just hands out money or even helps homeless people because so many are not truly homeless. I don’t guess I’ve ever seen someone actually go through a garbage can to try to find food to eat.
I knew I had to help him. I got out of my car and asked him if I could buy him something to eat. He told me he would appreciate anything I could get him. He was on a bike and I told him if he’d follow me, I’d buy him a meal at the fast food place around the block. He followed me and I bought him the biggest meal they had on the menu.
When I brought him his food, he was so thankful. He told me his name was Steve and he’d been homeless ever since his sister died last September. He was trying to get off the streets, but it was so hard.

For my fifth-grade science fair project, I got six chicken eggs in an incubator(孵化器).
“But I don’t know anything about hatching an egg.”
Mrs. Brubeck smiled. “You don’t have to be an immediate expert at everything, Juli. The idea here is to learn something new.”
“But what if they die?”
“Then they die. Document your work scientifically and you’ll still get an A.” She pulled The Beginner’s Guide to Raising Chickens from her bookshelf and said, “Read the book and set yourself up tonight.”
That night I came home, more worried than ever. I’d read the book. I had to turn the eggs three times a day and regulate the temperature and humidity(湿度). But aside from that, what was there to do?
My father came with a cardboard tube and a flashlight. He taped the two together so that the light beam was forced straight out the tube. “I will show you how to candle the eggs,” he said, then switched off the light and held an egg up to the cardboard tube. “The light lets you see through the shell so you can watch the embryo(胚胎) develop. Look, see the dark spot here?”
“Is that an embryo?”
“That’s it!”
Suddenly it felt real. The eggs were alive! Surely they had to live!
For the next three weeks, I was completely consumed with the growing of chicks. I labeled the eggs A, B, C, D, E and F, but before long they had names, too: Abby, Bonnie, Clyde, Dexter, Eunice and Florence. Every day I weighed them, candled them, turned them. I drew diagrams of various stages of an embryo’s development. I documented the daily changes and weight loss of each egg. On the outside the eggs were boring, but I knew what was happening inside!

On February 21, 2018, Christine Cheers' world fell apart. Someone on the other end of the phone had said the words that bring parents to their knees: “There's been an accident.” Her 32-year-old Navy flight surgeon James was injured in a training mission. At hospital, Christine and her husband David were told that he would never breathe on his own and he would never smile at them again.
It was time for Christine to honor the spirit of her son who had switched his major from commerce engineering to premed (医学预科) because he wanted to help people. It was time to make her every worst day some stranger's best one. She instructed the hospital to begin the organ donation process. Christine Cheers wasn't leaving the hospital until every last one of her son's organs left the building. She and David watched hospital employees carry coolers from the operation room. The last one was his heart. “That was the one I cared about most, Christine says, “With bravery and selflessness, James had such an amazing heart.”Seeing James's heart leave the building, Christine fell into a sadness so deep that climbing out seemed impossible. Her only comfort would be to find out that James's organs had helped people, so she wrote each receiver a letter just to know if they were doing all right.
Mike Cohen, a cyclist, had a heart transplant. James's heart! Two months after the surgery, Mike got a call from the organization that arranged the transplant (移植). They had a letter for him from James's mother. As he read Christine's letter, Mike began to understand just how special his new heart was. Eager to know more about James, Mike googled him. He found they had a lot in common. They were both athletic and practically the same age. Another thing he learned about James: His grave site (墓地) was in Jacksonville—the other side of the country.

A Narrow Escape
A feeling of terror came over ten-year-old Chet Roscow. He had been swimming in the A Narrow Escape
Matawan River by himself. But he had the idea that someone or something was watching him.
And then he saw a large gray fin(鳍)slicing through the water like a knife. What was that? Could it be a shark? That was impossible! Elm Hills was miles and miles from the ocean. How could a shark find its way into this little river?
But now Chet could see it coming toward him.The shark was bigger than Chet himself. The black eyes staring up through the water-killer eyes.
Chet dived toward the shore, pounding through the water and kicking with all his might. His feet touched the bottom. He was running now, looking over his shoulder. The shark was right behind him, its huge jaws wide open and its white teeth shining in its blooded mouth. Those killer eyes stared at Chet. And then, with a flick of its tail, the shark pushed itself backward into the water, and disappeared down the river.
Chet rose to his knees and threw up. When he could stand, he suddenly noticed his fiends,Sid,Monty and Dewey, standing on the dock(码头).Before he could stop them, they had dived into the water.
"Get out of the water!"he screamed."Get out! Get out now!"
He thundered down the path and onto the dock."You have to get out! There's a shark!"
"You hear that,Monty?" Sid said."There's a shark in the river! We'd better get out."
Sid lifted himself up on the dock and took a running leap off the edge of the dock.He jumped into the river with such an enormous splash that Chet got thoroughly wet. Monty and Dewey dived in after him.
"Oh shaaaaaaa-rrrrrrrk!"Sid called through cupped hands."Here, shark! Come and get us!"

One Saturday afternoon, I was watching TV in the living room with my grandpa when a blinding flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening sound, and the pictures on TV disappeared with that sound. Before I realized what had happened, a gray-white shadow rushed in through the open window and flew over my head. Bang! It hit the wall and slid off to the floor. Shaking with fear, I approached it cautiously and saw that it was a pigeon. It looked at me in fear, trying to open its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently powerless.
So I called my grandpa and immediately set out to give it a helping hand. Taking it in my hands, I felt a few drops of warmth on my hands. It was blood! I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside. “Don’t worry. We’ll get it out alive,” Grandpa said to me. Then he got the first-aid kit. With some cotton, we dried the blood, cleaned the wound and then put it under a hairdryer to dry. All went smoothly, for the pigeon had no strength left to resist. There happened to be an empty birdcage at home, so I put it in gently and added a little water and some grains.
For the next few days, the moment I got home from school, I would run to feed the pigeon. And Grandpa helped a lot, tidying up the cage daily. Little by little, its strength returned. One evening, I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjoyed it! One week later, its wound almost healed (痊愈); its feathers grew and it became brave. Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits, it looked up at me, cooing (咕咕地叫) constantly. To my joy, I could also reach into the cage to touch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked (啄) at me. Finally it completely recovered. But every time I was with it, it seemed restless in the cage. To make it happy and pretty, I tied an orange string (线)around its leg.

When I was a child, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of different flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother, reading stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. For weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (叙述者) part to the play, and asked me to change my role. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion.
“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.
“And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”
Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started crying as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

On Friday the 13th of March, my six-year-old son Jack came home with a huge packet of worksheets in his schoolbag. Soon after, I received the email I had feared was coming-Jack’s school would be closed for at least the next two weeks. The COVID-19 quarantine (隔离期) had begun. At least now I would know he was safe at home. I spent the weekend gathering supplies such as pencils, crayons and paper and setting up a classroom on my dining room table.
On the first day of what was referred to as "distance learning", I realized I was being overly optimistic, and I only had one child to teach. He suffers from hearing loss and wears hearing aids. In school, he receives special services from a teacher of the deaf, a speech therapist (治疗专家),an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist. In addition to his major classes, there was also his music class, art class, computer education, the library, and physical education. I was suddenly ten teachers all at the same time, and the work began piling up!
Although my job as a freelance (自由职业的) writer allows me to work according to my own schedule, I would normally work when Jack was at school. Now that time was taken up with school days at home. This meant I was teaching for most of the day and then working as a writer all afternoon into the evening. Many days didn’t stop until bedtime, and then we were right back at it the next morning. This was the new normal and it was stressful. More than once, I found myself feeling angry for no particular reason. On one occasion. I shouted angrily at my printer simply because it wouldn’t work properly.
One day, I was helping Jack with a short journal. As part of his class worksheets, he was required to write and draw about the interesting things that happened at home. I secretly cheered at the opportunity to apply my professional skills to my son’s education.

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there.
The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.
We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

“Surya, you should not take it so lightly. I have an idea. My brother, Ajay, works in a Detective Agency. I will tell him. I am sure he will agree to follow her. Since Priya does not know him, she will not get suspicious.”
Surya kept silent for a while, finally agreed.
On Wednesday, Surya got a call in the office.
“Hello! Surya? This is Ajay?”
“Yes, Ajay. Any news?”
“Plenty. Can you come to Arts College at 4.30 in the evening?”
“Why?”
“I will explain when we meet.”
Sharp at 4.30, Surya parked his scooter in front of the Arts College Building. Ajay was waiting for him. “Come with me, “he said. 10.Thank you, Ma’am
Just an act of kindness changed a boy’s life forever.
She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but a hammer and nails. It had a long strap, and she carried it across her shoulder. It was about eleven o’clock at night, dark and she was walking along, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to seize her purse.
But the boy’s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance. He fell on his back on the sidewalk and his legs flew up. The large woman simply turned around, reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled(发出格格声).
After that the woman said, “Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here.” She still held him tightly. But she bent down enough to permit him to pick up her purse. Then she said, “Now ain’t you ashamed of yourself?”
By that time two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look, and some stood watching.
She did not release him. “Lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“Um-hum! Your face is dirty. Ain’t you got anybody home to tell you to wash your face?”
“No’m” said the boy.
“Then it will get washed this evening,” said the large woman, starting up the street, dragging the frightened boy behind her.
He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen in tennis shoes and blue jeans.
The woman said, “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?”
“No’m,” said the being-dragged boy. “I just want you to turn me loose.”
But the woman continued to drag him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside.

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year, thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.
Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.
We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.
When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.
But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.
We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.
Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines(台词) with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to play the role of the narrator. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my upset, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine(藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds, ” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on, we’ll only have roses in this garden. ’’I immediately argued, “But I like dandelions. “Here you go. Up, up and away,” Chrissy yelled, as she pushed her little brother, Russell, on the swing(秋千). Russell smiled and kicked his feet. “Higher! Higher!” he shouted. “Okay, hang on. Here you go!” Chrissy stood forward and gave the swing an extra hard push. “Help!” Suddenly, Russell screamed.
The swing flew so high that it seemed that it might go flying off into the sky. Russell started to cry just as their mom came running over. “I’m sorry, Russell,” Chrissy said. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I guess I pushed a little too hard.” Their mom was angry with Chrissy and shouted, “Was it a little too hard? That was way too hard, Chrissy! How could you be so irresponsible?” Hearing the word “irresponsible”, Chrissy cried with tears filling her brown eyes.
A week before, her teacher had told her that she was irresponsible for being late for class. And a few days before her dad had used the word “irresponsible” when he blamed her for not hanging up her clothes. “I’m sorry, Mom,” Chrissy said sadly. She turned away and started to walk slowly down the path that wound through the park. That unpleasant word “irresponsible” kept going through Chrissy’s head.
Suddenly, Chrissy saw a little girl walking across the grass, heading up a small hill. Chrissy looked around for the parent, but there was no one else in sight. Chrissy knew there was a running stream on the other side of that hill. “It’s dangerous,” Chrissy thought. She ran as fast as she could towards the little girl. When she reached the girl, she stepped in front her, stopping her from running towards the water.
Chrissy picked up the little girl and carried her towards the playground, looking anxiously for her mother. “Where’s your mommy?” she asked the little girl, although she thought the girl was probably too young to talk. She was surprised when the little girl pointed to a distant house on the other side of the fence.

It was an unusually hot day. Exhausted after football practice, I headed for the bus stop to wait for Bus 112 which would take me home. I was beginning to drift off to sleep when I saw the bus arriving. The sun was in my eyes and that was probably the reason why I got onto Bus 113
I was glad to get a seat. Within minutes, I was sting against the window, fast asleep. When I opened my eyes, it was dark outside. I was the only passenger left on the bus. I could not recognize the part of town we were passing through. I pressed the bell and the bus stopped. I planned to hop across the road and catch a bus going the opposite direction. However, I found myself on a quiet street with a row of shops that were all closed. I kicked myself for not asking the driver for directions.
As I was wondering what to do, a motorcycle came down the road. The rider looked at me as he passed and then stopped a short distance away. I went to him and asked him how to get back to the City Square. He smiled and nodded. He patted the back seat and said that he would send me home. Without a second thought, I climbed up behind the rider. He turned the motorcycle around and headed in the direction I wanted. We travelled for about 15 minutes and the surroundings still looked unfamiliar to me. The rider made a few turns and I knew I was hopelessly lost. I asked him where we were going, He did not answer but increased his speed. Alarm bells started to ring in my head.
I tapped the man, shoulder and told him to stop. He leaned forward and went at high speed now. Then he slowed down to turn into a dark and narrow road that led into an oil palm plantation. I had had enough.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see any rain soon we would lose everything. It was on that day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen in my life.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking in his usual way. He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I went back to making sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that unusual way toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he carried. I followed him secretly as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns(刺) slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck(雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck didn’t threaten him nor even move as Billy knelt down. And then I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from thirst and heat, lift its head with great effort to lap (舔)up the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hands.

In the fall of 2013, I was in fourth grade and my brother Mitch was in second. When many students had puppies, of course we wanted one too!
“Mom, can we get a puppy?” I begged her.
“Well,” she said, “They’re a lot of work, so maybe when you are older.”
“But I’m already ten. I’m old enough to look after a puppy,” I said confidently.
“Yes, we should get a dog!” Echoed Mitch. “Everyone else at school has a puppy,” he exaggerate (夸张). Then mom had to repeat what she had just said: we could get a dog when we were a little bit older. Both Mitch and I were disappointed.
The next day, before getting ready for school, we ran into the kitchen, where mom was preparing breakfast, and packing our lunches for school. In one voice, Mitch and I said, “We are a little bit older. Can we get a dog now?” Mom smiled and said, “We will talk about it tonight with your dad, now go get dressed!” We ran quickly into our room and got ready for school, anxious to get the day over so we could talk about the puppy we were going to get.
That afternoon, as soon as Mitch and I got home from school, we asked mom once more when we could talk about getting a puppy. Mom reminded us, “We’ll talk about it when your dad gets home from work, okay?” “Okay,” we both said and Mitch followed by asking, “When will dad be home?” Mom told us that dad would be home at about 7 o’clock and that we could talk to him after we got our homework done and all ready for supper.
7 o’clock came super slow. And it was not until 7:05 that I heard the key turn and the door open. I jumped up from the chair, and raced to greet dad at the door.
“Dad!” I exclaimed, “Come on, come to the table so we can decide if we can get a puppy!”
“Okay,” dad said as he came into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Then Mitch and I brought out all the reasons we could think of to persuade dad to be on our side. .

A few senior high students were going to Fort Lauderdale with sandwiches and drinks in the paper bags, dreaming of the golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished behind them. As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice a man, who sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He fixed his eyes on the photo in his hands, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.
Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, and everybody got off except the man. He sat rooted in his seat, and the students began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life: perhaps he was a sea captain, a runaway from his wife, an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus, one of the students sat beside him and introduced himself.
“We’re going to Florida,” the student said brightly. “I hear it’s really beautiful.”
“It is,” the man said quietly, as if remembering something he had tried to forget.
“Want some bread?” the student said. He smiled and took a piece. He thanked him and retreated again into his silence. After a while, the man told his story slowly and painfully.
His name was Vingo, he had been in prison in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home. “ When I was in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, if it hurt too much, she could just forget me, I’d understand,”
“Last week, knowing I would be free, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick and there’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she would take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come home with her. If she didn’t accept me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I’d go on through.”
“Wow,” the student exclaimed and gazed at the photo in his hands. All the other students were into it.

18.Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting a new office manager. Many candidates applied for the entry exam, but only one would be accepted in the end. Tim noticed the resumes (简历) of other candidates and was surprised to see that some of them held a Master’s Degree or even a Doctor's Degree .But Tim was only a Bachelor, and barely met the lowest requirement of the diploma. Tim felt a bit frustrated because he had no advantage over other candidates who were excellent students. All the candidates entered the exam hall after handing up their resumes. Tim scanned through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him. Tim tried to calm down and focus on the questions themselves instead of their difficulty level. He started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators (监考人) in the hall , one of them was tall and thin , while the other invigilator was of the opposite: he was short and fat .They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates and were absent. After about 10 minutes, one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left .Some of the candidates took out notes and books, some of them brought tablets to search for answers, and some even called others for help .Tim looked back, and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too. The man winked to Tim, as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour, the invigilators returned to the exam hall. Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test. He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.

There was an elderly lady standing in the bone-chilling cold outside the back of the supermarket. She was holding a basket with bunches of flowers.
“Would you like the flowers, they are $3?” she asked me as I was walking past. I politely responded “No, thank you”, as I walked away and went inside the supermarket.
I was walking around the supermarket searching for the thing that I was needing to buy and thinking of that lady, standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers. Visualizing the beautiful flowers I had admired, her polite quiet voice and lonely figure, I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket. Maybe her family was in urgent need of money; maybe she was a lone soul to earn a living with her own hands....
I had my own personal struggles, I had to budget for everything and I appreciated that $3 was a lot for me, like many of us all and probably for her too. But it wasn’t my first thought when she had asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was I didn’t have the cash but this couldn’t be used as an excuse for not buying those flowers. I had not carried cash with me for a few years and I thought many of us did the same.
When I went to the register to pay with my card I asked for $3 cash out. The staff member questioned me about the $3. I felt anxious about it quickly and tried to remember the money I had in my account. And at the same time she pressed the button to process it. I had mentioned that I wanted to buy flowers from the lady who was selling them outside. Sigh of relief. I was glad to see it all had been accepted by the machine and the staff member handed me the $3.

A brave dog fought off a coyote (丛林狼) twice her size to protect her 10-year-old owner after it attacked them. Owner Lily Kwan, 10, said she had just heard her neighbors in her Toronto, Canada community on Tuesday warning people of a coyote going after children in the area when the animal started biting at her heels while she was walking dog Macy.
In the video captured by a neighbor’s security camera, Lily can be seen running down the sidewalk with her six-year-old rescue dog while the coyote followed them so closely.
“I thought, ‘Am I next, what is going to happen to me?’” Lily told the local newspaper. “I was screaming for help but no one heard me,” said Lily. “I saw this coyote trying to attack my dog and I tried to ring people’s doorbells and knock on people’s doors. Luckily, this one neighbor let me in.”
But while Lucy made it to safety, Macy wouldn’t follow her inside. Instead the little dog turned around toward the coyote. After briefly screaming Macy’s name, Lily ran onto the neighbor’s second floor. Macy could be seen fighting with the coyote, before it caught her and bit her in its mouth and shook her violently. She cried in pain, but kept barking and bit the coyote back until it gave up and ran away finally.
“She’s a super brave dog,” Lily said “I love her so much, and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote.”
Lily’s mother, Dorothy Kwan, said she was not surprised when hearing Macy’s action. “My dog would do anything for our family, so I’m actually not surprised that she did that,” Dorothy Kwan said.

When I got back in my car, I drove off with such a heaviness in my heart for this man. I drove down the road and felt compelled to go back to help this man. When I came back he had finished his meal and was riding away. I pulled up beside him and asked him if there was any way I could help him. He told me not really. I asked him if I could buy him a few meals and put it on a gift card for him.
He broke down crying. He told me he prayed for a hot meal and I came to his help! I was speechless! Come to think of it, that’s not a prayer I’ve ever prayed! I always pray over my food, but I’ve never prayed for a meal... it’s expected! I’ve never doubted that I wouldn’t be able to eat... Tears began to fill my eyes! Oh my... how blessed I am...! It dawned on me that this man had helped me realize just how blessed I am and what I take for granted...
参考范文2
When I got back in my car, I drove off with such a heaviness in my heart for this man. I drove down the road and felt compelled to go back to help this man. When I came back he had just finished his meal. I pulled up beside him and asked him if there was any way I could help him. He told me I had already done a lot for him. As I noticed the sign of the supermarket, it suddenly struck me that I could give him some daily necessities and food as a gift. I got out of my car and took some groceries into a bag from the boot.
He broke down crying. He could say nothing but the repeated “thanks”. I did not expect his reaction like that, but I could understand his uncontrollable emotions. I told him to take care of himself and returned to my car. As I drove off, I saw him from the rear waving his hands with loud “thank you”. I knew that I did something right and I would continue to help anyone in need in the future.

Then one morning I was candling Bonnie when I noticed a gentle peck (啄). Was it coming out? I called my parents and the three of us crowded around, watching Bonnie pip. His little beak cracked through, and while I held my breath and waited, he rested. And rested. Finally its beak poked through again. After what seemed a long time, Bonnie broke out of the shell first. Then came the others. They were wet, weak and ugly at first sight, but soon they became fluffy. It was absolutely amazing.
The day came when I was supposed to hand in my science fair project. I packed up all my chickens, documents and charts and got a ride to school. These beautiful little things caught immediate attention. “You’ve got six alive! The record is three!” Mrs. Brubeck was quite impressed. The whole class stuck around for a whole morning, asking various questions. I shared with them the process as well as the joy of witnessing a new life coming into this world. What an experience! They were not the deep weeping tears of grief, but tears of relief from a mother who knew she’d done right. I rushed over to the birdcage. Just empty! I stared at the remaining water and grains, tears streaming down my cheeks. “Where has it gone? Will it be hurt again? Will it come back? ...” I asked Grandpa, sobbing. “It will fly back!” he convinced me, wiping away my tears gently.
Sure enough, I saw a pigeon flying into the house the next afternoon! It perched near the birdcage, cooing. Despite great excitement, I approached it quietly. It was gray-white and had an orange string tied to one leg. My pigeon came back! “It must be hungry,” Grandpa grinned. Immediately, I fed it with grains and then tiptoed to the window and closed it, urging Grandpa to cage it. But he didn’t. “Pigeons need freedom,” he explained to me patiently. I was hesitant but looking at the pigeon wandering and pecking at the grains peacefully, I realized Grandpa was right! I turned back to the window and opened it.

6.“But you can make a good narrator,” she said with encouragement in her eyes. It reminded me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. Mother enlightened me that the narrator’s part was equally crucial, whose wise words inspired me with courage and confidence. But on the point of the performance, I suddenly felt nervous backstage again, my palms sweaty and kneels soft. Just then, my teacher came over to me, handing me a dandelion from my mother. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down.
After successful performance in the play, I took home the dandelion carefully. Upon arriving home, I made the dandelion it into a dried flower. Witnessing what I was busy doing, my mother watched me fondly and delightedly. With the well preserved dandelion, I participated in various school plays, rehearsed different roles and made spontaneous speeches ever since. Gradually, I’ve become really good at performing and public speaking, seldom feeling nervous onstage now. Every time I see it, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience and the profound wisdom.

I told him all the things I knew about story writing. I sorted out a few magazines with my articles and read to him in a loud and clear voice. I even acted out some of the stories. However, Jack didn’t seem to pay much attention. Turning the crayon over in his hand, he looked at me, then at the blank piece of paper. I remembered how I enjoyed the quiet afternoons typing away on my laptop and thought he might need space to build up his story. I told Jack he could start writing and left him to get on with it.
After half an hour, I found that Jack’s paper was still blank. Stress and impatience burned in my stomach, I knocked heavily on the dining room table and was ready to lecture him on how to be a good student. Instead, Jack raised his head, tears welling up in his eyes. “I’m scared, Mom,” he sobbed. “You are always angry.” I was speechless. Then he started to teach me how to keep my center of gravity in balance. I learned the skills my father taught me, and repeated the practice several times.

11.Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes. The icy wind started howling, cutting my face like a sharp knife. We sat down on the ground in Times Square, took off each other’s shoes, and shoved in some hand-warmers. We ate cheese sticks covered in turkey, jumped up and down, and did pretty much anything we could think of to stay warm. The temperature kept dropping, but our spirits never did, at least not enough to make us actually want to leave. We joked and laughed, waiting for the magic moment.
“Three, two, one. Happy New Year!” we screamed the words as loud as possible. The clock struck midnight! Before we knew it, performers were singing, and we were singing along excitedly. With the crowd cheering in a loud collective voice, we finally understood what it felt like to be present at the celebration in person, in such a state of joy, with tens of thousands of people from all over the world. Lily leaned on my shoulder with happiness on her face. Whatever exhaustion and cold we’d previously felt was forgotten, and we knew we had done something amazing together.

If we ran out of the limited water, we would lose everything, even our lives.” Before Billy could make any explanation, he walked into the house angrily, leaving Billy weeping there.
Instead of scolding him like his father, I decided to help him. I went up and held him in my arms. Wiping off his tears, I promised to help him save the baby deer. I found him a small pot to carry water. Holding the pot firmly, Billy walked toward the woods again. As I watched him disappearing into the woods, tears welled up in my eyes. Then came the miracle. Dorothy said she was shocked by the coyote’s scaring behavior. “I would never guess that a coyote, you know, would come out during the day and especially with someone screaming and shouting at it. However, it still was not afraid,” Dorothy said. “It just kept coming to attack my little girl and our dog, you know, despite all the shouting. It was quite aggressive. I am afraid the other kids might be attacked in the future.”
Macy was taken to the ICU on Tuesday, and returned home on Thursday. She was still covered with wounds and weak. “The amazing support we have received from friends, family, neighbors and strangers is amazing,” Dorothy wrote on a page raising money for the little dog’s bills. “Her fever is gone and she’s got her appetite back. What an absolutely courageous dog! I am so very proud of her. She is a true fighter.” As of Thursday evening, many donors have given money to the Kwan family and their brave pet.
