Bill Bowerman was a track coach. He wanted to help athletes run faster. So he had learnt how to make running shoes. He had also started a shoe company with a friend. It was 1971.Running shoes at the time were heavy. They had spikes(鞋钉)on the sole(鞋底). The spikes tore up the track and slowed down runners.
To make a lighter shoe, Bill tried the skins of fish. To make a better sole, he wanted to replace the spikes. Bill dug through his wife Barbara's jewelry box. He hoped to find a piece of jewelry with an interesting pattern. He would then copy the pattern onto the new soles. Nothing worked. Bill was defeated.
Then, one Sunday morning, Barbara made Bill waffles(华夫饼)for breakfast. Bill watched her cook.
He studied the criss-cross pattern on a waffle iron.
Inspiration struck. The pattern on the waffle iron was just what Bill was looking for. The squares were flatter and wider than sharp spikes. The pattern would help the shoes hold any surface without tearing into it.
When Barbara left the house, Bill ran to his lab. He took the liquid chemicals that, when mixed, would harden into the sole of a shoe. He poured the mixture into the waffle iron---and the Waffle Trainer was born.
Bill’s company put the Waffle Trainer on market in 1974.It was a huge hit. Maybe you’ve heard of that company---it’s called Nike. And today it’s worth around $100 billion.
It was the waffle iron that had changed the course of Bill’s life---and helped turn Nike into a well-known name. Today, the waffle iron is kept at Nike headquarters. It serves as a reminder that if we keep trying, we can find a solution to even the most difficult problems. And those solutions can come from unlikely places, even the breakfast table.
24. What shortcomings did the old-style running shoes have?
A. They were hard to wear. B. They were too large.
C. They were impractical. D. They were easy to break.
25. Where did Bill get the inspiration to invent the famous Waffle Trainer?
A. From the skins of the fish. B. From his wife’s jewelry.
C. From the colour of the iron. D. From his wife’s cooking tools.
26. What can we learn from Bill’s success?
A. A cheerful wife is the joy of life.
B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
D. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Waffles and Nike B. Inspiration and Invention
C. A Great Inventor D. A Well-Known Company

In a recent study, pizza was ranked as the food most associated with symptoms of addiction, according to the Yale Food Addiction Tool.
The psychological response to pizza’s ingredient combinations is partially explained by the fact that highly processed foods like potato chips and pizza, with added amounts of fat, carbohydrates and salt, are most associated with behavioral indicators of addiction, such as loss of control over consumption and continued consumption despite negative consequences, according to Erica M. Schulte, a doctor in psychology at the University of Michigan who led the study. The combination of pizza’s ingredients “seem to be especially rewarding and do not occur together in foods found in nature and this may contribute to its association with addictive-like eating behaviors," Schulte explained.
In fact, another recent study found that the combination of fat and carbohydrates seems to raise the reward potential of highly processed foods more than either alone. “There is likely something more rewarding in the combinations of those ingredients that can result in an addictive process in some individuals,” Schulte said.
Perhaps it’s a survival mechanism. “If you were really starving, pizza is a type of food that would be totally enough to stop your hunger. The fat gives you satiety, the sugar is satisfying, and the salt is going to keep you alive,” Civille said.
Herbert Stone, a sensory scientist for 50 years, has worked with some of the nation’s top pizza companies in order to increase pizza’s appeal to consumers. “That combination, when heated, has enormous appeal,” he said. “It’s addictive because there is nothing bad about it. There is nothing not to like.”
28. What might be the cause of pizza addiction according to Schulte?
A. The materials for making pizza. B. The way it is prepared.
C. The pleasant taste and smell. D. The energy it provides.
29 What does “either” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. One of the two studies. B. Carbohydrates or fat.
C. Pizza or potato chips. D. Pizza or other processed foods.
30. Why would pizza companies work with Herbert?
A. To make pizza more nutritious. B. To make their pizza more popular.
C. To study how to prepare pizza. D. To fight against pizza addiction.
31. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A biology textbook. B. A travel brochure.
C. A research paper. D. A health magazine.

A self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in a late-night accident in Tempe, Arizona, police said on Monday. The accident is believed to be the first pedestrian death involving the technology of autonomous vehicles.
The gray SUV had an operator in the driver’s seat and was traveling at about 40 miles per hour in autonomous mode when it struck a woman who was walking across the street late Sunday night, Tempe police said. The pedestrian was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
“The City of Tempe has been supportive of autonomous vehicle testing because of the innovation and promise that the technology may offer in many areas, including transportation options for disabled residents and seniors,” Tempe Mayor, Mitchell said in the statement. “Testing must occur safely. All indications we have had in the past show that traffic laws are being obeyed by the companies testing here. Our city leadership and Tempe police will pursue any and all answers to what happened in order to ensure safety moving forward.”
Self-driving cars have been praised by technology companies as the wave of the future. Autonomous cars are already being in more than 30 cities around the world, with companies investing more than $80 billion into research and development.
“Everyone recognized that someone was going to die in a crash involving an autonomous vehicle eventually,” Bryant Walker Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina who studies risks in automated driving systems, told NBC News. “As good as that technology tries to be, mistakes can happen, or it may be one of the small fraction of crashes. I just think everybody kind of hoped that one wouldn’t come this soon.”
Smith added that because federal and state agencies don’t have the resources to monitor individual vehicles, the responsibility for safety falls on the individual companies running the technology.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced that a four-person team has been sent to Tempe to investigate the crash.
32. Which of the following is true about the accident?
A. The woman was dead on the spot.
B. The accident is under investigation.
C. The driver was arrested for speeding.
D. It is the first accident caused by autonomous vehicles.
33. Why does the City of Tempe support autonomous vehicle testing?
A. The autonomous vehicle can make transportation safer.
B. A large profit will be brought by the autonomous vehicles.
C. The autonomous vehicles will help disabled residents and seniors.
D. Companies invest more than $80 billion into research and development.
34. According to Bryant Walker Smith, who should take the responsibility of the safety of individual self-driving vehicles?
A. The driver. B. The pedestrian.
C. The individual companies. D. The federal and state agency.
35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Tempe is in favor of autonomous vehicle testing.
B. Autonomous vehicles have a lot of disadvantages.
C. Companies should take action to improve self-driving cars.
D. A self-driving Uber car caused a pedestrian’s death in Arizona.

Critical (批判的) thinking is the art of using reason to analyze ideas and dig deeper to get to our true potential. It doesn’t mean you’re thinking harder or longer. ____36____ Here are some tips and ideas to help you build a foundation for critical thinking.
Question your assumptions. We make a lot of assumptions about almost everything. It’s how our brain processes certain pieces of information and how we get along in everyday life. You could say they are the foundation of our critical framework. ____37____ Then the whole foundation needs to be rebuilt, from the bottom up.
Don’t take information on authority until you've investigated it yourself. Instead of double-checking everything anyone says, we tend to label information as either coming from a trustworthy or not trustworthy source. This keeps us from double-checking every piece of information that comes our way, saving time and energy. But it also keeps us from getting to the bottom of things we think of as coming from a trustworthy source, even when they don’t. ___38___
Put yourself in other people’s shoes. Empathy can also help you develop your critical thinking skills. ____39____ You may find that a little understanding facilitates a deeper insight into other people and their behavior. The deeper your insight into yourself and others, the wiser your decisions will be.
___40___ There is no way to learn better than learning from your friends. If you only want to be a big fish swimming in the little pond just because your ego (自负) feels good, keep this part. If you are wondering about how to develop critical skills, make friends with smart people and throw away your ego.
A. Actually, it’s about thinking better.
B. Surround yourself with people smarter than you.
C. Be someone that people know that they can count on.
D. You should not judge others until you fully understand their situation.
E. But what if they turned out to be wrong, or at least not entirely truthful?
F. The reason is that understanding does not always go with the right action.
G. So what is published in a magazine or online doesn’t mean it’s necessarily true.
