一、教学设计
【教学目的】
1. Students will master the rules of using proper conjunctions in subject clauses.
2. Students will master 4 typical sentence patterns of subject clauses.
【教学流程】
Step 1 Definition
In this class, we are going to learn the subject clause. First, we need to know what a subject clause is. A subject clause is a clause that functions as a subject.
定义:在主从复合句中,作主语的名词性从句。
e.g. What is needed for the space trip is careful preparation.
主语从句
Can you find the sentences with subject clauses from the reading passage “HOW LIFE BEGAN ON EARTH”? Now,please pause the video for 3 minutes as you read.
From the passage, you may find the following sentences:
①What it was to become was uncertain until between4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago….
②…it was not clear whether the shape would last or not.
③What is even more important is that….
④It was not immediately obvious that water was to be fundamental to the development of life.
⑤What many scientists believe is that….
⑥Why they suddenly disappeared still remains a mystery.
⑦So whether life will continue on the earth for millions of years to come will depend on ….
Please pay attention to the conjunctions used in these sentences.
Step 2 Rules
Next,let’s explore some rules in the use of conjunctions in subject clauses.
Rule1: 如果主语从句中缺少主语、宾语或定语,引导词用what(指物),who/whom(指人),which(指哪一个)。
e.g. What I wanted was a few days’ rest.
Who will go to the energy conference is not important.
Which hotel he is staying at is unknown to us.
Rule2: 如果主语从句中缺少状语,引导词用when(指时间),where(指地点),why(指原因),how(指方式)。
e.g. When he will be back depends on the weather.
Where we live doesn’t matter.
How the man died puzzled us all.
Why he isn’t here today is unknown.
Rule3: 如果主语从句中不缺少成分,引导词用that(无意,不省),whether/if(是否,句首不用if)。
e.g. That they are badly in need of help is quite clear.
Whether they will sell the house is not yet decided.
It doesn’t matter whether/if he will come.
Now it’s your turn to make sentences using these rules.
Step 3 Typical patterns
Sometimes the subject clause is too long. In that case, we may use “it” as the formal subject. The real subject is put at the end of the sentence. There are four typical sentence patterns of subject clause using “it” as formal subject.
it 作形式主语的常用句型:
It+ be +名词(a fact/rule/pity/mystery/surprise/…)+ that 从句
It+ be + 形容词(necessary/important/obvious/…)+ that从句
It + 不及物动词(seem/appear/happen/…)+ that从句
It+ be + 动词的过去分词(said/known/reported/suggested/proved/…)+ that从句
Now let your imagination fly and make some sentences using the sentence patterns. Ok, I will show you some sentences that I have made. Please read them.
e.g. It is important that I go and attend the meeting.
It is no wonder that all the teachers like him.
It is said that he works in a bank.
It happened that he had gone out.
Step 4 Practice
Have you mastered what you have learned today? Now let’s check.
Fill in the blanks with proper conjunctions.
1. Who will be sent to carry out the task hasn’t been settled.
2. It doesn’t matter whether/ if it turns out to be a good idea.
3.What we’ll do is leave a note for Mum to tell her we won’t be back till late.
4. When John will arrive is unknown. Maybe two hours later.
5.It’s possible that he hasn’t received the letter.
